British Ports Association BPA Member Guide British Ports Association Created in 1992, the British Ports Association represents the interests of its 100 full members, and numerous associate members, to the UK and devolved Governments, the EU and national and international bodies. As our membership comprises many ports, terminal operators and port facilities, all of varying size, location and nature, the Association is able to draw upon a wide range of experience and knowledge to represent its members’ interests. The BPA’s aims are to: - • Dedicate resources to representing a wide variety of UK port interests to government in the UK, Europe and internationally; • Provide a resource for its members on legislative and policy issues, as well as a forum for the exchange of knowledge and development of best practice; • Work towards achieving an equitable and transparent ports industry and a level playing field throughout Europe; • Promote the use of ports and shipping as an environmentally sustainable mode of transport. BPA Chairman Rodney Lunn Chief Executive, Shoreham Port Rodney joined Shoreham Port in July 2009. He has spent over 35 years in the Maritime Industry, in a variety of senior management roles, gaining experience both in the UK and Overseas. Previously with Inchcape Shipping Services, a global provider of Maritime Services, where he held both Group and Regional positions, including Group Commercial Director based in London, Regional Managing Director - Middle East based in Dubai; North America based in New York, and Europe based in London. His early career was with Oceanroutes, a weather services company, where he was the Group Marketing Manager based in Aberdeen and London. Prior to this his Maritime career started at sea with P&O as a Deck Officer, where he spent most of his time on general cargo ships. In addition to being on the Board of Shoreham Port, Rodney is also Managing Director of Sussex Port Forwarding. BPA Staff Richard Ballantyne Chief Executive Richard Ballantyne joined the Association in 2007 and became the Chief Executive and Director of the BPA in 2016. He represents the BPA to a number of industry bodies and is a member of a wide range of government stakeholder groups and European Committees. Richard has in depth expertise in ports, transport and environment policy matters as well as a wide experience of the legislative process around the UK. He sits on the European Sea Ports Organisation’s Executive Committee, the Maritime UK Board and is also a Director of Port Skills and Safety. Before joining the BPA, he spent five years at a Westminster political consultancy and was previously an MP’s researcher in the House of Commons. Email: - [email protected] BPA Staff Mark Simmonds Policy Manager Mark Simmonds joined the Association as Policy Manager in 2016 and leads on environmental and technical policy issues. He is also the Association Secretary and is a member of the BPA Council. Before joining the BPA he spent five years working for an MP in the House of Commons as a senior researcher and speechwriter, focussing on business and technology policy. Prior to that he worked in Government as a policy advisor and a Business and Systems Analyst at the Dreyfus Corporation, part of the Bank of New York Mellon in the USA. Email: - [email protected] BPA Staff Stuart Wealands Communications and Events Assistant Stuart Wealands joined the association in 2015 and assists with all the associations events and communications. He manages our online and social media presence and also oversees the BPA’s communications network, e-news circulars and all of our electronic campaigns. Stuart joined the BPA after previously working for a number of industry bodies and guilds in both the media and trade union sectors. Email: - [email protected] BPA Staff Sara Walsh Executive Assistant Sara Walsh joined the BPA in 2016 and is responsible for all the association’s administration and finances and supporting Richard Ballantyne. She also has responsibility for the organisation of the BPA’s two flagship events; the Annual Conference and the AGM Lunch. Prior to joining the BPA, Sara worked as a member of the events team at Energy Networks Association, the trade body for UK electricity and gas distribution and transmission operators. It meets four times a year and help set the direction and policy of the BPA’s work program.
