  • Timeline Port Beaufort & Malgas
TIMELINE FOR PORT BEAUFORT & MALGAS 1488: The Portuguese recognized the Breede River Mouth as the finest natural anchorage on the whole southern seaboard of Africa. 1576: King Sebastian’s navigator, Manuel De Mesquita Perestrello called the bay, St. Sebastian’s Bay, after “Dom Sebastiao, the most serene King of Portugal”, and the west bank “Cape Infanta”. 1790: San Sebastian Bay was surveyed by the French sea captain, Captain Duminy. 1798: During May, the Breede River mouth was visited by Lady Anne Barnard and her husband, who was Colonial Secretary under the British Administration, with Jacob Van Reenen of Slang River. 1800: Landrost Anthonie Faure reported to Governor Sir George Young that the river was suitable for navigation “up to six hours inland, with excellent safe loading – places for small vessels along either bank”. 1802: Baron Von Buchenröder visited San Sebastian’s Bay, crossed the river in a small boat and pronounced it “only three to four feet deep at low tide, thus only suitable for sloops and long flat vessels, such as one sees on the Main, Nekker and Weser in Germany”. He also found an English ship anchored in the Breede River. 1803: Dirk Gysbert Van Reenen gave the same advice (as Baron Von Buchenröder) to General Janssens. 1813: Malagas got its name from the farm belonging to Adriaan Odendaal, “Malagas Craal gelegen aan de Breede River” which took its name from a former Khoikhoi Chief. 1817: It was found that the bar was navigable by vessels displacing not more than six feet of water. Lord Charles Somerset named the east bank of Breede River after the title of his father, the 5th Duke of Beaufort.

1.2.2018 Groot Jongfontein, Port Beaufort, Witsand A detour leads us to Groot Jongfontein, where we find a very nice community campsite with shaded tables and seating right next to the beach. It looks very tempting to stay here, but it is too early to stop already as we just started our trip this morning. Our next destination is Witsand. On the scenic route we drive away from the coast. Only a few kilometers inland the landscape is changing dramatically. It is getting hotter and drier and the soil is turning red. We see many ostriches, game and sheep which have adopted the red color of the soil the stay on. 1 As we are cruising along, suddenly two red warning lights on the dashboard turn on: for brake pads and brake fluid! The RPM is on zero even so the engine is running. We stop on the dusty hot road side, open the hood and check the brake fluid, which is full. We pull on the cables, push all the fuses and suddenly the RPM awakes to life again and the warning lights turn off… We continue driving, but are wondering what could have caused this problem. The Breerivier river mouth in Witsand is quite wide. Just 3 km north in Port Beaufort another natural swimming pool was built into the sea. For Dewi it is time to go for swim while Werner is feeding the fish – with no returns… In Witsand we just park up on the beach for the night. A few locals are greeting us, some are stopping to chat with us and one guy is even sharing his favorite fishing spot with us.

News & Views Distribution of economic mineral resource potential in the Western Cape Page 1 of 4 The distribution of the economic mineral resource AUTHORS: potential in the Western Cape Province Luncedo Ngcofe1 Doug I.Cole1 South Africa is blessed with vast mineral resources. The formal exploitation of mineral resources in South Africa started with copper mining in Namaqualand (near Springbok in the Northern Cape Province) in the mid-1800s. AFFILIATION: 1 The discovery of diamonds near Kimberley in 1867 and gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886 led to the significant Council for Geoscience, growth of the mining industry in South Africa. In 1995, it was reported that approximately 57 different minerals Cape Town, South Africa were sourced from 816 mines and quarries,1 with the most important mining provinces being the North West (as a large producer of platinum group metals and gold); Gauteng (gold); Mpumalanga (coal) and the Free State CORRESPONDENCE TO: (gold). Although the Western Cape is classified as being the least productive in terms of mineral resources,1 it Luncedo Ngcofe has a large potential for the exploitation of industrial minerals. These often neglected resources comprise a highly diverse group of vitally important minerals that are used in a variety of applications ranging from everyday products EMAIL: to highly sophisticated materials. Here we describe economic or potentially economic minerals occurring in the [email protected] Western Cape in terms of their geological setting. POSTAL ADDRESS: Geology Council for Geoscience, PO Box The occurrence of a mineral resource is always determined by the geological setting of a region.

Nearly fifty years ago the International Committee of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS) came into being. This body has held fifteen triennial international congresses to date, the most recent being in Leipzig in 1984. With its headquarters in Louvain, Belgium, it publishes a bibliographical and information periodical, Onoma, an indispensable aid to researchers. Since 1967 the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) has provided for co-ordination and liaison between countries to further the standardization of geographical names. To date eleven working sessions and four international conferences have been held. In most countries of the world there are institutes and centres for onomastic research, official bodies for the national standardization of place names, and names societies.
