The banning of a short story, a novel, a tbeatrical play, a fllm, a poem or any other kind of artistic enterprise is an attestation ofsuch a crucial reference. Exploring the relation ofIslam and literature, with Indonesian Islam as a background, this thesis will examine the short story Langit !Ma{-ïn !Mentfll1l!J WIÏtten by Kipandjikusmin. This study will analyze the linûtations imposed upon this short story in accordance with what was considered to he the Islamic Weltanschauung. Langit !MaKjn fMouill1l!J' which was published in August 1968 in the magazine Sastra, was condemned by the majority ofIndonesian Muslims, for it was considered to he blasphemous, insulting Gad, the Prophet, the archangels, the culamiP and the kiyai [traditional scholars], and il was judged 10 he in contravention of the Constitution of '45. Various stands were maintained either to defend or criticize the short story. In lerms ofthe public reaetion to Langit ~ !MDuf1l1l!J' the critiques coneem three aspects; legal, lilerary and religious views. Apart from such views, the thesis also examines Islamie teaehings on intellectual freedom and on freedom ofspeech. And to realize that lilerature is a representation ofthe milieu it is produced in, this study elucidales the socio-politieal context in which Langit ~ !Mentf1l1l!J was WIÏUen. It will he shown thal the political lurbulence that occurred during the Old Orcier regime, especially in the era ofthe so-ealled Guided Democracy, and thal the Communist movement of the 1960s are foremosl among the influences on the milieu in which this short slory was WIÏtten. In addition 10 the socio-political context, this thesis assesses the theological aspect which focuses on the significant connection of the Islamic Weltanschauung and literature as an indicator ofthe status on freedom ofliterary expression in a Muslimsociety. i tfsomt Larelation précaire entre l'artetl'Islamest une question épineuse. The writer is very grateful to alI the institutions wbich provided him with the fmancial support that enabled him to write this thesis. It became popular amongst art students in Yogyakarta, and formed a significant style of painting which generally is characterised by the use of casual juxtapositions of disparate ideas and subjects resulting in absurd, startling, and sometimes disturbing images. In this thesis, Yogyakartan Surrealism is seen as the expression in painting of various social, cultural, and economic developments taking place rapidly and simultaneously in Yogyakarta's urban landscape.

THE THORNY ROSE: THE AVOIDANCE OF PASSION IN MODERN INDONESIAN LITERATURE1 Harry Aveling One of the important shortcomings of modern Indonesian literature is the failure of its authors, on the whole young, well-educated men of the upper and more modernized strata of society, to deal in a convincing manner with the topic of adult heterosexual passion. This problem includes, and partly arises from, an inadequacy in portraying realistic female char acters which verges, at times, on something which might be considered sadism. What is involved here is not merely an inability to come to terms with Western concepts of romantic love, as explicated, for example, by the late C. S. Lewis in his book The Allegory of Love. The failure to depict adult heterosexual passion on the part of modern Indonesian authors also stands in strange contrast to the frankness and gusto with which the writers of the various branches of traditional Indonesian and Malay litera ture dealt with this topic. Indeed it stands in almost as great a contrast with the practice of Peninsular Malay literature today. In Javanese literature, as Pigeaud notes in his history, The Literature of Java, "Poems and tales describing erotic situations are very much in evidence . descriptions of this kind are to be found in almost every important mythic, epic, historical and romantic Javanese text."^ In Sundanese literature, there is not only the open violence of Sang Kuriang's incestuous desires towards his mother (who conceived him through inter course with a dog), and a further wide range of openly sexual, indeed often heavily Oedipal stories, but also the crude direct ness of the trickster Si-Kabajan tales, which so embarrassed one commentator, Dr.

  • Epistemologi Intuitif Dalam Resepsi Estetis H.B. Jassin Terhadap Al-Qur'an
Epistemologi Intuitif dalam Resepsi Estetis H.B. Jassin terhadap Al-Qur’an Fadhli Lukman1 Abstract This article discusses two projects of well-known literary critic H.B. Jassin on the Qur’an. Jassin’s great career in literary criticism brought him to the domain of al-Qur’an, with his translation of the Qur’an Al-Qur’anul Karim Bacaan Mulia and his rearrangement of the writing of the Qur’an into poetic makeup. Using descriptive and analytical methods, this article concludes that the two works of H.B. Jassin came out of his aesthetic reception of the Qur’an. Epistemologically, these two kinds of reception are the result of Jassin intuitive senses, which he nourished for a long period. Abstrak Artikel ini membincang dua proyek sastrawan kenamaan Indonesia, H.B. Jassin, seputar Al-Qur’an.

It may be useful to give a short survey of such materials as have come to my notice, even though this survey is of necessity incomplete. First of all it should be mentioned that literary, cultural and scholarly journals and magazines have discovered modern Indonesian literature and regularly or incidentally publish translations of poetry, short stories, essays etc. The well-known journal INDONESIA, issued half-yearly by the Modern Indonesia Project of Cornell University, has published a number of Indonesian stories in English translation, for example Idrus' stories Fujinkai and Och... Och ... Och (vol. 2) and Surabaja (vol. 5), Ajip Rosidi's stories Among the Family (vol. 1) and A Japanese (vol. 6), while Heather Sutherland (vol. 6) and Harry Aveling (vol. 7) con- tributed essays on modern literature. Another magazine which deserves to be mentioned as an interesting effort to make available to a wider audience modern literary and other cultural products from Southeast Asia including Indonesia is TENGGARA (tenggara means Southeast). So far five issues have come out, .the latest one bearing the year 1969. Another volume, containing Southeast Asian plays, has been announced. Several short stories, poems and essays on Indonesian literature have been published so far.

  • Chavchay Saifullah and Muhidin M Dahlan Review of Sociology of Literature
Moral Rebellion and Religiusity in Pious Muslim Novels: Chavchay Saifullah and Muhidin M Dahlan Review of Sociology of Literature Herdi Sahrasad1, Muhammad Ridwan2 1Senior Lecturer at University of Paramadina, Jakarta, Indonesia 2State Islamic University of North Sumatera, Indonesia [email protected] Abstract : This article argues that novelists Muhidin M Dahlan and Chapchay Syaifullah tried to make moral and religious rebellions in their work as a result of existing social conditions. They rebel against normative and established values, old order and social arrangements. They are creative in the context of literature as a fictional world built with the spirit of renewal and enlightenment. And here, imagination is a significant creative process for deconstruction and enlightenment as well as upheaval in religiosity, religious rebelion, religious dissent. In this context, Muhidin and Syaifullah novels do not place religious life as a problem solver. Borrowing Goenawan Mohamad's definition that works that can be categorized as "religious literature" are works that "place religious life as a solution to problems", it appears that Muhidin and Syaifullah's novels cannot be called "religious literature" in the conventional sense. In this case, as a religiosity rebellion - where religiosity is defined as a philosophy of life or awareness of 'His breath' in everyday life, that is an awareness that is entirely personal and because it is personal, everyone has the right to sue, question, reject or deconstruct his own religious teachings. Keyword : Manikebu; LEKRA; Payudara; novel; religiousity; santeri; Muslim; rebellion; reform. I. Introduction Modern literature is the art of language with a plurality of ideas, imagination and themes in it, whether it is poetry or prose, and it cannot be separated from language.
