ABSTRACT African American cultural and social history has neglected to interrogate fully a crucial facet of African American political, economic, and social life: African American Freemasonry. “ The Freemasonry of the Race The Cultural Politics of Ritual, Race, and Place in Postemancipation Virginia seeks to remedy this neglect by developing an in-depth and critical treatment of this fraternal order. This project broadly situates African American Freemasonry in the complex and evolving relations of power, peoples, and polities of the Atlantic world. The study develops an interpretative framework that not only recognizes the organizational and institutional aspects of African American Freemasonry, but also interprets it as a discursive space in and through which articulations of race, class, gender, and place are theorized and performed. These public and private performances - often encoded inarchaic symbols and languages - mark the cultural divides and socio-political conflicts that litter the landscape of United States social and civic life. “The Freemasonry o f the Race ” presents a critical cartography of African American Freemasons’ responses to the social and political exigencies of the postemancipation period. Through the lens of African American Freemasonry, this project presents a textured reading of the social, cultural, and political situation of African Americans in the postemancipation period. The study connects the developments of African American Freemasonry in the Atlantic world with the every day culture of African American Freemasonry in Charlottesville, Virginia from the conclusion of the Civil War until the turn of the century. Utilizing African American Freemasonry as a critical optic, the major question this study attempts to respond to is: How can we historicize and (re)present African American Freemasonry in order to rethink the cultural and political space of the postemancipation period in the United States? This project is also concerned with the issue of how to conceptualize a postemancipation South as a moment of intersection of different historical temporalities each embedded with various cultural, social, political, and economic projects. Borrowing and blending a number of methodologies from social history, literary theory, and cultural studies, “ The Freemasonry of the Race The Cultural Politics of Ritual, Race, and Place in Postemancipation Virginia presents a set of analytic essays on African American Freemasonry, each intimately concerned with deciphering some of the principles that organized and (re)constructed various regimes of power and normality along the fault lines of race, sex, gender, class, and place. By thinking and working through African American Freemasonry in such a manner, this project seeks to open up new interdisciplinary horizons in African American cultural and social history. vi Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.     Prince Hall , The history Prince Hall, our founder, was one of our great Americans, a worthy Grand Master associated with our first Grand Lodge and its expansion. His name is carried by our masonic organizations in the United States, and by thousands of freemasons who regard themselves as descendants from the Grand Lodge of England, from which he received his authority more than two centuries ago. We in America celebrated in 1976 the two hundredth anniversary of our Declaration of Independence. This is also the two hundred and first (201st) anniversary of the founding of Prince Hall Masonry. It is a monument to Prince Hall’s life, career and leadership. It was a significant event in Freemasonry on March 6, 1775, when Prince Hall and fourteen other men were initiated into Freemasonry through Warrant No. 459, which is still in our possession. John Batt, who was of the 38th Foot Regiment of the British Army, having enlisted in 1759 and learning of the American cause, re-enlisted in its army. The enlistees were Prince Hall, Cyrus Johnston, Bueston Slinger, Prince Rees, John Canton, Peter Freeman, Benjamin Tiler, Duff Ruform, Thomas Santerson, Prince Rayden, Cato Speain, Boston Smith, Peter Best, Forten Horward, and Richard Titley. The writer has this record. A permit was issued for these freemasons to meet as African Lodge No. 1, and they became the first Black freemasons in the United States. Prince Hall enlisted and served as a soldier in the 2nd and 6th Regiments of Massachusetts. In this connection, George W. Williams, historian, wrote in 1884, "that he saw hard service we know by the record of the two regiments he served in, always distinguished for steadiness and valor.

    Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Ariel Mae Lambe All rights reserved ABSTRACT Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe This dissertation shows that during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) diverse Cubans organized to support the Spanish Second Republic, overcoming differences to coalesce around a movement they defined as antifascism. Hundreds of Cuban volunteers—more than from any other Latin American country—traveled to Spain to fight for the Republic in both the International Brigades and the regular Republican forces, to provide medical care, and to serve in other support roles; children, women, and men back home worked together to raise substantial monetary and material aid for Spanish children during the war; and longstanding groups on the island including black associations, Freemasons, anarchists, and the Communist Party leveraged organizational and publishing resources to raise awareness, garner support, fund, and otherwise assist the cause. The dissertation studies Cuban antifascist individuals, campaigns, organizations, and networks operating transnationally to help the Spanish Republic, contextualizing these efforts in Cuba’s internal struggles of the 1930s. It argues that both transnational solidarity and domestic concerns defined Cuban antifascism. First, Cubans confronting crises of democracy at home and in Spain believed fascism threatened them directly. Citing examples in Ethiopia, China, Europe, and Latin America, Cuban antifascists—like many others—feared a worldwide menace posed by fascism’s spread.

