Anselm's Cur Deus Homo
Anselm’s Cur Deus Homo: A Meditation from the Point of View of the Sinner Gene Fendt Elements in Anselm's Cur Deus Homo point quite differently from the usual view of it as the locus classicus for a theory of Incarnation and Atonement which exhibits Christ as providing the substitutive revenging satisfaction for the infinite dishonor God suffers at the sin of Adam. This meditation will attempt to bring out how the rhetorical ergon of the work upon faith and conscience drives the sinner to see the necessity of the marriage of human with divine natures offered in Christ and how that marriage raises both man and creation out of sin and its defects. This explanation should exhibit both to believers, who seek to understand, and to unbelievers (primarily Jews and Muslims), from a common root, a solution "intelligible to all, and appealing because of its utility and the beauty of its reasoning" (1.1). Anselm’s Cur Deus Homo is the locus classicus for a theory of Incarnation and Atonement which exhibits Christ as providing the substitutive revenging satisfaction for the infinite dishonor God suffers at the sin of Adam (and company).1 There are elements in it, however, which seem to point quite differently from such a view. This meditation will attempt to bring further into the open how the rhetorical ergon of the work upon “faith and conscience”2 shows something new in this Paschal event, which cannot be well accommodated to the view which makes Christ a scapegoat killed for our sin.3 This ergon upon the conscience I take—in what I trust is a most suitably monastic fashion—to be more important than the theoretical theological shell which Anselm’s discussion with Boso more famously leaves behind. -

Las Vegas: Parmenides Publishing 2009. 535 pages US$48.00 (cloth ISBN 978-1-930972-21-6) When the present book, the long-awaited follow-up to Halper’s 1989 volume on the central books of the Metaphysics, is joined by the concluding volume on books iota-nu that we may hope to appear as promised in 2011, the three volumes together will surely constitute the most important and welcome event in Aristotle scholarship since the publication of Joseph Owens’ The Doctrine of Being in the Aristotelian Metaphysics in 1978. Indeed, Halper’s opus may be seen as a manifestation of a certain coming of age in the modern study of ancient philosophy, in which neither historicism nor an uncritical embrace of the interpretive tradition any longer prevent engaging the ancients in philosophical inquiry that both honors the historical context of ancient thought and is responsive to contemporary philosophical concerns. Not that Halper imposes contemporary concerns upon his reading of Aristotle; on the contrary, he finds that efforts to use Aristotle’s thought to address contemporary issues have tended to obscure his reasoning, and it is with Aristotle’s reasoning—his systematic argumentation—that Halper is most concerned. Halper recounts how the early 20th century projected onto Aristotle a developmental path from idealism to empiricism, whereas in the postwar era he came to be seen as a linguistic philosopher. What these hermeneutical strategies have in common, Halper discerns, is not that they set out to make Aristotle speak to contemporary concerns, but rather simply that the absence of a systematic intentionality accorded to the text leads them to seek an animating dynamic outside the text, ‘and it is natural that the connections they think of are those that are most alive and interesting to them’ (36). -

Albert the Great on the Subject of Metaphysics and Demonstrating the Existence of God TIMOTHY B. NOONE In his comprehensive study of Thomas Aquinas's Sen* tentia super Metaphysicam, James Doig introduces Albert the Great as one of the commentators whose interpretation of Aristotle's Meta- physics Thomas intended to challenge. In particular, Doig alleges that Albert's understanding of the formal object (or, in other terminology, the subject) of metaphysics is heavily indebted to the writings of Averroes, although the modern scholar acknowledges that Albert does not follow the Averroistic interpretation in all respects.1 Furthermore, Doig contends that Albert's own Metaphysics following Averroes's schema of metaphysical knowledge, contains no proof of the existence of God as the cause of being but simply relies on the proof of God as the cause of motion, as was developed in Aristotle's Physics.2 1. Paper €68.00 Reviewed by Alessandra Foscati University of Lisbon [email protected] Anyone undertaking research in the fields of medieval science, scholastic medicine (its institutional and epistemological aspects), alchemy, and the history of medicine will inevitably compare Chiara Crisciani’s work and the doctrines set forth in these studia, especially with regard to matters of everyday practice.This hefty volume is dedicated to Crisciani as a birthday gift in recognition of her outstanding, tireless work and generosity, as shown by her frequent involvement in research by colleagues and students. Edited by her colleague and friend, Gabriella Zuccolin, it is published by SISMEL (Società Internazionale per lo studio del Medioevo Latino) as part of the Micrologus Library series. Having published many of Crisciani’s works, SISMEL is the ideal promoter of this project, given the international character and excellence of its output and, in particular, the interdisciplinary nature of the Micrologus Library series. The importance of the book is immediately reflected in the calibre of the contributing scholars, who are among the best known in their respective dis- ciplines.The subject matter combines (mostly natural) philosophy with vari- ous aspects of medical science, and the topics chosen are related to the areas covered by Crisciani’s research.In many cases, the contributions take shape as the ideal continuation of her studies. For example, Marilyn Nicoud focuses on the medical consilia, whose structure was outlined by Crisciani as a new literary genre that became established between the 13th and 14th centuries, while Agostino Paravicini Bagliani examines a 16th-century text on the pro- longation of life, which Crisciani has studied extensively. -
The Friendships of St. Thomas
THE FRIENDSHIPS OF ST. THOMAS BRO. CYRIL DORE, 0 . P. T . Thomas Aquinas is a perfect type of that harmonious un ion of sanctity and learning which characterizes the great Doctors of the Church. A tender affection and a sympathetic understanding, which unites hearts entirely devoted to God, can be observed in all his friendships. While bearing himself affably towards all, the Angelic Doctor had but few intimate friends and these were persons of singular learning and holiness. From a consideration of these few, we can see the great influence for good which he exerted, the wide extent of his knowledge, and the deep penetration of his in tellectual prowess. They not only give us an insight into the reaction of personality on personality and the interplay of mind on mind, but in a very special manner, they exhibit the practical aspect of his writ ings. From the investigations of his biographers, the friendships of St. Thomas can be considered under four headings; namely, within his own Order, in the religious world, in the academic world, and in the political world. Amongst the members of the Dominican Order, the first friend mentioned is John of St. Julian. He is referred to as the old adviser and dear familiar friend of St. Thomas.1 This celebrated preacher directed the footsteps of the young Aquinas during the three years previous to his entrance into the Dominican Order. As a student at the University of Naples, the mind and imagination of Aquinas were captivated by the sanctity, the learning and the marvellous activ ity of the Dominicans.
