The Politics of Roman Memory in the Age of Justinian DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Marion Woodrow Kruse, III Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Anthony Kaldellis, Advisor; Benjamin Acosta-Hughes; Nathan Rosenstein Copyright by Marion Woodrow Kruse, III 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the use of Roman historical memory from the late fifth century through the middle of the sixth century AD. The collapse of Roman government in the western Roman empire in the late fifth century inspired a crisis of identity and political messaging in the eastern Roman empire of the same period. I argue that the Romans of the eastern empire, in particular those who lived in Constantinople and worked in or around the imperial administration, responded to the challenge posed by the loss of Rome by rewriting the history of the Roman empire. The new historical narratives that arose during this period were initially concerned with Roman identity and fixated on urban space (in particular the cities of Rome and Constantinople) and Roman mythistory. By the sixth century, however, the debate over Roman history had begun to infuse all levels of Roman political discourse and became a major component of the emperor Justinian’s imperial messaging and propaganda, especially in his Novels. The imperial history proposed by the Novels was aggressivley challenged by other writers of the period, creating a clear historical and political conflict over the role and import of Roman history as a model or justification for Roman politics in the sixth century. -
The Fire of 884/1479 at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and an Account of Its Restoration
DORIS BEHRENS-ABOUSEIF SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL AND AFRICAN STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF LONDON The Fire of 884/1479 at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and an Account of Its Restoration Among the series of fires that are reported to have hit the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus during its pre-modern history, the fire of 884/1479 is so far the least known.1 The well-known sources for this period, such as the contemporary Cairene chronicles of Ibn Iya≠s and al-S˛ayraf|, do not mention it; nor does al-Sakha≠w| refer to the subsequent substantial restoration of the Umayyad Mosque in his long list of Qa≠ytba≠y's construction and renovation works.2 The Syrian historian Ibn T˛u≠lu≠n (880–953/1476–1546), whose chronicle starts in 884, the same year when the fire broke out, when he was still a child, refers only briefly to the restoration works that followed this fire.3 In his biographical dictionary of the viceroys of Damascus, however, he does not include any reference to this fire under the entry of Qa≠ns˝u≠h al-Yah˝a≠w|, the viceroy in charge at that time.4 However, a detailed description of the catastrophe and the following restoration works can be found in the chronicle H˛awa≠dith al-Zama≠n wa-Wafaya≠t al-Shuyu≠kh wa-al-Aqra≠n by the Damascene historian Ah˝mad ibn Muh˝ammad ibn ‘Umar al- Middle East Documentation Center. ABSTRACT Work at Barāqish/Yathill in 2005-06 has produced sequences encompassing the Sabaean (13th-6th centuries BC) and Minaean/Arab (c. 550 BC-AD 1) occupa- tions. Abundant animal remains were retrieved and contexts of use and discard were obtained. Camels and donkeys are studied together as pack animals, the camel being the domestic dromedary. Their zooarchaeological and contextual study at Yathill is justified from this city’s location on the famous frankincense caravan route of the 1st millennium BC. An extramural stratigraphic sequence documenting the relationships between the city and the adjoining plain from c. 820 BC to the Islamic era was investigated to the northwest of the Minaean KEY WORDS wall. Domestic camels were present by 800 BC, the earliest well-documented Dromedary (Camelus occurrence in Yemen; wild dromedary herds were still in the area during the dromedarius), Camelus sp. wild, 7th century and perhaps later. The study of the archaeological context links donkey (Equus asinus), these Sabaean-age camels to campsites possibly formed by non-residents. This caravan trade, archaeological indicators pattern greatly developed during the Minaean period, with trade-jar handling of ‘caravan’ activity, posts outside the walled city and frequent stationing of camels and donkeys on ‘frankincense route’ in the upper talus. -

Pre-Islamic Arabia The Nomadic Tribes of Arabia The nomadic pastoralist Bedouin tribes inhabited the Arabian Peninsula before the rise of Islam around 700 CE. Julian Raby, the director of the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery (FSG), has given OP&A the opportunity to study an array of exhibitions to learn more about the interests, needs, and perceptions of the public. Although the methods of conducting these studies vary, understanding visitors’ reactions to exhibitions, attempting to determine what exhibi- tions mean to them, and ultimately changing a museum’s relationships with its audiences are always challenging. Caravan Kingdoms: Yemen and the Ancient Incense Trade sought to make connections with and build bridges between visitors and impressive objects from a lost civilization. Th e OP&A study has resulted in deeper understanding of fi rst-time visitors as well as repeat visitors, and illustrated what a single exhibition can do: provide aesthetic plea- sure, increase knowledge, place objects in their cultural context, lead to discoveries, and stimulate interest. Plumbing these results could not have occurred without the assistance of FSG staff members Th eresa Esterlund, manager of in-gallery interpretation, as well as Ann Gunter, curator of the exhibition, and Massumeh Farhad, chief curator at FSG. -

Republic of Yemen Ministry of Public Health and Population Central Statistical Organization Report on the Nutritional Situation and Mortality Survey Al Jawf Governorate, Yemen From 19 to 25 April 2018 1 Acknowledgment The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen, represented by the Public Health and Population Office in the Al Jawf governorate and in cooperation with the UNICEF country office in Yemen and the UNICEF branch in Sana’a, acknowledges the contribution of different stakeholders in this survey. The UNICEF country office in Yemen provided technical support, using the SMART methodology, while the survey manager and his assistants from the Ministry of Public Health and Population and the Public Health and Population Offices in Amran and Taiz were also relied on. The surveyors and team heads were provided by the Public Health and Population Office in the Al Jawf governorate. The data entry team was provided by the Public Health and Population Office in Amran and the Nutrition Department in the Ministry. The survey protocol was prepared, and other changes were made to it, through cooperation between the Ministry of Public Health and Population and the Central Statistical Organization, with technical support from UNICEF. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development provided UNICEF with technical assistance, especially with regards to daily quality checks, data analysis, and report writing. The Building Foundation for Development provided technical and logistical support through extensive coordination with the local authorities in the Al Jawf governorate, as well as through their choice of the survey team and providing extensive training for them. The Building Foundation for Development was also responsible for regular follow-up with the survey teams out in the field and providing logistical and technical support for these teams, as well as preparing the initial draft of the survey report. -

Arabia before Islam Richard N. Frye Just as trade had been the dominant feature of Arabia in an earlier period so now religion became the leitmotif of the era under discussion. Not that trade lost its importance, but after the fall of the Roman Empire the demand for luxury goods from the east subsided. Also there was not the great quantity of gold available to pay for the imports, and India still sought gold in payment for spices. It was not until the sixth century when the Byzantine and Sasanian Empires had become stabilized that new demands for eastern luxuries became so important that trade in silk, spices and perfumes had a great influence on the politics of the time. But common people were more concerned with religion. The written sources which have survived are almost exclusively religious, in contrast to the earlier period where secular documents are available. From the third century of our era religion usurped all other activities in the concerns of people. This is reflected not only in writings but in art and architecture and indeed in every aspect of life. The period from the fourth to the eighth century could be called the age of religions. Another difference between the earlier and later periods of the history of Arabia is that earlier the cultural influence, as well as the migrations of tribes, went from south to north, for south Arabian civilization was more advanced than the north. But from the fourth to the eighth century of our era the reverse obtains; south Arabian tribes underwent the influence of north Arabia. -
