Wesleyan Worship and the Means of Grace
WESLEYAN WORSHIP AND THE MEANS OF GRACE Robert W. Gribben The first of three keynote addresses given at the 7th Australasian Centre for Wesleyan Research Conference, Brisbane 12-13 August 2016 This article explores the question, ‘What is Wesleyan worship?’ by investigating John Wesley’s use of the means of grace and of hymn singing. The role of hymns as a valuable mode of teaching doctrine is highlighted. The liturgical minimalism of nineteenth-century Methodism and the impact of revivalism are identified as contributing causes of the loss of Wesley’s worship practices among Methodists. ____________________________________________________ Introduction I had better begin by defining my terms. My title was not ‘Methodist worship’, though these lectures will be very brief if Methodism is not included! I do, however, want to keep Mr Wesley - as his disciples still call John - as my plumbline. As I was preparing for this weekend, I was also reading - I am embarrassed to say, for the first time - David Hempton’s ground-breaking study, Methodism, Empire of the Spirit.1 It is a breathtaking survey and reframing of the Methodist movement, and perhaps the first which adequately embraces both its British and its American forms. It is also most eloquently written and a joy to read. Hempton breaks the pattern of writing about Wesley and Methodism by those who are devoted to, and defensive of the man and his movement. That, I suspect, is where I still was when I began; I hope I have learned from Hempton. One thing Hempton and others have borne in upon me in recent times, though a glance at the membership of the World Methodist Council would confirm it, is that there is no one single way of being ‘Wesleyan’. -

The thesis describes empirical, exploratory research into the nature, operant practice and understanding of superintendency which was focused on the Newcastle upon Tyne District of the Methodist Church during 2011-2012. -

Welsh Disestablishment: 'A Blessing in Disguise'
Welsh disestablishment: ‘A blessing in disguise’. David W. Jones The history of the protracted campaign to achieve Welsh disestablishment was to be characterised by a litany of broken pledges and frustrated attempts. It was also an exemplar of the ‘democratic deficit’ which has haunted Welsh politics. As Sir Henry Lewis1 declared in 1914: ‘The demand for disestablishment is a symptom of the times. It is the democracy that asks for it, not the Nonconformists. The demand is national, not denominational’.2 The Welsh Church Act in 1914 represented the outcome of the final, desperate scramble to cross the legislative line, oozing political compromise and equivocation in its wake. Even then, it would not have taken place without the fortuitous occurrence of constitutional change created by the Parliament Act 1911. This removed the obstacle of veto by the House of Lords, but still allowed for statutory delay. Lord Rosebery, the prime minister, had warned a Liberal meeting in Cardiff in 1895 that the Welsh demand for disestablishment faced a harsh democratic reality, in that: ‘it is hard for the representatives of the other 37 millions of population which are comprised in the United Kingdom to give first and the foremost place to a measure which affects only a million and a half’.3 But in case his audience were insufficiently disheartened by his homily, he added that there was: ‘another and more permanent barrier which opposes itself to your wishes in respect to Welsh Disestablishment’, being the intransigence of the House of Lords.4 The legislative delay which the Lords could invoke meant that the Welsh Church Bill was introduced to parliament on 23 April 1912, but it was not to be enacted until 18 September 1914. -

