P, 11 EFSPHOTOGRAPHY BY KIT NOBLE WASHINGTON POWER, COUPLE TAMERA LUZZATTO AND DAVID LEITER In the hit Netflix TV series, House ofCards, a Machiavellian politician teams up with his cold-blooded wife to create the ultimate Washington power couple—successful yet unapologetically ruthless. Far from these exaggerated televi- sion characters Francis and Claire Underwood is the real-life Washington power couple of Tamera Stanton Luzzatto and David Leiter, who call Nantucket their summer home. Both Luzzatto and Leiter had the distinction of being chief of staff to two ambitious and successful politicians in Washington: Hillary Clinton and John Kerry. Luzzatto is senior vice president at the Pew Charitable Trusts in D.C., while Leiter is an influential lobbyist at ML Strategies, a division of Boston-based Mintz Levin. Theirs is a true D.C. life replete with influential friends, a packed schedule of A-list black-tie events, and associations that go all the way up to the Oval Office. For Leiter, a native of Seekonk, Massachusetts, it all began as a volunteer in Congressman Mo Udall's 1976 presiden- tial campaign and then a position on President-Elect Jimmy Carter's Presidential Transition Team. He later served as a senior aide to U.S. Senator Wendell Ford and then campaign manager and chief of staff to Rhode Island Lieutenant Governor Richard Licht, which led to a position on Senator John Kerry's 1990 reelection campaign and ultimately to chief ofstaff in Kerry's Washington Senate office. Leiter became well-known for his affable personal style and served during a time of ascending influence of Massachusetts's then-junior senator. While distance from his former job gives him freedom of candor, Leiter's admiration for the now secretary of state is palpable. "I have never met an individual so talented in so many facets of life, from his grasp of numerous foreign languages to his athleticism, to a level of intelligence that few can grasp," he says. "Kerry to me is a vertically integrated human being." amera Luzzatto's instincts for politics began as a government major at Harvard College, where she was the first woman elected head of the Harvard Democrats and a leader at the Institute of Politics. After graduating from Har- T vard, she rose up the ranks at the office of Senator Jay Rockefeller, ultimately becoming his chief of staff and a valued confidant for fifteen years. As Luzzatto's reputation grew in Washington, she caught the attention of then-First Lady Hillary Clinton, who recruited her to become her chief of staff when she was elected senator of New York State. •,_3!"-A - Photo by Diana Walker/TIME Luzzatto became Hillary Clinton's chief of staff when Clinton was sworn into office in early Jan- uary of 2001. The senator was still the first lady until January 20, and she invited Luzzatto to join the Clintons over a final weekend at Camp David that hosted members of Congress and close friends. After learning she herself could bring a guest, Luzzatto thought of David Leiter, whom she had reconnected with at a recent Capitol Hill holi- day party. As fate would have it, this trip to Camp David would be the couple's first real date. Four months later, Leiter proposed to Luzzatto on the shores of a beach in Tom Nevers. Life has had its interruptions for Leiter and Luz- zatto, including Luzzatto overcoming two brain-tu- mor operations, from which she has fully recovered. Just eleven days before their wedding in 2001, the September 1 1 th attacks occurred, throwing them yet another curveball. New York was still in a state of shock from the attack, and after wrestling with the decision on whether to postpone their wedding, they both agreed that the best way to respond to the terrorist attacks was to show that life goes on. After the ceremony at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, in a display of proud defi- ance, guest Hillary Clinton spontaneously decided to lead all the wedding guests on a walk down 5th Avenue to the reception. While Clinton's actions did not please her frantic security detail, it made N a powerful statement to all the guests and to New York City. euizo6ow ° o (il NA5OAt hen walking through their house in the shadow of the National Cathedral, one W quickly notices photographs of the cou- ple with Washington's power elite.

MILLENNIALS AND THE FUTURE OF MAGAZINES: HOW THE GENERATION OF DIGITAL NATIVES WILL DETERMINE WHETHER PRINT MAGAZINES SURVIVE by ELIZABETH MARGARET BONNER CHRIS ROBERTS, COMMITTEE CHAIR DIANNE BRAGG, COMMITTEE CO-CHAIR MARGOT LAMME A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Journalism in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2015 Copyright Elizabeth Margaret Bonner 2015 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT In today’s rapidly evolving media ecosystem, two important narratives emerge: the demise of print publishing and the rise of the Millennial generation—the digital natives—as media consumers. In the midst of the persistent discussion that print journalism is dying in this era of digital revolution, data and literature suggest that many magazines are thriving, particularly with Millennials. This discovery, while noteworthy given its direct contradiction to the popular belief that Millennials have forsaken traditional media, is where knowledge pertaining to this phenomenon is prematurely truncated. This study seeks to contribute to a greater understanding of the motivations behind these quantitative conclusions by giving voice to Millennials’ reasons for continued magazine consumption in a way that the available data from closed-response surveys and questionnaires has not. Through a mixed-methods study grounded in uses and gratifications theory, utilizing a preliminary survey and subsequently concentrating on a qualitative design built around focus groups with Millennials (ages 18-25), this work seeks to reveal how this instrumental demographic—the industry’s audience for the years to come and the population whose lives have been most immersed in digital technologies—feels about magazines.

