And just when you think that everything's going very very bad for our hero, the author pulls off a deus ex machina I'm always skeptical of this plot device, but it seemed to work in this case —I had to stop myself from doing three cartwheels on the train. Dec 31, Sumant rated it it was amazing Shelves: fantasy , saxon-stories. Usually after a few books in a row from an author I'll start to get a burned out feeling that forces me to pick someone else up until I feel refreshed enough to come back, but that's not the case so far. This was quite a rough story in terms of trust, faith, and betrayal. Of all his protagonists, however, none is as beloved as Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Odin, Thor and Jehovah. I'm still fascinated by Uthred. The shadows were long and the smoke of the city's cooking fires was purple and gold in the twilight. Back to top. Shockingly, third book in a series, still great. He is a Dane that has become a Christian and claims to be a King. Fate is fate. Bernard Cornwell brought 9th century England alive for me. It is fate that has determined his encounter with a Dane slave prophesied by a Christian monk to be Northumbria's king one day. I just finished another epic adventure thanks to Lords of the North, the 3rd book in the Saxon Stories series by Bernard Cornwell. These were Sharpe's Eagle and Sharpe's Gold , both published in But, his enemy is Uhtred son of Uhtred, the rightful lord of Bebbanburg. The best part with Cornwell is that I don't put down the book having been only entertained and not educated; my knowledge of this part of the dark ages has seriously increased since I got into this series. Still, he has matched such men before. Other Editions We also got more Ragnar yay but I still miss and grieve view spoiler [Leofric hide spoiler ]. I was actually doing something for my job, looking for interesting exciting video materials to make my lessons about medieval history less plain. The action was non-stop, you were afraid to keep reading and you were afraid to stop. The man who had demanded my name stepped a pace backward. This happens in the exact middle part of the book How did Mr. Book two was all about finding your place and figuring out where you need and want to be. Uhtred, the dispossessed son of a Northumbrian lord, has helped the Saxons of Wessex defeat the invading Danes. Rebellion, chaos, fear, and betrayal await them in the north, forcing Uhtred to turn once more, reluctantly, to the liege he formerly served in battle and blood: Alfred the Great. I have been listening to the audio books, this may not be the wisest move depending on the price of gas in your area. Still one of my favorites of the series - particularly for the very satisfying end. Book one was heartbreaking and full of discovery. Uhtred comes to love Ragnar and is schooled in the arts of the Warrior, eventually himself becoming one. The two have a blood feud that must be satisfied with cold, sharp, steel. Cornwell, Bernard. Bernard Cornwell. Lords of the North (The Last Kingdom Series, Book 3) Writer He is a Dane that has become a Christian and claims to be a King. Full of brutality, slavery, violence, that I'm sure won't be in the tv series. This book picks up right after Uhtred helps Wessex defeat the Danes. The only thing that might've surprised you is that I didn't say "bastard" instead. He does a wonderful job that keeps me wanting more. Bernard Cornwell brought 9th century England alive for me. Uhtred lost his family when he was a boy and was adopted by a Danish Viking warrior, Earl Ragnar, who he loved as a father, and from whom he learned of the pagan deities, especially the spinners, the three mythical creatures that weave the fate of every man; hence his repeated statement through the entire series, "Fate is inexorable". The objects examined include one such handscroll painting, several illustrated books from the Sakamaki-Hawley Collection, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Library, and Hokusai Ryūkyū Hakkei, an 1832 series of eight landscape prints depicting sites in Okinawa. Drawing upon previous scholarship on the role of popular publishing in forming conceptions of “Japan” or of “national identity” at this time, a media discourse approach is employed to argue that such publications can serve as reliable indicators of understandings

systems Article COVID-19 Case Rates in the UK: Modelling Uncertainties as Lockdown Lifts Claire Brereton 1,* and Matteo Pedercini 2 1 Child Health Research Centre, University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD 4101, Australia 2 Millennium Institute, 2200 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20037, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +61-419-901-107 Abstract: Background: The UK was one of the countries worst affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe. A strict lockdown from early 2021 combined with an aggressive vaccination programme enabled a gradual easing of lockdown measures to be introduced whilst both deaths and reported case numbers reduced to less than 3% of their peak. The emergence of the Delta variant in April 2021 has reversed this trend, and the UK is once again experiencing surging cases, albeit with reduced average severity due to the success of the vaccination rollout. This study presents the results of a modelling exercise which simulates the progression of the pandemic in the UK through projection of daily case numbers as lockdown lifts. Methods: A simulation model based on the Susceptible-Exposed- Infected-Recovered structure was built. A timeline of UK lockdown measures was used to simulate the changing restrictions. The model was tailored for the UK, with some values set based on research and others obtained through calibration against 16 months of historical data. Results: The model projects that if lockdown restrictions are lifted in July 2021, UK COVID-19 cases will peak at hundreds of thousands daily in most viable scenarios, reducing in late 2021 as immunity acquired through both vaccination and infection reduces the susceptible population percentage.

