welcome to the first monthly ALL-CHAPEL WORSHIP CELEBRATION

of Imago Dei Anglican Church

August 30, 2020 WHAT’S IN A NAME?

We believe God is Trinity, that is, God has always existed as a community of persons dwelling in perfect love and that he made humanity in his own image, the imago Dei - to share in that love. Sadly, that image in each of us has been marred and broken as our individual stories are riddled with pain, disappointment, broken relationships, loss, and at times hopelessness. But your story isn’t all there is. There’s another story that began before you were born and continues to be written right now… it’s God’s story of reconcilia- tion and restoration. Right now God is inviting you and me to join this story; to allow ourselves to be reconciled and restored in his love, and to bring this to the broken world around us. The doorway to participating in this story is Jesus, whose life, death, and resurrection was for this very purpose. When we join God’s story through Jesus, we find out who we really are: fiercely loved by a God who desires to restore the imago Dei in you. We are weak and broken people who don’t have it all together but desire God and desire to follow in the way of Jesus. We are not just a worship service, a do-good agency, a social club, or a group of friends. We are a collection of regional chapels across this region who together seek to enjoy God, love others, and join with Jesus in the restoration of all things.

COVID GUIDELINES We recognize you may have different convictions and practices at home or with your circle of friends, but for this gathering, we have some important guidelines.

When you arrive, there will be an area marked by cones designating the portion of the lawn where Imago Dei Guidelines apply. Upon entering this coned-off area, we need your cooperation with the following:

We need individuals or family units to socially distance at all times.

• This means remaining a minimum of 6’ away from other individuals or families. • This includes refraining from close-contact greetings within the Imago - designated area, even if both parties would otherwise not practice distancing. • Children need to remain with their own family unit, regardless of private arrangements you may have established with other families. • Certain people may prefer more distancing than 6’ for their specific circumstances. We just ask that you be conscientious of those around you when choosing a place to sit.

We need adults and atrium-aged children to mask when distancing is difficult to maintain such as when walking around and when coming up for communion. When you are seated or standing in one place, you may take off your mask if you prefer.

These guidelines apply to the Imago Dei gathering area,which does not include the waterfront parking lot or other areas of the park. That said, we humbly ask you to consider the following:

• Please remember you are ambassadors of our church in this public space, even before/after the service and outside the marked area. • Please consider that a number of church members we’ve talked to are concerned that their boundaries or convictions may not be respected Remember people don’t have to respond to a physical greeting or justify their convictions.

Thank you for your help with this! PROCESSIONAL HYMN Praise to the Lord, the Almighty THE ACCLAMATION & COLLECT FOR PURITY

Old walls built by our fathers with Cold stones marking the boundaries Frozen in time and passivity Held us in this captivity

Old walls we built around our Cold hearts detached from our minds Hearthstones removed from the fire Truth divorced from desire

All the things set in stone now are shaking Releasing the ones you are waking Through the dark of the tomb you are breaking See the Son now arise in the land of the dawn See the Son now arise in the land of the dawm

Come rebuild our foundations Establish kingdom formation Light fires that blaze in the hearth that we Carry out to the dark

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Let us pray.

O Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow after us, that we may continually be given to good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE LESSONS

The Lord is the great God, the great king above all gods, O that today you would listen to his voice. Harden not your hearts. Praise to you Lord God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Please be seated for the Ministry of the Word. A Lesson from the Book of Nehemiah (8:1-18, NIV)

All the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel.

So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.

Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithi- ah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbadd- anah, Zechariah and Meshullam.

Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there. They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.

Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.” Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.

On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the priests and the Levites, gathered around Ezra the teacher to give attention to the words of the Law. They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded through Moses, that the Israelites were to live in temporary shelters during the festival of the seventh month and that they should proclaim this word and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem: “Go out into the hill country and bring back branches from olive and wild olive trees, and from myrtles, palms and shade trees, to make temporary shelters”—as it is written.