    THE HISTORY OF FREEMASONRY No one knows with certainty how or when the Masonic Fraternity was formed. A widely accepted theory among Masonic scholars is that it arose from the stonemasons’ guilds during the Middle Ages. The language and symbols used in the fraternity’s rituals come from this era. The oldest document that makes reference to Masons is the Regius Poem, printed about 1390, which was a copy of an earlier work. In 1717, four lodges in London formed the first Grand Lodge of England, and records from that point on are more complete. Within thirty years, the fraternity had spread throughout Europe and the American Colonies. Freemasonry became very popular in colonial America. George Washington was a Mason, Benjamin Franklin served as the head of the fraternity in Pennsylvania, as did Paul Revere and Joseph Warren in Massachusetts. Other well-known Masons involved with the founding of America included John Hancock, John Sullivan, Lafayette, Baron Fredrick von Stuben, Nathanael Greene, and John Paul Jones. Another Mason, Chief Justice John Marshall, shaped the Supreme Court into its present form. Over the centuries, Freemasonry has developed into a worldwide fraternity emphasizing personal study, self-improvement, and social betterment via individual involvement and philanthropy. During the late 1700s it was one of the organizations most responsible for spreading the ideals of the Enlightenment: the dignity of man and the liberty of the individual, the right of all persons to worship as they choose, the formation of democratic governments, and the importance of public education. Masons supported the first public schools in both Europe and America.

Grand Secretary 4115 NINE MILE ROAD RICHMOND, VIRGINIA 23223-4926 Dear Interested Individual: Shown on the next two pages is our “Petition for the Degrees,” which is to be completed in its entirety by a man interested in membership, who is at least eighteen (18) years of age, a resident of Virginia for the past twelve months, and who has had two Masons in good standing sign his petition. Along with the two-page petition is a “Disclosure and Authorization For Consumer Reports” form that gives the Grand Lodge of Virginia the right to perform a background check on you. Upon their completion, the petition and authorization form will need to be submitted to a local Lodge, along with the Lodge’s required fees for a petition and background check. When printing out the petition, please print it on two sides, if at all possible. Please note that documents with sensitive personally identifiable information such as Social Security numbers and birth date must be stored securely, electronic versions shall be password protected, and must be encrypted when electronically (e-mailed) transmitted. The usual process that follows is that your petition for degrees will be presented to the Lodge at its next meeting. The background check will be done and the final report is sent to you.     Skyler Osburn “Lynch and Non-Lynch: A Cinematic Engagement with Process Philosophies East and West” English and Philosophy – Oklahoma State University Honors Thesis 1 Introduction I have envisioned what follows as, primarily, a work of comparative philosophy. My understanding of the sense of ‘philosophy’ extends beyond the accepted foundational works of logic, epistemology, and metaphysics, to include psychoanalytical frameworks, as well as aesthetic theories and their aesthetic objects. Whether thinking it or living it, and regardless of its particular effects, philosophy is a fundamentally creative endeavor, so artistic processes especially have a natural place alongside any mode of analytical reasoning. Given these premises, readers of this essay should not expect to find any thorough arguments as to why a given filmmaker might need to be approached philosophically. This project simply accepts that the filmmaker at hand does philosophy, and it intends to characterize said philosophy by explicating complementary figures and paradigms and then reading particular films accordingly. Furthermore, given the comparative nature of the overall project, it might be best to make an attempt at disposing of our presuppositions regarding the primacy of the argumentative as such. In what follows, there are certainly critical moments and movements; for instance, the essay’s very first section attempts to (briefly and incompletely) deconstruct Sartre’s dualistic ontology. Nevertheless, these negative interventions are incidental to a project which is meant to be primarily positive and serve as a speculatively affirmative account of David Lynch’s film- philosophical explorations. The essay that follows is split unevenly into two chapters or divisions, but the fundamental worldview developed throughout its course necessitates the equally fundamental interdependence of their specific conceptualizations.