CHAPTER 2 Diversity and Co-operation Dissent traced its origins back to the seventeenth century. During the Commonwealth Presbyterianism had triumphed. The Church of England had been re-organised on Presbyterian lines: bishops had been abolished; all ministers were treated as equal. In 1662, following the restoration of Charles II to the throne and bishops to the church, those ministers who could not accept the new dispensation were ejected from their posts. Many gathered congregations outside the Church of England; and most were Presbyterians. During the eighteenth century their successors, swayed by the influences of the Age of Reason, gradually abandoned Trinitarian orthodoxy. By the early nineteenth century many of these ‘rational Dissenters’ were prepared to call themselves Unitarians.1 Although their origins were mainly Presbyterian, they differed totally from the Presbyterians of the nineteenth century—essentially Scottish immigrants who brought their orthodox religion to the major cities, together with Northumberland, and who in 1851 possessed 160 places of worship and 0.2% of the population.2 The Unitarians were of comparable strength,SAMPLE with 229 chapels and 0.2%, but were spread rather more evenly over the country. Their city centre causes, such as High Pavement in Nottingham or Mill Hill in Leeds, were dominated by prosperous business and professional families with a powerful civic spirit whose Dissent was usually hereditary. Yet a wide social range was to be found amongst them. In Lancashire a rationalist schism from Methodism had brought over a substantial working-class membership.3 There was a steady 1 R. K. CHAPTER IX. THE GIRLS' GRAMMAR SCHOOL. first of the old trusts dealt with by the commissioners under Mr. Forster's Endowed Schools Act of r87o, was the Free Grammar School of Charles II. at Bradford. In the scheme drawn up by the commissioners for the management of the boys' school, two of the clauses run as follows :-"This foundation shall consist of two branches, one for the education of boys, and the other for the education of girls." "From and after the date of this scheme, or within three years from such elate, the governors shall appropriate the annual sum of £zoo, and on the determination or failure of the pension hereafter contem plated for the present schoolmaster or that assigned to the late usher, the further sum of £so, for the establishment and maintenance of a girls' school, and such school shall be organised, supported, and managed in accordance with directions to be hereafter set forth in a supplementary scheme." The supplementary scheme here alluded to was drafted, after careful consideration, by the committee of the Ladies' Educational Association ; and it is mainly to this committee that Bradford is indebted for the Girls' Grammar School. It was felt, how ever, that the endowment allotted to the girls by the Commission was insufficient for the establishment of a first-grade school, and therefore the ladies and gentlemen most interested in the movement raised subscriptions to the amount of £sooo, through the generosity of the leading men of Bradford, notably Sir Titus Salt, Bart., Henry Brown, Esq. , and Isaac Holden, Esq. -

Harley Introduction I worshipped everything that bore the name of Methodist. To me there was one God, and Wesley was his prophet. I had devoured the story of his life. No human compositions seemed to me to be comparable to his writings, and to the hymns of his brother Charles, and all that was wanted, in my estimation, for the salvation of the world, was the faithful carrying out into practice of the letter and the spirit of his instructions.1 So said the young William Booth. Even though Booth's subsequent writings make scant reference to Wesley and things Methodist, these words, uttered when twenty years old, find an echo in all Booth did in his subsequent ministry. Salvationist historians have called the early Salvation Army "old Time Methodism" and "a derivation of Methodism". The purpose of this paper is to ask if indeed there is such a relationship between Methodism and the Salvation Army. At the outset a difficulty is acknowledged. The younger movement has developed a strikingly distinctive identity, polity and ethos. These tend to make Salvation- ists feel self-contained rather than in continuity with a larger, older movement. It can be argued that in a significant number of instances these 'distinctives' represent the influence of the parent body. 1 F. A REPORT ON CHURCH, STATE AND ESTABLISHMENT Received by the Methodist Conference of 2004 SUMMARY OF CONTENTS Introduction (paragraphs 1-10) - an explanation of the background to the report. Beginning with stories (11-22) - examples and stories that are told, from the past and the present, which have a bearing on the subject being discussed. Using stories and experiences (23-29) - initial reflection on how such examples and stories help to shape what we believe about ‘establishment’. Establishment (30-52) - detailed discussion of what the establishment of the Church of England entails at present, concluding with a brief comparison with other situations in the United Kingdom and beyond. Biblical material (53-70) - exploration of biblical material, particularly in the Old Testament, which underpinned discussions of the establishment of the Church of England as it was shaped in earlier centuries. Other biblical texts are also explored, more briefly. Theological material (71-82) - as with the biblical section, an exploration of theological discussions which underpinned early discussions of the establishment of the Church of England, with reflection on how the theological discussions shifted in subsequent centuries. Methodist historical background (83-88) - brief exploration of how the debates on establishment affected, or were discussed in, Methodism, largely before the 20th century. Reflections (89-109) - the drawing out of important strands and implications from the previous material in the report, focusing on such areas as mission and unity and the variety of possible models of Church/state relationships. Conclusions and recommendations (110-119) - recommendations for discussion and action for the British Methodist Church. Resolutions Appendix - a summary of previous Methodist reports on areas related to the subject of establishment, particularly on political responsibility. -

