Vintage Cameras in a Digital Age Vintage Cameras in a Digital Age Amanda Everard hat is to become of the Wclassic 35mm film camera? As with anything, it’s out with the old and in with the new. We are living in an age where everything is digitized: Our photos (many taken with the camera in our smartphones), our movies - even our music. Where does this sort of modernization leave the market for vintage analog cameras? And are they at all collectible? Yes and no. In the collectible camera market, there are two types of buyers: The user and the collector, although sometimes they are one and the same. The user tends to fall into one of two camps: young and artsy or an older, film diehard. The artsy user enjoys employing the aesthetic quality of a vintage camera and lens. John Botte, a New York City police detective and lifelong photographer, grabbed his Leica M6 on Sept. 11, 2001 when he was asked by the Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik to follow him and take documentary shots of the devastation on that day and the days following. A digital camera would have been quicker, but Botte believed he wouldn’t have captured the same sense of emotion that he was able to translate into his photographs using a Leica M6 rangefinder film camera. The black and white photographs are some of the best known images from Sept. 11th and were later published in a book titled Aftermath. FAQ LEICA SF 58 Status April 2009 System compatibility – Is it possible to use the LEICA SF 58 flash unit with all Leica system cameras? Compatible in TTL flash mode with: • M-System: LEICA M6 TTL, LEICA M7, LEICA M8, LEICA M8.2 • R-System: LEICA R8, LEICA R9 (analog) • S-System: LEICA S2 Compatible in automatic or manual flash mode with all Leica System Cameras with hot shoe and x- contact Why using a secondary reflector? The LEICA SF 58 is ideal for indirect lighting due to its high flash guide number (max. 58 at ISO100/21°). The secondary reflector retains a bright illumination, creates highlights, lightens up shadows, and delivers vivid colors. White balance adjustment The LEICA SF 58 has a color temperature of 5600K. Best photographic results are achieved by a camera white balance setting of “automatic” or “flash”. What kinds of batteries are recommended? Rechargeable batteries: • NiCd (1,2V), NiMH (1,2V) Batteries: • Lithium (1,5V), Alkaline-Manganese (1,5V) Why the battery symbol is not displayed constanty? The battery symbol is meant as a capacity warning and therefore only appears when the battery capacity will end soon. Since our introduction of the combined viewfinder/rangefinder principle in 1954, countless photojournalists and photographic artists have reshaped and redefined our views of the world with their responsive, silent, and discreet Leica M cameras. This is because rangefinder cameras are ideal for capturing vital and authentic images taken from real life, a fact that holds true to the present day. With their intense concentration solely on essential functions and timelessly purist design, the Leica M7 and MP cameras carry forth the noble heritage of their predecessors. What is more, they represent the crowning glory of classical Leica M photography.

Press information Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. ‘LHSA’: Special edition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ‘The International Leica Society’ (LHSA) Wetzlar, 30 November 2017. For the past 50 years, ‘The International Leica Society’ (LHSA) has dedicated itself to research, the history of Leica and the use of the company’s products. The beginning of the celebration of the 50th anniversary in 2018 will be marked by the launch of a special edition of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. produced especially for the occasion. The appearance of the lens is reminiscent of the Summicron 50 mm f/2 from 1954. The special edition thus unites the outstanding imaging performance of the current lens – which was the first to be able to fully exploit the contrast and resolution offered by modern digital cameras – with the look of the nineteen-fifties. Depending on the choice of colour of the ‘LHSA’ special edition, the outer brass elements of the lens are finished either in black paint or in silver chrome. This also applies to the separate lens hood in the style of the nineteen-fifties that is also made of brass. While the engravings of the distance scale in feet are picked out in red on both versions, the other engravings vary in colour depending on the version of the lens selected: these are in white on the black paint version and black in the case of the silver chrome option. The special serial number is engraved on the aperture ring and is picked out in black on the silver chrome version and is not coloured on the black paint lens.

6 VIEWFINDER · VOLUME 50, ISSUE 3 LHSA SPECIAL EDITIONS marks the 50th anniversary of the 2018 LHSA, and to commemorate this mile- stone, a new LHSA Special Edition model has been created. I have been working with Stefan Daniel and the team at Leica Camera AG for almost two years on this project. Originally, a Special Edition set consisting of a camera and lens was envisioned, but the introduction of the new Leica M10 last January changed that plan. Hopefully we will have something in the way of a Special Edition camera next year. We decided to continue on with the lens part of the project, and here is the result of the latest collaboration of the LHSA and Leica. I had worked with Stefan Daniel on the past three previous Special Editions for the LHSA. The first of these was the Black Paint M6. Leica had abandoned the black paint cameras almost thirty years before with the last model produced in this finish being the M4. The black paint M cameras are highly prized by aficionados, especially those cameras that have seen a lot of use with the subsequent “brassing” taking place. These cameras take on a unique patina, and their appearance tells the story of a well-used work-horse in the hands of a serious photographer. The M6 Black Paint camera was the result of many discussions between me, Tom Abrahamsson and Leica Germany to bring back their black paint M cameras. It took quite a bit of effort to overcome the reluctance of Leica to do such a camera.