THESIS THE COMPLICITOUS SALUTE: SILENCING FEMALE SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN THE U.S. MILITARY Submitted by Sarah James Department of Communication Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2015 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Thomas R. Dunn Karrin Anderson Catherine Steele Copyright by Sarah James 2015 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT THE COMPLICITOUS SALUTE: SILENCING FEMALE SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN THE U.S. MILITARY Driven by growing concerns about sexual assault in the U.S. military and public questioning of current reporting procedures, this thesis examines why female military assault survivors do not come forward and report the crimes committed against them. More specifically, I argue that sexual assault in the U.S. military goes underreported and ignored due in part to the military’s culture of masculinity, silence, and complicity. To make sense of this military culture and the attendant discourse surrounding sexual assaults, I study two rhetoric texts through a critical rhetoric perspective. My first text consists of meaningful fragments of mediated public address centered on news coverage of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and her proposed legislation to reform military sexual assault: the Military Justice Improvement Act. My second text is a fictional narrative of similar military sexual assault legislation in the Netflix series House of Cards. Through my analysis, I consider my texts using a critique of domination and a critique of freedom to demonstrate how public discourse about sexual assault and its reporting challenges the hegemonic structure. In doing so, I employ an examination of critical rhetoric to expose a text’s possibility for social change.

  • House of Cards and the Perceived Advantages Over Traditional Television
Online Programming Realities: A Case Study of House of Cards and the Perceived Advantages Over Traditional Television Rebecca Hill Stockholm University JMK, Department of Media Studies Master’s Program in Media and Communications (M.A.) Master Thesis 30 HE credits Spring 2014 Supervisor: Kristina Riegert Abstract The choice of content and number of technologies that audiences view television with are increasingly expanding in the post-network era, leading those who use the medium to question its definition. In the wake of the Internet, online programming and streaming technologies, the death of television is frequently forecast. Netflix’s 2013 release of their original online production House of Cards prompted popular media and trade journals alike to declare a revolution of television that would result in a paradigm shift of current production and viewing practices. House of Cards is esteemed for its distribution method and asserted advantages over traditional television by creators and executives surrounding the show, which calls for an examination of the specific practices that are dubbed ‘innovative’, as current television production practices have been put in place for years. The aim of this thesis is to shed light on the claims surrounding the series through production and textual analysis. Second-hand sources are used to gather evidentiary claims surrounding the production, and analyzed using historical poetics analysis with Jason Mittell’s complex television definitions in order to make comparisons of particular elements of the creation, production and distribution of House of Cards. Making these areas its starting point, this inquiry provokes larger questions of the future of online television programming in general, and its role in the death of television in particular.

APRIL/MAY 2015 BY GINA SHAW Walter F. Mondale Is on the Campaign Trail to Cure Brain Disease Two personal tragedies spur the former vice president's support for aggressive brain research. Looking back, Walter F. Mondale isn't sure when the first sign of his wife Joan's illness appeared. "I realized that she had started walking more slowly, and I didn't know what that meant. I wasn't really suspicious at first; I just thought she wanted to walk more slowly," recalls the former US Vice President and 1984 presidential candidate, who also served two terms as a Minnesota senator. Vice President Walter F. Mondale with wife, Joan, at the 1980 Democratic Party Convention. DIEGO GOLDBERG/SYGMA/CORBIS; MINNESOTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY But things started to get worse. "Her walking continued to get slower, and sometimes weaker, and I could see that her face—that beautiful face—was starting to freeze up," Mondale says. "There was a long period where we weren't sure what it was. For maybe about two years, we had been going down to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester trying to figure out what was happening." Mondale will never forget the day in 2010 when he and Joan sat down with Ronald C. Petersen, MD, PhD, director of Mayo's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN), and J. Eric Ahlskog, MD, PhD, a professor of neurology at Mayo Medical School and former chair of the Mayo Clinic division of movement disorders, and learned exactly what was wrong: Joan, then in her late 70s, had Lewy body disease with parkinsonism and dementia.
