SUMMARY This report informs members of Keighley’s first Big 10K event. 2. BACKGROUND 2.1 On Sunday March 16th 2008 a broad cross section of Keighley Community took part in the inaugural event of a new type of 10K run on a multi-terrain route deliberately chosen to connect parks and communities in Keighley via the network of paths, backroads, ginnels and through routes that are characteristic of the town of Keighley. 2.2 The route primarily used “walkway” routes that have been established via the SportKeighley “walkways” initiative. This forms part of the wider “Keighley Integrated” or “Ki” initiative that also includes cycling (“cyKle”) and skating (“sKate”). 2.3 All of the initiatives, like the BIGK 10K event itself, use the “Red K” designation that is designed to promote all that is good about Keighley. 2.4 The 16th March date coincided with the national Sport Relief Mile initiative and thus a number of events were also planned around this. These included mile events at Greenhead Track in the week leading up to the BIGK 10K and also mile events on the day at Victoria Park, Lund Park and Highfield. These were designed to start just as the 10K runners arrived at the location. 2.5 The day was also the launch of the Community Cougar Foundation at Cougar Park on the same afternoon, with entrants to the 10K given concessionary tickets to the Cougars match against Workington. 2.5 All finishers were offered a free swim at Keighley Leisure Centre. Of the 322 finishers, 51% were male and 49% were female, 7% were under 20 (the youngest was 8 years old!) and 19% were over 50. The bulk of the field (60%) was an even split of males and females between the ages of 30 and 50. Competitors were from all backgrounds and abilities: the fastest time was from Will Smith of Keighley & Craven AC who got round in 34mins 13 secs whilst the walkers at the back of the field completed the course in a more leisurely 2hrs 15mins 52secs. Many wore fancy dress and the vast majority were actively raising in excess of £10,000 for Manorlands. Over 150 participants (mainly under 16) took part in the Sport Relief Mile event in Victoria Park, and there were many from a similar age group who took part in the mile events at Lund Park and at Highfield. 3. Over 320 starters toed the line in Victoria Park on Sunday morning for the inaugural Keighley BIGK 10K in aid of the Sue Ryder Care Centre at Manorlands in Oxenhope The overnight rain had cleared to leave a bright but chilly day and the runners and walkers were glad to be set on their way by the Mayor of Keighley Cllr Brian Hudson, completing a lap of the park before setting out on the challenging multi-terrain route linking all four main parks in Keighley. Over sixty marshals and helpers were distributed around the course to help and encourage the participants, from a range of organisations including Keighley & Craven Athletic Club, Worth Valley Young Farmers, Manorlands, Bradford & Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust, Lund Park Resident’s Association, Bangladeshi Association, Keighley Voluntary Services, Keighley Town Council, Highfield Resident’s Association, Victoria School, Highfield Centre, Keighley Park Lane College, Keighley Area Sports Association, Oakbank Sports College, Leeds Metropolitan University, Keighley Cougars, Keighley Police and many more. There was a tremendous atmosphere around the course, with additional events taking place at Lund Park and at Highfield. The route had been cleared, tidied and repaired by Bradford Council and the Police and Raynet operated a rolling road closure programme to allow the faster runners unimpeded progress around the challenging ten kilometre course. Meanwhile in Victoria Park the Sport Relief BIGK Mile event with over 150 participants got underway, with many youngsters completing three laps of the park route to complete their mile challenge. Hardier souls did nine or even eighteen laps to complete three or six mile challenges respectively. Mile challenges in Lund Park and at Highfield also took place at the same time, coinciding with the 10K participants passing through. Within minutes of the mile start at Victoria Park, Keighley & Craven’s Willy Smith appeared to complete the final loop of the BIGK 10K, finishing the event well clear in an excellent 34 minutes 13 seconds. He was followed by clubmates Adrian “Zip” Jones and Rob Shaw. Will’s partner Helen Glover completed a great day for the pair when she came in as first lady home in 6th place overall in 40 minutes 18 seconds. Helen helped Keighley & Craven complete a clean sweep in the ladies’ event too, with Elizabeth Tomes and Clare Stevens following up in second and third. Full results will be on the sportKeighley website www.sportkeighley.com. 21 Report to the Keighley Area Committee All finishers received a BIGK T-shirt (courtesy of sponsors Bradford & Bingley) and a bottle of specially labelled “BIGK 10K” water from Royal Spring and Bradford & Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust. It was a bumper day for local charity, with the fantastic sponsorship from Bradford and Bingley, the Keighley News, Bradford & Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust, Keighley Area Committee, Keighley Town Council, Royal Spring Mineral Water, Sainsburys, the Bradford District Faiths Forum, Keighley Park Lane College and FWB Product Services) enabled all proceeds from entry fees and individual run sponsorship to go straight to Manorlands. The Pulse of West Yorkshire road show helped to create the great atmosphere in the park that spilled over to Cougar Park in the afternoon for the public launch of the Community Cougar Foundation. The school’s banner competition was won by Long Lee Primary School against some excellent competition from local schools. The sun came out and shone on the Cougars as a last minute try saw them complete an excellent victory over Workington! A great K day all round! The organisers wish to thank everyone who helped out in such a positive way to make the day such a success!!
