ThisissuefeaturesthenewsetofofficersoftheGrandLodgeofHawaii;Iwould liketotakethisopportunitytocongratulateMWDennisIngonhisascensionto thegrandorientalchair.Thesamefelicitationsgototheotherofficersofthe GrandLodge.IwishallofthemwellastheytakeonthemantleofGrandLodge leadership.ItisofinteresttonotethatamajorityoftheGrandLodgeofficersare membersofHawaiianLodge,showingonceagaintheprimaryandimportantrole thatHawaiianLodgeplaysinHawaiiMasonry.Inaddition,itisquiteremarkable thatallmembersoftheCableTowCommitteeareeitherofficersorcommittee chairoftheGrandLodgeofHawaii. Thethemeforthisissueis“FreemasonryandtheCommunity.”Weselectedthis theme,notonlybecauseitjiveswellwithoneofthemainthrustsofthenewGrand Master,butalsobecausewebelievethatFreemasonryisrootedandhasavery importantroletoplayinthecommunity.Afterall,Freemasonryaimsatdevelop ing“goodmenandtrue”whowillbecomethelivingstonesthatmakeuptheedi ficethatwecallsociety.ThereisalsoaneedforFreemasonstobeinvolvedin societynotonlybecausethefraternity’sgrowthandmembershipdependsonhow itisseenbythecommunitybutalsobecauseitstenetsofbrotherlyloveandrelief dictateustoembraceandbeinthecommunity.Inthisissue,weareprintingthe speechbytheGrandOratorwhoexhortstheMasoniclodgesinHawaiitobemore activeinthecommunity.Alsoincludedisanarticlewhichtalksabouttheneedfor thefraternitytobeinthecommunity,anotherwhichadvancestheideathatfrater nalgroupsgrewoutoftheseedofFreemasonry,andanotherthattalksaboutour senseofcommunity. Wealsoincludedotherarticlesthatareofgeneralinterestbutnonethelessdeal withimportantissuesandlessonsinFreemasonry.Lodgematters,aswellaspic turesofvariouslodgeactivitiesarealsofoundwithin.ApageonMasonichumor isincludedwhich,wehope,willprovideuswithsomelightheartedmoments. Iwishtothankthemembersofthecommitteefortheircontinuedsupportandfor theirtirelesseffortsinputtingtogetherthispublication.Iwishtogivespecial thankstoBro.RaymundLiongsonofLeewardLodgewho,onaccountofthesab baticalofourlayoutartist,WBDalePalileo,tookonthedifficultjobofpreparing thelayoutforthisissue.Weexpecttoseehimbecomeafullfledgedmemberof theCableTowcommitteesoon. MyfirstsixmonthsastheMasterofourLodgehavegonebyswiftly.I amsofortunatetoworkwithsuchprofessionalandsincereBrethren,andIam especiallygratefulfortheeffortsandenthusiasmofmyofficers.Yet,wewillnot restandmustfulfillallneededtaskstokeepourLodgerejuvenated. Needlesstosay,ourconferringofdegreeshasbeenrelentless,andwe continuetoembracethepassionforourritual,withtheassistanceofourcoaches, WBWilsonCamaganandMWDennisIng.Ilookforwardtoexpandingourpro jectsinanewdirection,aswesupportthevisionoftheGrandLodgeforall Lodgestoworkcloselytogether,andthatweincreaseourinvolvementinthecom munity. OurLodgehadbeengenerouslyawardingcollegescholarshipseachyear, butourexposuretothepublichasbeenrelativelyminimal.Participatinginpa radesisastepintherightdirection,butsometimesitlookslikewehavemarched unnoticedinthelocalmedia. LetusencouragealltheLodgestoworkasoneinshowingthegoodness ofMasonrytothecommunity.OneoftheprojectsIthinkworkswellinthisre gardisthe“AdoptaSchool”program.Thiswouldinvolveworkingwithone schoolthroughouttheyear,assistingstudentsorimprovingtheirfacilitiesona continuingbasis.However,thiscanonlybepossibleifweallgenerouslysupport themissionandworkharmoniouslytogetheronthisendeavor.Ourcommitmentto Masonryandoursupportofthecommunity,withbothourphilanthropyandour time,willbesurelygratifyingintheend.Ilookforwardtoyourunwaveringsup port. Finally,Ileaveyouwiththisthought:Humilityorhumblenessisthe qualityofbeingcourteousandrespectfulofothers.Itistheoppositeofaggressive ness,arrogance,boastfulness,andvanity.Ratherthan"Mefirst,"humilityallows ustosay,"No, you first,myfriend.Humilityisthequalitythatletsusgomore thanhalfwaytomeettheneedsanddemandsofothers.

