Claviceps purpurea is one of the most important species, being a major producer of EAs that infect more than 400 species of monocotyledonous plants. Rye, barley, wheat, millet, oats, and triticale are the main crops affected by EAs, with rye having the highest rates of fungal infection. The 12 major EAs are ergometrine (Em), ergotamine (Et), ergocristine (Ecr), ergokryptine (Ekr), ergosine (Es), and ergocornine (Eco) and their epimers ergotaminine (Etn), egometrinine (Emn), egocristinine (Ecrn), ergokryptinine (Ekrn), ergocroninine (Econ), and ergosinine (Esn). Given that many food products are based on cereals (such as bread, pasta, cookies, baby food, and confectionery), the surveillance of these toxic substances is imperative. Although acute mycotoxicosis by EAs is rare, EAs remain a source of concern for human and animal health as food contamination by EAs has recently increased. Environmental conditions, such as low temperatures and humid weather before and during flowering, influence contamination agricultural products by EAs, contributing to the Citation: Agriopoulou, S. Cellulose is also the most abundant organic polymer on earth. Cellulose digestion yields simple sugars that can be used to produce biofuels. www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Fungal diversity driven by bark features afects phorophyte preference in epiphytic orchids from southern China Lorenzo Pecoraro1*, Hanne N. Rasmussen2, Sofa I. F. Gomes3, Xiao Wang1, Vincent S. F. T. Merckx3, Lei Cai4 & Finn N. Rasmussen5 Epiphytic orchids exhibit varying degrees of phorophyte tree specifcity. We performed a pilot study to investigate why epiphytic orchids prefer or avoid certain trees. We selected two orchid species, Panisea unifora and Bulbophyllum odoratissimum co-occurring in a forest habitat in southern China, where they showed a specifc association with Quercus yiwuensis and Pistacia weinmannifolia trees, respectively. We analysed a number of environmental factors potentially infuencing the relationship between orchids and trees. Diference in bark features, such as water holding capacity and pH were recorded between Q. yiwuensis and P. weinmannifolia, which could infuence both orchid seed germination and fungal diversity on the two phorophytes. Morphological and molecular culture-based methods, combined with metabarcoding analyses, were used to assess fungal communities associated with studied orchids and trees. A total of 162 fungal species in 74 genera were isolated from bark samples. Only two genera, Acremonium and Verticillium, were shared by the two phorophyte species. Metabarcoding analysis confrmed the presence of signifcantly diferent fungal communities on the investigated tree and orchid species, with considerable similarity between each orchid species and its host tree, suggesting that the orchid-host tree association is infuenced by the fungal communities of the host tree bark. Epiphytism is one of the most common examples of commensalism occurring in terrestrial environments, which provides advantages, such as less competition and increased access to light, protection from terrestrial herbivores, and better fower exposure to pollinators and seed dispersal 1,2. -

P.corymbiferum Westling) Occurrence P. hirsutum seems to be the most common and widespread species occurring in storage. This disease occurs at harvest and in storage. Symptoms In storage, initial symptoms are seen as water soaked areas on the outer surfaces of scales. This leads to development of the green-blue, powdery mold on the surface of the lesions. When the bulbs are cut, these lesions are seen as tan or grey colored areas. There may be total deterioration with a secondary watery rot. Spores from infected heads are spread when they are cracked prior to planting. If slightly infected cloves are planted, they may rot before plants come up, or the seedlings may not survive. Multiple campus Janakpur, Nepal [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper documents the wild edible fruits of tropical and subtropical forest of Palpa District, West Nepal. Thirty-seven plant species under 17 families and 27 genera were identifi ed as wild edible fruit. Over 86% percent of them were trees and shrubs (32 species), 11% herbs (4 species) and the remaining 3% (1 species) woody climbers. Moraceae (9 species), Rosaceae (7 species), Anacardiaceae, Berberidaceae, Combretaceae, Fabaceae, Solanaceae and Rutaceae (2 species each) were the most common families constituting about 75.7% of edible plants. The remaining 24.3% (9 species) of edible plants were distributed among 9 families and 9 genera. A considerable number of wild fruits are sold in market. These are Aegle marmelos, Artocarpus integra, Artocarpus lakoocha, Choerospondias axillaris, Myrica esculenta, Phoenix humilis, Phyllanthus emblica, Prunus persica, Pyracantha crenulata,Tamarindus indica, Terminalia bellirica, Terminalia chebula, Zanthoxylum armatum and Zizyphus mauritiana. Medicinal uses of some major economically important fruits are also documented.
