Dear Parishioners,

It is quite common today in our society that a certain word may have various meanings depending on how it is used. The word “pairing” is one such example.

When the latest tech gadget is purchased more often than not some type of “pairing” must be done. In other words, a connection between two devices must be established, for exam- ple, a cell phone and the car’s audio system, or a computer and wireless headsets. Using these devises together is great when the connection is made.

In the world of food, the word, “pairing” is used quite often. The experts of gourmet din- ing will advise what type of wine should be paired with the food we eat. The thought behind this type of paring is that it will make everything taste better.

In today’s Gospel, the Lord is “pairing”. Jesus clearly states that the two greatest com- mandments are not only connected, but they are a pair that cannot be separated. This pair of commandments is often referred to the as “Golden Rule”. When Our Lord said these words, they were very familiar to the listeners of the day. Jesus paired two well known scripture verses from the Old Testament, Deuteronomy 6:5 (you shall love the LORD, your God, with your whole heart, and with your whole being, and with your whole strength) and Leviticus 19:18. (...you shall love your neighbor as yourself). Keeping and strengthening the connection between these scriptures verses keeps the “golden”.

It is helpful to know that when the question about the greatest commandment was posed, Jesus was well aware that there were 613 commandments in the Torah (the first five books of the Bible). He did not disregard these laws, but pointed to the connection between them and the two greatest commandments when he said, “On these two commandments the whole law is based and the prophets as well.” (Matthew 22:40)

As we strive day in and day out to follow Our Lord, lets remember that “pairing” with our God and neighbour is important. Just as a connection between tech devices enhances their usefulness and the link between certain food and drink may help us to enjoy a new taste experi- ence, allowing our connection to God and neighbour to grow will deepen our understanding of mercy, compassion and love.

Peace & Prayers, Fr Dmytro Христос посеред нас! Christ is among us!

The Redemptorists and parishioners of St. Joseph’s extend a warm welcome to all our guests. Thank you for worshipping with us today.

St. John the Theologian - September 26

St. John the Theologian - On September 26th our Church commemorates the repose of St. John the Theologian, the beloved disciple of the Lord. St. John was present at all of the major events in Christ’s ministry. Following the Resurrection he became Mary’s guardian, as Christ had asked him to do while hanging on the Cross but was eventually exiled to the island of Patmos because of his preaching of the Gospel. While serving the Sunday Liturgy on Patmos, John had a vision which he instructed his disciple to write down which has been handed down to us as the Book of Revelation He is the author of five of the books of the New Testament, including his famous Gospel which is one of the most beautiful works to have ever been written both for its simplicity and precision in articulating exactly who Jesus Christ was. He died on September 26 while an old man and is commemorated throughout the Church. He is one of three Saints in the entire history of the Church who have been given the title “the Theologian” and this is because of his genuine knowledge of Christ which was based in his living his message of the Gospel rather than on theoretical ideas.

“Forgiveness is the name of love practiced among people who love poorly. The hard truth is that all people love poorly. We need to forgive and be forgiven every day, every hour increasingly. That is the great work of love among the fellowship of the weak that is the human family.” ― Henri J.M. Nouwen Divine Liturgy Intentions September 22-29
