He incorporated twentieth-century harmonies into traditional forms and into classical piano writing. This paper seeks to emphasize the advantages of his music for piano pedagogy. Chapter Two concentrates on the composer’s life, compositional style, contribution and rewards, and it includes a short list of piano compositions. Chapter Three examines and analyzes four selected pieces by Persichetti: Little Piano Book, Piano Sonata No. 9, Poems for Piano No. 2 “Soft is the Collied Night,” and Four Arabesques, Op. 141, No. 1 Affabile. The Poem, the Arabesque, and the miniatures in Little Piano Book are smaller pieces, intended for amateur and intermediate pianists. The Ninth Sonata is a more substantial composition for advanced pianists. These pieces provide a broad image of Persichetti’s piano compositions. This study of selected works by Persichetti shows that his music is excellent pedagogical material for piano students as well as outstanding music to be performed in the concert hall. -

2015/16 Season: Constellations Persichetti @ 100 and Music from the Generation He Inspired 31ST SEASON 17 & 18 October, 2015 Curtis Institute of Music Philadelphia, PA Introduction: Vincent Persichetti @ 100 Vincent Persichetti was one of the most widely respected musicians of his generation. A prolific composer, brilliant educator and lecturer, and prodigious pianist, he composed more than 150 works in virtu- ally all genres and for virtually all performing media, while serving for 40 years on the faculty of the Juilliard School, many of them as chairman of the composition department. During his lifetime Persichetti influenced the musical lives of thou- sands of people from all walks of life, and his name came to signify a comprehensive musicianship virtually unparalleled among American composers. Countless young pianists were nurtured on his sonatinas and the Little Piano Book, while many other young instrumental students first experienced serious contemporary music through his works for band; church choirs turned to his Hymns and Respons- es for the Church Year as an inexhaustible resource, while many young composers have found his classic textbook Twentieth Century Harmony to be an indispensable tool; among professional soloists and conductors his sonatas, concertos, and symphonies stood among the masterworks of American music. Throughout his life Persichetti encouraged healthy, creative participation in music at all levels of proficiency, while shunning dogmas that advocated one composition- al approach at the expense of others. He was beloved and admired as a teacher, and was in great demand as a lecturer, using his comprehensive knowledge of the repertoire, extraordinary gift for improvisation, awe-inspiring piano technique, and mischievous wit to captivate audiences. -

He began piano lessons at the age of seven and continued with the study of harmony, counterpoint, analysis and composition as a teenager with Françoise Gangloff-Levéchin, Christian Manen and Louis Saguer. He then entered the Paris Conservatory where he studied with a number of composers including Claude Ballif, Marius Constant, Serge Nigg, and Michel Philippot. 100 Years of Extraordinary Historical Highlights from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Archives 1910s 1915 – Through a $6,000 grant from the city of Baltimore, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is founded as a branch of the city’s Department of Municipal Music, making it the only major American orchestra to be fully funded as a municipal agency. 1916 – On February 11, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs its inaugural concerts to a standing- room-only crowd at The Lyric, under the direction of Music Director Gustav Strube. All three concerts comprising the first season at the Lyric are sold out. 1920s 1924 – On February 16, the BSO hosts its first children’s concert. The Baltimore Symphony youth concert series is the first to be established by an American orchestra. 1926 – The Baltimore Symphony makes its initial broadcast performance on WBAL Radio. 1930s 1930 - George Siemonn becomes the second music director of the orchestra. He conducts his opening concert, with the musicians now numbering 83, on November 23. 1935 - In late February, George Siemonn reluctantly resigns as music director and is replaced by Ernest Schelling. Forty-four musicians apply for the position. Schelling is well-known for his children’s concert series at Carnegie Hall. 1937 - Sara Feldman and Vivienne Cohn become the first women to join the Baltimore Symphony. The older members of the orchestra are supportive, but union members picket the hall with signs saying, “Unfair to Men,” which is reported in the New York Times. 1937 - Ernest Schelling becomes ill and is replaced by Werner Janssen. The dynamic young conductor and his wife, the celebrated film star Ann Harding, receive an enthusiastic response when they arrive in Baltimore. -

These performers sought out and collaborated directly with composers, helping to produce works that sensibly and musically used the tuba and euphonium. However, not every composer who wishes to write for the tuba and euphonium has access to world-class tubists and euphonists, and the body of available literature concerning the capabilities of the tuba family is both small in number and lacking in comprehensiveness. This document seeks to remedy this situation by producing a comprehensive and accessible guide on the capabilities of the tuba family. An analysis of the currently-available materials concerning the tuba family will give direction on the structure and content of this new guide, as will the dissemination of a survey to the North American composition community. The end result, the Composer’s Guide to the Tuba, is a practical, accessible, and composer-centric guide to the modern capabilities of the tuba family of instruments. iv To Sara and Dad, who both kept me going with their never-ending love. -

Characterization and' Taxonomy of Historic Brass Musical Instruments from ae Acoustical Standpoint Arnold Myers Ph.D. The University of Edinburgh 1998 I" V *\- Abstract The conceptual bases of existing classification schemes for brasswind are examined. The requirements of a taxonomy relating to the character of brass musical instruments as experienced by players and listeners are discussed. Various directly and indirectly measurable physical parameters are defined. The utility of these parameters in classification is assessed in a number of case studies on instruments in museums and collections. The evolution of instrument design since 1750 in terms of these characterization criteria is outlined.
