This process aims to achieve the Good Environmental Status (GES) through the elaborated 11 Ecological Objectives and their respective common indicators. Since 2008, Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention have adopted the EcAp and agreed on a roadmap for its implementation. First phases of the EcAp process led to the accomplishment of 5 steps of the scheduled 7-steps process such as: 1) Definition of an Ecological Vision for the Mediterranean; 2) Setting common Mediterranean strategic goals; 3) Identification of an important ecosystem properties and assessment of ecological status and pressures; 4) Development of a set of ecological objectives corresponding to the Vision and strategic goals; and 5) Derivation of operational objectives with indicators and target levels. -

Three gastrocotylid genera share similar morphology and anatomy but are distinguished by this character: Pseudaxine Parona & Perugia, 1890 has no vagina, Allogastrocotyle Nasir & Fuentes Zambrano, 1983 has two vaginae, and Pseudaxinoides Lebedev, 1968 has multiple vaginae. In the course of a study of Pseudaxine trachuri Parona & Perugia 1890, we found specimens with structures resembling “multiple vaginae”; we compared them with specimens without vaginae in terms of both morphology and molecular characterisitics (COI barcode), and found that they belonged to the same species. -

A faster rate of reproductive gain with body size can occur if larger males are more effective in controlling females and excluding competitors from fertilizations. The most simple consequence of this theoretical scenario, based on sexual allocation theory, is that natural breeding sex ratios are expected to be female biased in female-first sex changers, because average male fecundity will exceed that of females. A second prediction is that the intensity of sperm competition is expected to be lower in female-first sex-changing species because larger males should be able to more completely monopolize females and therefore reduce male–male competition during spawning. -

Six iso-caloric (20 kJ/g diet) diets with increasing protein levels (30, 37, 40, 47, 50, and 57%) were formulated. Each test diet was randomly fed to triplicate groups of 13 juvenile fish (initial mean weight 19.28±0.13 g) to satiety over 90 days. Growth performance and feed utilization were best with low dietary protein levels of 30 and 37%, but decreased with diets containing protein levels over 40%. Ammonia nitrogen excretion showed an increasing trend as dietary protein levels gradually increased, whereas retention rates of ammonia nitrogen per intake were highest in the low protein groups of 30 or 37%. -

The analysis is based on 676 specimens caught by seine net from December 2011 to November 2012. Total length of females ranged from 13.3 to 29.3 cm and males from 15.1 to 26.3 cm. The overall sex ratio of females to males was 1:0.85 (χ2=4.314; P < 0.05) with a slightly higher number of females in the largest size class. Length-weight relationship for the total population indicated negative allometric growth (b=2.911). Values of the condition factor are relatively low for both sexes. Maximum values were recorded in September 1.025 for females and 1.029 for males. Gonadosomatic index and histological examination showed that the spawning season of the bogue in the Adriatic is from January to May with peak in February. Six stages of gonad development were identified: immature, undergoing maturation, ripening, ripe, spawning and spent. The monthly distribution of the different sexual maturity stages and the frequency distribution of oocyte diameter revealed that this species is a batch spawner. Over the past few years, however, several surveys made it possible to start an inventory of the coastal fishes for the archipelago. These are mainly based on specimens that where captured or observed whilst diving and also on fishes landed on beaches by local artisanal fishermen.
