Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology, number 31, 139 pages, 38 figures, 8 plates, 34 tables, 1977.—Homogeneous Thalassia beds in back-reef flat (less than 1 m) and Discovery Bay (about 3 m) were sampled for 12 successive months in Jamaica, West Indies. Living foraminifera were enumerated in each of four monthly replicates consisting of 20 ml of sediment. At the sampling times, water temperature, sediment temperature, salinity, oxygen saturation, water pH, sedi­ ment pH, sediment median, sediment sorting, turbidity, particulate organic carbon, Thalassia weight, and weight percent silt plus clay were measured. In all, 18,644 individuals belonging to 143 species were picked, sorted, and identified. The back-reef flat habitat contained 7,745 individuals belonging to 115 species, while the Discovery Bay contained 10,899 individuals belonging to 117 species. Fisher's log-series fits the distribution of species abundances at both habitats well. The number of species, information function, and equitability are usually greater at Discovery Bay for individual 20 ml samples. A general linear model consisting of parameters for station differences, overall periodicity, interaction of station differences and overall periodicity, and environ­ mental variables was constructed. The densities of the 19 most abundant species were statistically analyzed individually (univariate) and simultaneously (multi­ variate). Univariate analyses indicate six species have significant station differences (95% level) and seven exhibit periodicity. The environmental variables are not significant for any of the species. Multivariate analyses indicate a significant difference between stations and an overall periodicity. As in the univariate analyses, environmental variables are not significant. The results suggest that in tropical habitats changes in species densities are regulated biotically. The new species Ammonia jacksoni, Elphidium norvangi, Fissurina goreaui, Discorbinella minuta, Glabratella altispira, and G. compressa are described. Taxonomic remarks are presented for most of the species. Abstract This is the first report of long-distance transoceanic dispersal of coastal, shallow-water benthic foraminifera by ocean rafting, documenting survival and reproduction for up to four years. Fouling was sampled on rafted items (set adrift by the Tohoku tsunami that struck northeastern Honshu in March 2011) landing in North America and the Hawaiian Islands. Seventeen species of shallow-water benthic foraminifera were recovered from these debris objects. Eleven species are regarded as having been acquired in Japan, while two additional species (Planogypsina squamiformis (Chapman, 1901) and Homotrema rubra (Lamarck, 1816)) were obtained in the Indo-Pacific as those objects drifted into shallow tropical waters before turning north and east to North America.

Its taxonomic position, phylogeny, morphology, wall structure, and compo- sition have been debated for a long time. Based on abundant, well-preserved material from the Danian of the Kambühel Formation in the Northern Calcareous Alps, Austria, we identify elements in the here emended species Stomatorbina binkhorsti which support a strong affinity to the order Textulariida, within the genus Stomatorbina Dorreen, 1948. Usually regarded as free (non-fixing), S. binkhorsti is here illustrated attached to small bioclasts in high-energy carbonate settings. The attached specimens are juvenile forms with a wall covered by massive hyaline deposits. This observation suggests that secondary lamellar parts added to the wall may have served for stabilisation or fixation to the substrate. Kaminski ABSTRACT This study describes a total of 95 calcareous benthic foraminiferal taxa from the Pliocene–Pleistocene recovered from IODP Hole U1341B in the southern Bering Sea with illustrations produced with an optical microscope and SEM. The benthic foramin- iferal assemblages are mostly dominated by calcareous taxa, and poorly diversified agglutinated forms are rare or often absent, comprising only minor components. Elon- gate, tapered, and/or flattened planispiral infaunal morphotypes are common or domi- nate the assemblages reflecting the persistent high-productivity and hypoxic conditions in the deep Bering Sea. Asterorotalia trispinosa, A. multispinosa, A. dentata, Ammonia beccarii, A. tepida, Miliammina fusca, Quinqueloculina seminulum, Trochammina inflata, Ammobaculites agglutinans, Elphidium hispidulum, and E. crispum were found to be the most abundant foraminifera recorded from different study sites during different seasons. Glenn 2 Abstract: Planulina ornata (d'Orbigny), a coarsely perforate species of forami­ nifera having a low trochospiral test, was recovered attached to phosphatic hardgrounds from the lower oxygen-minimum zone off Peru. Above the base of individual pores are calcified, perforate sieve plates, the largest so far described. Structure of the pores suggests a possible association with mitochondria and respiratory function. These large pores may facilitate extraction of the severely limited amount of oxygen from the ambient bottom waters at that locale.