III hopeeveryoneisenjoyingthesummerinspiteofbusyschedulesat work.Forthosewhoarefortunateenoughtogetawayfromworkandenjoysome summervacation,mayyouallhaveasafeandenjoyabletime. Ourthemeforthisissueofthe Cable Tow isabout“Masonryandthe Community.”WeasMasonsareallinvolvedinsomanymasoniccharitiesand communityservices.OurGrandmaster,theMostWorshipfulDennisIng,included inhisLongRangeStrategicPlanInitiativesunderFivePaddlesofProgress,the CommunityandPublicRelationsasoneoftheFivePaddlesthatwillhopefully leadustotheachievementofourGrandLodgeMissionandVisionStatement. Thereareseveralcharitiesandcommunityprojectsthatwe,asMasons, areinvolved.AmongthemistheHospitalsforcrippledandburnedchil drenwhichgivefreemedicalcareandtransportationtochildrenunder18yearsof age. ShrinersHospitalsareattheheadofmedicaltreatmentandresearchin orthopaedic,burnandspinalcordinjurycare .AnotherprojectistheScottish Rite’slearningprogramwhichacceptspreschoolchildrenwhohavedifficulty speakingorunderstandingthespokenword,orschoolagechildrenwhohavedif ficultylearningtoread. TheSupremeCouncilalsoadministersseveralscholarshipprogramssuch asSovereignGrandCommander'sScholarship,SamandMillieHillburnScholar ship,PublicSchoolAdministrationScholarshipandShepherdScholarship.In additiontothese,ScottishRiteprovidessomedisasterreliefforfire,flood,earth quake,andhurricanevictims. AlthoughtheworksoftheShrinersHospitalsandtheScottishRitearein thebiggerscale,weasaGrandLodgeandrespectiveLodgescanalsobeinvolved inourowncommunityandincharityinourownsmallways.OurLodgeand otherlodges,aswellasthedifferentconcordantbodies,awardcollegescholar shipstodeservingstudents.WealsoadministertheKeikiIDprogramaswellas partneringwiththecommunityinAdoptAHigwayprogram,tonameafew. Theseprograms,althougharesmallwaysofgivingbacktothecommunity,area surewayofshowingthepeoplethatMasonscare. Brethren,letusputforthourbesteffortstoengageourselvesinsupport ingthecommunityinwhichwelive.Wecanallworktogethertobuildamore graciousandcompassionatesociety bybeingactiveinourrespectivecommunity . Masonshavenationally,regionallyandlocallycontributedtotheircom munitiesinmanyways.Masonryhasmanybranchesthathavespecialcharities thattheysupport.HawaiianLodgememberssupportthelocalShrinersHospital throughfundraisingeffortsforitstransportationfund,scholarshipsforcollege studentsandthousandsofotherworthycauses.OurBrothersarealsoactively involvedasprivatecitizensinothernumerouscharitablecausesclosetotheir hearts.Iknowalotofyouarealreadyperformingcommunityservice;thosethat don’tmayconsiderparticipatinginoneofthemanyactivitiesinthefuture. ThissummerHawaiianLodgewillbehavingourAnnualPicniconJuly 6th attheShrinersBeachClubinWaimanalo.Comeandjoinyourfellowmem bersaswecelebrateanotherprosperousyear.Letusgivethankstothemembers andtheirfamiliesandfriendsthatwillbepreparinganothersuccessfulgathering.
