Years later, when talking about the Norton engine, he said 'What you have to remember is that the Manx Norton is a production engine. I can get flash power, but too much boosting can lead to trouble. He reckoned that bottom end trouble was unlikely, but that the Achilles' heel was the highly stressed drive-side main bearing. This Lacey modified as a matter of course'. Vale Robert Henry (Bob) Satterly

Chemical Engineer and the Vincent Man 10th August 1928 - 20th May 2018

Robert Henry (Bob) Satterly was an outstanding Chemical Engineer & mathematical wizard who combined a successful career in metal pretreatment & coatings for the automotive & appliance industries with a lifelong love of the Vincent marque. He was known as Mr. Bob by his many business friends in Asia. Bob grew up in Westmead NSW Australia living with his mother and younger sister. Growing up in Westmead in the 1940s meant an outside dunny and no running hot water. They were different days compared to today. Bob topped his class at Parramatta High and went on to top his class at the NSW Institute of Technology. His early days were spent messing about with Nortons and Triumphs but a chance meeting with Vince Darderi at Col. Crothers' motorcycle dealership in Parramatta converted Bob from Ariels to Vincents. He never looked back! Together with his school chums Bill Forbes and Ken Jones, Bob traversed NSW and Victoria in the late 1940s and early 1950s on his Vincent twins. Bob was the go-to man for metal preparation for paint and rust-proofing and finally he went to Asia where, for over thirty years, he was the guru. This did not stop Bob from riding his Vincents though. At every opportunity he would be back in Australia or somewhere else in the world to participate in a Vincent rally or event. At one point Bob decided to build a supercharged sprint Vincent and of course he consulted with Phil Irving beforehand. The result was a monster producing well over 100 bhp. The machine still lives in Victoria. It was sidecars though that took Bob’s fancy on the road and over the years he had many. It was a sidecar that led to his serious accident on Jamberoo Pass when a shock absorber sheared and sent him and machine flying off the road and planting (?!) them in a tree 20m above the ground. Not deterred, after the knee and hip were replaced he continued to ride outfits for many years. Bob gave many people very sage advice; he advised on camshaft timing, ignition, bearing tolerances and much more. We will not see the likes of Bob Satterly again. R.I.P Contributed by Alyn Vincent

Technical Talk Dave’s Diary No. 3 (Early Amal Carburettor Types, part 1 of 3)

While scrolling through the ebay pages trying to find Zinc Zinc Bronze Casting a suitable Amal carby for one of my projects, I Diecasting Diecasting (from 1929) encountered a minefield of mis-representation (from 1933) (from 1940) Type within the description of early type Amal Carbys. Type Type With a bit of research, (to challenge the e-bay 4 74 274 experts) I found the Carburettors introduced before 1940 can be distinguished from the later types as the 5 75 275 former have four, secondary, air holes around the 6 76 276 base of the body. From 1940 on, the 4 air holes were replaced with a single air hole located at the mouth 29 89 289 of the carburettor, facilitating the use of an air filter for both primary and secondary air supply. It appears that both types of carburettor remained in production up to 1954.

As there are 12 different carburettor types, it is Size Choke Carb Type Jet Blocks important to have the correct size jet block and No Size choke combination in each category. For 4, 74,274 4/057 17 21/32" identification, the bore size numbers are usually 4, 74,274 4/058 21 23/32" stamped on top of the jet block. The slide must be matched with the carburettor and 4, 74,274 4/059 25 25/32" is marked on the top with the carby type number and the cutaway as recommended by the 5,75,275 5/057 28 13/16" motorcycle manufacturer. The latter numbers relate 5,75,275 5/058 33 7/8" to the cutaway size in 1/8” increments. EG. a No 4 cutaway is 4x 1/8”= ½”.