So the people went out and brought back branches and built themselves temporary shelters on their own roofs, in their courtyards, in the courts of the house of God and in the square by the Water Gate and the one by the Gate of Ephraim. The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated it like this. And their joy was very great.

Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read from the Book of the Law of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation, there was an assembly.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 26 New Coverdale Psalter

1 Be my judge, O LORD, for I have walked innocently; * my trust has been in the LORD; therefore I shall not fall. 2 Test me, O LORD, and prove me; * examine my heart and my mind. 3 For your loving-kindness is ever before my eyes, * and I will walk in your truth. 4 I have not dwelt with evildoers, * neither will I have fellowship with the deceitful. 5 I have hated the company of the wicked, * and will not sit among the ungodly. 6 I will wash my hands in innocence, O LORD, * and so will I go to your altar, 7 That I may lift up the voice of thanksgiving * and tell of all your wondrous works. 8 LORD, I have loved the habitation of your house * and the place where your honor dwells. 9 O take not away my soul with the sinners, * nor my life with the bloodthirsty, 10 Whose hands are full of wickedness, * and their right hand full of bribes. 11 But as for me, I will walk innocently; * O deliver me, and be merciful unto me. 12 My foot stands firm; * I will praise the LORD in the congregations. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

A Lesson from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans (12:1-8, NIV)

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleas- ing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL HYMN Be Thou My Vision (vs 1-2)

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew. Matthew 16:21-27, NIV + Glory to you, Lord Christ.

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the con- cerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Vision

THE NICENE CREED

Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Please add your own prayers after each bid, either silently or aloud.

In joy and hope let us pray to the Father.

That our risen Savior may fill us and all the churches in Maine and around the world with the joy of his glorious and life-giving resurrection;

We pray to the Father, Hear our prayer. That isolated and persecuted churches around the world may find fresh strength in the good news of Jesus’ victory over sin and death and faithfully proclaim his Lordship in the face of adversity;

We pray to the Father, Hear our prayer.

That the Father would raise up his church to be Jesus’ presence in the world to protect and restore human dignity, and pro- vide for those who lack employment, food, or shelter;

We pray to the Father, Hear our prayer.

That by his power war, disease, and famine may cease throughout all the world;

We pray to the Father, Hear our prayer.

That he may reveal the light of his restoring presence to the addicted, the mentally ill, the sick, the weak and the dying to comfort, deliver, and strengthen them;

We pray to the Father, Hear our prayer.

That, according to his promises, all who have died in the faith of the resurrection may be raised on the last day;

We pray to the Father, Hear our prayer.

That he may send the fire of the Holy Spirit upon his people, so that we may bear fearless and faithful witness to his resurrection;

We pray to the Father, Hear our prayer.

Celebrant prays: Heavenly Father, you have delivered us from the power of darkness and brought us into the Kingdom of your Son: grant that, as his death has recalled us to life, so his continual presence in us may raise us to the eternal joy of knowing you, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION OF SIN The People kneel or sit as able. Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God. Silence

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Priest stands and says

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincere- ly repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. MATTHEW 11:28

God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. JOHN 3:16T

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 TIMOTHY 1:15

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 JOHN 2:1-2T

And of your own have we given you. 1 CHRONICLES 29:11, 14

THE SURSUM CORDA

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Here a Proper Preface is said

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

THE SANCTUS

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full, O Lord, full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

+Blessed is he who comes in the Name, the Name of the Lord. Blessed is he who comes in the Name, the Name of the Lord.

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son Jesus Christ into the world for our salvation.

By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the Cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved.

By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he as- cended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it,* and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body, which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Word and Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. + Sanctify us also, that we may worthily receive this holy Sacrament, and be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us and we in him. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us with all your saints into the joy of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespases, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into tempation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE FRACTION

A period of silence is kept.

Alleluia. Christ our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed, once for all upon the Cross. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. THE PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS

We do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. Apart from your grace we are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table; but you are the same Lord who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.
