Department Profile Name of the Department: Department of Music & Dramatics Year of Establishment: 1984 1) From the Desk of Head: I Dr. Anjali Vasant Nigwekar presently heading the Department of Music & Dramatics from 04 December 2018 onwards. The Department is one of its own kinds in western Maharashtra where various subjects in Performing Arts are conducted under one roof. We have one year Certificate course, two/one year Diploma course, one year Bridge course, two year Master of Performing Arts MPA &Ph.D. courses. Keeping the needs of the students belonging to the university affiliated area in mind we try to solve the purpose of aspiring students to educate and train them in the relevant field according to their choice of interest. Subjects covered in the field of performing arts are Indian Classical Music both Vocal & Instrumental up to Research, Theatre from certificate to Research, Diploma in Classical Dance (Katthak & Bharatnatyam), Diploma in PLC, One year Diploma in Theatre. Department strives hard to be an outstanding Department to propagate and promote the rich tradition and legacy of Indian classical Music & Theatre also other allied arts. Another objective of the Department is to develop awareness amongst the common man about the performing arts by synchronizing them during various Programs, Seminars and workshops in the field of Performing arts. 2) Brief History of the Department: A progressive Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj was a great reformer of social educational cultural practices. He extended his royal patronage to the arts,Theatre, Music, Painting and sculpture etc. Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj invited Khan Alladiyan Khan of Jaypur Gharana from Uniyara (Rajasthan). It proved his love for Music. Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj appointed Khan Alladiyan Khan Saheb as Darbari Gayak. Khan Saheb developed his new style or Gayaki after loss his original voice. After that time this new Gayaki is recognized as Jaypur Attrauli Gharana or Kolhapur Gharana. Kolhapur is known as Kalapur. Great Chitra-Maharshi Baburao Pentar, Chandrakant Mandre,Ravindra Mestri,Chitra- Tapaswi Bhalaji Pendharkar, Arun Sarnaik,Ustad Alladiya Khan Saheb, Nivruttibua Sarnaik,Shankarrao Sarnaik, Shri Govindrav Tembe,Sangeet Surya Keshavrao bhosale and many other artists who have brought great fame for Kolhapur. In a view of increasing interest in the Classical Music and other arts in the young generation, Shivaji University decides to start Music and Dramatics Department. The Department was formally inaugurated by the great Vocalist late Pt. Mallikarjun Mansoor on 20th July 1984. Pt.Mallikarjun Mansoor Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, The great vocalist Laxmibai Jadhav trust, Late M.S.Karekar, Great Musician C.Balaji, Shivaji Vidyapeeth Sevak Sangha, Hon.Tatyasaheb Kore, Pudharikar Pratapsinha Jadhav, Shahu Shahir P.B.Salunkhe and many other charity institutes helped rendered financial help to start the Pt.Mallikarjun Mansoor wing. In September 1986 Late Padmashri P.L.Deshpande inaugurated Dramatics Wing. In June 1991, great Tabla Master Allarakha Khan Saheb inaugurated Instrumental Wing. In June 1993, Department started Ph.D. Course. Padmashri P.L.Deshpande Since last 36PP years, the Music and Dramatics Department of Shivaji University succeed in giving the guidance to the various students from different wings i.e. Vocal and Instrumental Music ,Drma,Dance,Drawings under one roof. Department has successfully organized some Music festival such as Rajarshi Shahu Sangeet Rajani, Gharana Sammelan, Lok kala mahotsav, Vasant Kanetkar Charchsatra, various Sangeet-Natak Mahotsav, workshops on Harmonium and Tabla. Present focus of the Department is to train, prepare students to become good performers, academicians etc. and Kolhapur being a Kalapur. Students and faculty have a vast scope to involve in Vocal Gharana Research & Theatre research. Use of ICT facility for students and faculty in teaching and learning process is highly appreciated. Support and encouragement, so that students may develop their artistic potential to the highest level possible. Being performing Arts Department aim is to produce performing artists. Goals of the Department: Main goal is to promote students to develop research ability in music and drama with scientific sense. To develop among students an analytical, creative and intuitive understanding of music as a cultural language Core Values of the Departments: To develop aesthetic sense in the field of Performing arts and foster the practical ability to express in performances.