ALAN ROSE, B.A. Volume XLIII December 1982 THE MANTLE OF ELIJAH Nineteenth-century Primitive Methodism and Twentieth-century Pentecostalism [This article is based on a lecture delivered to the Lincolnshire Methodist History Society at Sleaford on IOth October 1980. Many of the references are to places and events in Lincolnshire, but the author has little reason to believe that Primitive Methodism in Lincolnshire was so unique as to render these references useless to readers in other parts of Britain.] y concern in this article (hence its title) is to pose the ques tion: Has the spirit of nineteenth-century Primitive Method Mism come to rest on twentieth-century Pentecostalism? Not that one would want to be suspected of suggesting that Primitive Methodism has been taken up by a whirlwind into heaven! But it does seem that something of the spirit of the one has been taken up by the other. I must go on to say that I am in no sense suggesting a theological comparison. In some ways the two movements seem quite close in their theological bases, but that is not the point of the comparison I wish to make. Clearly their particular beliefs about the Holy Spirit lead Pentecostalists to assess the Spirit's gifts differ ently, giving them a dominant concern to seek and give evidence of the more spectacular gifts, notably that of speaking in tongues. This emphasis is quite different from that of Primitive Methodism although I should be very interested to know whether Pentecostal type manifestations accompanied early Primitive Methodism. -
Atlantis and Cargate
Atlantis and Cargate John Pritchard The Atlantis Press and the Cargate Press were established by WMMS in the 1920s. Atlantis published for overseas consumption and Cargate for a home readership. The Appendices list all the books published under the Atlantis and Cargate imprints which I have been able to identify. I cannot be sure that either list is exhaustive.1 Atlantis The WMMS General Committee in May 1922 minuted: “It is proposed to supply Christian Literature to West Africa, and to ask Conference to appoint the Revd W T Balmer MA BD2 in this connection, to work under the direction of the Committee, the cost of stipend and rent to be borne for the first year by an anonymous friend. The Committee agreed.”3 William Turnbull Balmer (1866-1928) entered the Wesleyan ministry in 1899). He was a missionary in several places in West Africa, a teacher, a linguist and a writer. Revered as a wise and sympathetic headmaster in Freetown and Cape Coast, he later set up co-operative ministerial training with the Anglican CMS at Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone. He learned several African languages and his last assignment was in Cote d’Ivoire where, in his sixties, he embarked on the Adjukru tongue, helping to refine a script and to translate Mark’s Gospel. This was after he had been compelled by ill health to return to England, and subsequently been set apart for literature work; he died shortly after his brief spell in Cote d’Ivoire. The grandly-named ‘West Africa Literature Society’ thus came into being in 1922 and by 1923 English language materials for West African primary schools began to appear under the Atlantis imprint. -

W. Bebbington Professor of History, University of Stirling The catalogue that follows contains biographical data on the Unitarians who sat in the House of Commons during the nineteenth century. The main list, which includes ninety-seven MPs, is the body of evidence on which the paper on „Unitarian Members of Parliament in the Nineteenth Century‟ is based. The paper discusses the difficulty of identifying who should be treated as a Unitarian, the criterion chosen being that the individual appears to have been a practising adherent of the denomination at the time of his service in parliament. A supplementary list of supposed Unitarian MPs, which follows the main list, includes those who have sometimes been identified as Unitarians but who by this criterion were not and some who may have been affiliated to the denomination but who were probably not. The borderline is less sharp than might be wished, and, when further research has been done, a few in each list may need to be transferred to the other. Each entry contains information in roughly the same order. After the name appear the dates of birth and death and the period as an MP. Then a paragraph contains general biographical details drawn from the sources indicated at the end of the entry. A further paragraph discusses religious affiliation and activities. Unattributed quotations with dates are from Dod’s Parliamentary Companion, as presented in Who’s Who of British Members of Parliament.
