The Strikers dominated the match but could not get the ball in the back of the net due to the outstanding performance by Indy goalkeeper Jon Busch. IN FINE FORM Heading into Sunday’s encounter with FC Edmonton, Fort Lauderdale had lost just once over the last 10 matches. Despite creating more opportunities, maintaining more possession and tallying more shots on goal in the match on Sunday, the Strikers fell to the one chance the Eddies capitalized on. INVINCIBLE INDY Indy Eleven are Spring Season Champions for the first time in club history. Overcoming great odds in their final match, Indy defeated the Carolina RailHawks 41 to steal the crown from the New York Cosmos. The Strikers could have snatched the title from Indy with an improbable win over FC Edmonton in their Spring Season finale a day later, but a 21 defeat put an end to any title hopes. The “Boys in Blue” have maintained their 460 unbeaten streak from the Spring Season with one win and a draw to open the Fall. FIXTURE CONGESTION The Strikers don’t have much time to rest over the next few matches, as they will be on the road or in the air since their second match of the season in Edmonton. From Edmonton, the Red & Gold travel to Indy, make a quick trip home to play Carolina, then fly out again to face Chicago Fire on Wednesday in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals, then finally to Minnesota: a total of 5 matches in just 14 days. ARGUEZ AND PAULO JR. DEBUT (AGAIN) Recent additions Bryan Arguez and Paulo Jr. made their first appearances of the season in the 10 defeat to FC Edmonton on Sunday. Arguez made 24 appearances for the Strikers in 2011, helping the Strikers reach the NASL Championship Series. Paulo Jr., in his third stint with the club, suited up for Fort Lauderdale on loan from Real Salt Lake in 2012, and again in 2013. Prior to Sunday, he played 15 matches for the Strikers, scoring one goal and two assists. THE BOSS Gale “The Boss” Agbossoumonde is the only player on the Strikers roster to play all available minutes across league and Open Cup play this season. Agbossoumonde opened his goalscoring account last Saturday against Miami FC. MOVING ON IN THE OPEN CUP The Fort Lauderdale Strikers reached the Quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup the only nonMLS side to do so this edition following a thrilling 21 road victory over Orlando City SC. For the third Open Cup game in a row, the Strikers took the match to extra time. The match looked destined for penalty kicks, before Strikers left back PC struck a winner in the final minute. The Strikers travel to face Chicago Fire in the Quarterfinals on July 20. SPRING SEASON TURNAROUND After a slow start to the Spring Season, the Strikers kicked it into gear and finished the Spring Season stronger than ever. Fort Lauderdale went unbeaten in five league contests at the end of the season and had a chance to compete for the NASL title. With goalkeeper Diego Restrepo holding it down in goal, and the consistency in the lineup in front of him, the form of the team improved dramatically. CLUB CONNECTION Strikers midfielder Victor Pineda spent the past two seasons in Indy, making 37 appearances and scoring 5 goals.