  • Alternate History
Alternate History "What if?" What if Germany and Japan had won World War II instead of the Allied Forces? What if the South had won the Civil War, instead of the North? What would history have been like and, perhaps more importantly, what would our world be like today? These are the kinds of questions that works of Alternate History address and that have intrigued such masters of speculative fiction as Isaac Asimov, Ben Bova, Philip K. Dick, Harry Turtledove, and a host of others. Sometimes complex but always imagination teasing, the titles in this category have intrinsic appeal not only to science fiction readers but also to fans of fantasy and historical fiction. -- Michael Cart, Contributing Editor, Young Adult Fiction. Alternate history would change our world but what if alternate worlds already exist on some dimension parallel to our own? This is another theme similar to alternate history which uses an explainable, non-magical means of moving from one world to another. Worlds that may have been similar to ours in their distant history are included. Some tales are set so far in the future that the setting is more like alternate worlds than the worlds in hard science fiction. Exploring “what if” can lead you to almost anywhere or any time! In general, studying is their primary aim but some have additional reasons such as personal development through exposure to another culture. As a result of the homogeneity of Japanese society, Japanese people are not necessarily used to other cultures especially if they have only lived within Japan. Due to the vast differences between Japanese and British cultures, many students have difficulties in adapting to British society (Nippoda, 2011). This article presents some culturally specific factors that affect students' adaptation based on research (Nippoda, 1993). It focuses on four main points arising from clinical work: the language barrier, differences in communication styles and educational systems, the individual's motivation and external pressure, and the effects of students' insecure status in the host country. • The Angel of Ferrara
The Angel of Ferrara Benjamin Woolley Goldsmith’s College, University of London Submitted for the degree of PhD I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own Benjamin Woolley Date: 1st October, 2014 Abstract This thesis comprises two parts: an extract of The Angel of Ferrara, a historical novel, and a critical component entitled What is history doing in Fiction? The novel is set in Ferrara in February, 1579, an Italian city at the height of its powers but deep in debt. Amid the aristocratic pomp and popular festivities surrounding the duke’s wedding to his third wife, the secret child of the city’s most celebrated singer goes missing. A street-smart debt collector and lovelorn bureaucrat are drawn into her increasingly desperate attempts to find her son, their efforts uncovering the brutal instruments of ostentation and domination that gave rise to what we now know as the Renaissance. In the critical component, I draw on the experience of writing The Angel of Ferrara and nonfiction works to explore the relationship between history and fiction. Beginning with a survey of the development of historical fiction since the inception of the genre’s modern form with the Walter Scott’s Waverley, I analyse the various paratextual interventions—prefaces, authors’ notes, acknowledgements—authors have used to explore and explain the use of factual research in their works. I draw on this to reflect in more detail at how research shaped the writing of the Angel of Ferrara and other recent historical novels, in particular Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall.
