WEIRD RELIGIOUS BACKGROUNDS: LARRY NORMAN, JESUS ROCK, AND AN INTERVIEW WITH GREGORY ALAN THORNBURY Rupert Loydell Falmouth University Keywords: Christianity, Larry Norman, Jesus Rock, CCM, Religion 'Christian rock is a genre that exists to edify and make money off evangelical Christians. [...] A Christian band , on the other hand is just a band that has more than one Christian in it.' – John Jeremiah Sullivan (2012: 17-18) Although The Bloomsbury Handbook of Religion and Popular Music (Stewart and Abraham 2017) contains chapters such as Michael J. Gilmour's 'The Bible and Popular Music' (67-76) and Ibrahim Abraham and Francis Stewarts' 'Punk and Hardcore' (241- 250), there remains little informed academic consideration of the Christian music genre, especially punk and post-punk. John J. Thompson's Raised by Wolves (2000) and Mark Joseph's The Rock & Roll Rebellion (1999) offer insider histories, whilst Andrew Beaujon's Body Piercing Saved My Life (2006) is an hilarious, sceptical exploration of 'the phenomenon of Christian rock', focussed mostly on the early 2000s. Gilmour 's Call Me the Seeker: Listening to Religion in Popular Music (2005) is interested more in religious sources and themes; the nearest it gets to post-punk is Anna Kessler's consideration of Nick Cave (79-94) and J.R.C. Cousland's discussion of 'God, the Bad, and the Ugly' in the work of Nick Cave and Polly Harvey (129-157). Better, is Jay R Howard & John M. Streck's Apostle of Rock (1999), which takes a more sociological approach to what it calls 'The Splintered World of Contemporary Christian Music' and considers the tensions between ideas of ministry, entertainment, art and business for Christian musicians.

  • Portrait of an Artist
atR: I'm going through this phase where I feel like I haven't said anything meaningful or interesting or witty for several months now. I read so many interviews with artists and I listen to a lot of public radio where authors and musicians and various creative people are constantly talking about their ideas. Everyone is so articulate and colorful. I'm feeling very run-of-the-mill. ACM: We were looking back over the newsletter you send out. It's very thoughtful and introspective and mentions a little background on each of you. What do you do to entertain yourself when you go to a town to do a show... atR: Well ... , the antidote for touring, for most of us, is seeking out antiquarian and rare edition bookshops where we can fill the gaps in our libraries ... We're fairly bookish people. Bookshops are the most popular haunts, but Brian enjoys wooing nubile girls, Ric likes to ... continued on page 6 selecting bands to interview: for example Over the Rhine was requested by several subscribers for an interview. There are so many other bands and topics of interest that we want to cover, From the Editor nationally and internationally; also, we'd like to cover (and be It's June 7, 1992 and we're on time with Issue 9. Do we get some involved with) local growth in the Pacific Northwest. Thanks kind of reward for being on time? I didn't think Issue 8 would for the great ideas. We'll print another reader survey with Issue ever get done.

Mark Heard: Complete Discography Compiled by Martin Stillion and Dan Kennedy, with the able assistance of Roar Sørenson, Kyle Griffin, Miles O’Neal, Eric and Jason Townsend, Wayne Shuman, Mike Rohlinger, Doug Desmarais, Randy Layton, Jean-Daniel von Lerber, Ed Crabtree, Michael Myer, Nancy VanReece, and Christian Hancock. Album descriptions by Martin Stillion, Roar Sørenson, and Josh Jackson. 1970 Infinity Plus Three Setting Yesterday Free Independent release (LP) (1970) / Spirit Records V-1111 (LP) (1972) / Fingerprint/Silhouette Records (CD) (1998) Mark’s first recording, with a folk band he formed after his conversion to Christianity—around the time he finished high school and entered college. (Mark played with rock and R&B bands in high school, and had a rock band for a while in college in addition to Infinity Plus Three.) Mark wrote six songs; contributed guitar, bass, harmonica, and vocals; and co-produced with Doug Milheim. While this release may sound amateurish 40-plus years later, it was similar in quality to most “Jesus music” of the period, and Mark’s lyrics reveal an interest in metaphor, a capacity for introspection, and a careful choice of words. In the liner notes to Appalachian Melody, Mark recounted that not long after Setting Yesterday Free was released, “I was getting tired of the stereotypes surrounding Christian music, so I left the group and began performing solo.” It was not the last time he would make such a decision. The custom LP was reissued on Spirit Records in 1972, and a CD-R version was released in 1998. Songs: All My Trials/Life’s Ocean/You/Morning Light/Memory/Friends/Presence of the Lord/Second Best Friend/Not Alone/A Place Inside/Love The 1998 CD reissue on Fingerprint Records includes the following bonus live tracks: Washed to the Sea/Nothing Is Bothering Me/With Broken Wings/Rise from the Ruins 1973 Ron Moore Airborne Airborn Records AR-1003 (LP) (1973) / Hartsong HK 5010 (LP) (1979) “Jesus music” pioneer Ron Moore operated an independent label, Airborn Records, in Mark’s hometown of Macon, Georgia.
