SB 58/2013 11 June 2013 Rail Station Usage in Wales 2011-12 This Statistical Bulletin reports on the usage of rail stations in Wales. Information covers each station in Wales for the past three financial years, from 2009-10 to 2011-12, and for Wales and the UK as a whole back to 2004-05. The bulletin is based on the annual station usage report that is published by the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR). As part of this report the ORR publish a spreadsheet which lists the estimated station entries and station exits for each station on the UK rail network. Key results The total number of station entries/exits in Welsh stations has risen every year since 2004-05. Cardiff Central remains the busiest station in Wales with around one quarter of all station entries/exits. Rail station usage in Wales accounts for around 2 per cent of the UK total. Sewta is the regional transport consortia for South East Wales comprising the 10 local authorities of Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Torfaen and the Vale of Glamorgan, representing the interests of nearly 1.5million people. Our partners include Network Rail, Passenger Focus, Arriva Trains Wales and First Great Western and with the Welsh Government we are working to improve regional transport in south-east Wales. We see rail as key to the movement of people and goods, and set out specific objectives for rail in our 2010 Regional Transport Plan and 2011 Rail Strategy (updated in 2013 to take account of the proposed Valley Lines electrification). Our response will draw from both documents and our experience delivering a range of rail schemes across the region. We have geared our comments to reflect the nine items in the terms of reference -

Map, double-back and fare route easements are always positive. Circuitous route easements are always negative. Other kinds of easements can be positive or negative. A journey which follows a route otherwise permitted by the Routeing Guide may be forbidden by a negative easement. This easement applies in both directions. Journeys from stations on the Barton-on-Humber line to Habrough and stations west of 000005 Local Habrough may double back between Habrough and Grimsby. This easement applies in both directions. Journeys from Hykeham to and via Newark Northgate or Newark Castle may double 000008 Local back from Lincoln. This easement applies in both directions. Journeys from Surbiton and stations west of Surbiton to Kingston upon Thames and 000012 Doubleback stations north of Kingston Upon Thames, may double back between Wimbledon, Raynes Park and New Malden. This easement applies in both directions. Journeys from Lydney, Chepstow and Caldicot to Swindon, Didcot, Reading and beyond 000013 Routeing Point may go via Newport. Landscape and Visual Executive Summary 5.1 The landscape and visual impact assessment considers the effects of the Proposed Development on landscape character and visual amenity within a study area up to 15 km from the site. The assessment has been undertaken in accordance with all relevant published guidance on the topic, and has involved desk-based and field- based assessments. The approach and scope of the assessment was agreed through scoping and through consultation with local planning authorities. 5.2 The baseline for the assessment includes landscape and visual receptors. The landscape of the site and study area is described through observations made in the field, and drawing on published landscape character assessments and the LANDMAP database. Visual receptors include people in settlements, using the local area for recreation, and travelling through the area on roads. Representative viewpoints have been selected to assess the range of visual receptors, and these viewpoints were agreed through consultation. 5.3 The assessment of effects considers the embedded mitigation achieved through the design process, as set out in Chapter 2 Design Evolution. 5.4 Localised significant landscape effects are predicted during the construction stage, affecting the site itself and the local area of the Mynydd Llangeinwyr Uplands LCA. Due to local topography, construction works will not be widely visible from adjacent valley landscapes. 5.5 During operation, the introduction of seven large turbines alongside access tracks, substation, control building and the Energy Storage Facility (ESF), will give rise to a major (significant) effect on the landscape of the site and the surrounding Mynydd Llangeinwyr Uplands LCA. -
