A (Free) Walk Down Kuala Lumpur's Memory Lane
MEDIA FEATURE A (FREE) WALK DOWN KUALA LUMPUR’S MEMOR Y LA NE Above: the Sultan Abdul Samad building (left) sits across from the Padang and Royal Selangor Club (right) Kuala Lumpur is such a historically rich city despite its youthful age – only 155 years old compared to other major cities of the world. And yet, it has gone through several rites of passage – a tin boom in the mid-19th century, a devastating fire, a big flood, the Japanese Occupation and 151 years of British rule. This city on the banks of the Kelang and Gombak rivers is the capital of Malaysia. It recently emerged as the fourth best shopping destination after New York, Tokyo and London. Not bad for a city whose name refers to the muddy confluence of the two rivers that run through it! Today, all this rich history serves as a highlight to one of the city’s newest tourist attraction – the Free Heritage Guided Tours of Dataran Merdeka. Offered three times a week, these guided tours organized by Kuala Lumpur City Hall take in the history and architecture of the city’s landmark, Dataran Merdeka, and the ten heritage buildings surrounding the historic patch of field. While Dataran Merdeka is an iconic attraction in the city, not many people know the stories behind the ten interesting historical landmark buildings aged over 100 years within the vicinity. Most of the buildings were built in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, with a blend of old colonial, Moorish, Tudor, Neo-Gothic and Islamic architectural styles. -
Little India @ Brickfields,Kuala Lumpur
Little India @ Brickfields Little India of Brickfields is always a bustling street. The colors of the street are simply amazing. You can see vendors lugging bales and bales of sarees through the traffic. You can find sarees of any colors and designs here. Glass bangles too are aplenty. There are even shops which sell traditional Indian candies, savouries, and so on. Please do not miss on the chance to try the famous banana leave rice. Banana leave rice is rice, vegetables of many kinds, meat and lots of curry served on a banana leave. The meal is not complete until you try to finish your meal with only your hand. This is the way to enjoy banana leave rice. To enjoy it the proper way, you’ll have to do it the Indian way. If you pass by stalls which sells Indian snacks, do not forget to try samosa, vadai and ghulab jamun. If you feel thirsty from all the eating, you can try the famous plain lassi or other flavoured lassi like the mango lassi. Mango lassi is a blend of lassi and fresh mangoes. Brickfields used to be the main depot of the Malayan Railway during the British occupation. That depot has been transformed into the Kuala Lumpur Central Station (KL Sentral) which is an important hub for public transport users. Close by is the Thean Hou Temple which is a popular place where Chinese couples register their marriage. Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur is a city of delightful contrasts and one of the most vibrant cities in Asia. -
Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur City Attractions MALAYSIA TOURISM CENTER (MTC) The Malaysia Tourism Center (MTC) is located within a building in Kuala Lumpur, which is both an architectural and historical landmark. Built in 1935, the main building served as the residence of a wealthy mining and rubber estate tycoon, Eu Tong Seng. Its architecture is typically colonial reflecting the era during which it was built. KL TOWER Menara Kuala Lumpur stands majestically a top of Bukit Nanas at 421 meters and 515 meters above sea level, is considered a main feature of the city skyline one and perhaps most enduring images a visitor to KL will encounter. As 5th tallest telecommunications tower, either at an observation deck or from the revolving restaurant, you can manage to get a bird's eye view of the city. JALAN P. RAMLEE ((CLUBBINGCLUBBING AREA) When it comes to nightlife, Jalan P. Ramlee is considered one of the city's hottest venues. Unlike neighbours in the Bukit Bintang area such as Changkat Bukit Bintang, Jalan P. Ramlee has a wackier and more eccentric character. Lively and vibrant after dark, this street is busiest on Friday and Saturday nights, with throngs of party-goers club-hopping from one establishment to another. AQUARIA KLCC Aquaria KLCC are a relatively new addition to Kuala Lumpur's list of tourist attractions. It is located right in the heart of the city at the KL Convention Centre which is a mere 10 minutes walk from Petronas Twin Towers. Getting there is simple as it is accessible by LRT, bus and other modes transportation around KL. -
