Jana Sehnálková, Ph.D. Length of the thesis: 264 572 characters. 4 Abstract This thesis examined the contemporary U.S. popular culture, specifically the Netflix series House of Cards, and the analysis was focused on the representation of the media reality portrayed in the first two seasons of the series. The credibility of given model situations or their exaggeration is examined based on thirteen research interviews with Czech and American journalists in March, April, and May 2020. The public trust in media, the influence of popular culture on mass society, specifics and ethics of investigative journalism, and broadly the representation of media in cinematography were presented in the first part. -

April 11, 2019 3:30 PM-5:00 PM Johnson Center 324 3:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. Accidentally Pioneering a Movement: How the Pioneer Players Sparked Political Reform Sami Hansen Faculty Advisor: James Al-Shamma, Ph.D. Theatre in the twenty-first century has been largely based on political and social reform, mirroring such movements as Black Lives Matter and Me Too. New topics and ideas are brought to life on various stages across the globe, as many artists challenge cultural and constitutional structures in their society. But how did protest theatre get started? As relates specifically to the feminist movement, political theatre on the topic of women’s rights can be traced back to an acting society called the Pioneer Players, which was made up of British men and women suffragettes in the early twentieth century. The passion and drive of its members contributed to its success: over the course of a decade, patrons and actors worked together to expose a rapidly changing society to a variety of genres and new ideas. In this presentation, I hope to prove that, in challenging traditional theatre, the Pioneer Players helped to pave the way for the avant garde, spur political reform, and promote uncensored theatre in Great Britain. AD Right – well, usually when I start something, it’s – first of all, it’s either going to be a one-off or it’s going to be an episode. If it’s for television and it’s going to be in episodes, usually I’m given, or we work out by mutual agreement, the number of episodes that would be best to do this kind of thing in – and when I say “we”, usually I’m working with the producer or it’s someone higher up like an executive producer. This is one of the good things about having been around for a long time; I knew her when she was a script editor. She was a very good script editor, and I suppose what I’m working round to is there’s not usually a lot of disagreement about it. If she says “I think it would make three” or “I think it would make four” or whatever it is, I usually think she’s right. Occasionally, you find that there’s a difference, but generally people will go with what I say these days. -

In the midst of the persistent discussion that print journalism is dying in this era of digital revolution, data and literature suggest that many magazines are thriving, particularly with Millennials. This discovery, while noteworthy given its direct contradiction to the popular belief that Millennials have forsaken traditional media, is where knowledge pertaining to this phenomenon is prematurely truncated. This study seeks to contribute to a greater understanding of the motivations behind these quantitative conclusions by giving voice to Millennials’ reasons for continued magazine consumption in a way that the available data from closed-response surveys and questionnaires has not. Through a mixed-methods study grounded in uses and gratifications theory, utilizing a preliminary survey and subsequently concentrating on a qualitative design built around focus groups with Millennials (ages 18-25), this work seeks to reveal how this instrumental demographic—the industry’s audience for the years to come and the population whose lives have been most immersed in digital technologies—feels about magazines. -

Dunn Karrin Anderson Catherine Steele Copyright by Sarah James 2015 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT THE COMPLICITOUS SALUTE: SILENCING FEMALE SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN THE U.S. MILITARY Driven by growing concerns about sexual assault in the U.S. military and public questioning of current reporting procedures, this thesis examines why female military assault survivors do not come forward and report the crimes committed against them. More specifically, I argue that sexual assault in the U.S. military goes underreported and ignored due in part to the military’s culture of masculinity, silence, and complicity. To make sense of this military culture and the attendant discourse surrounding sexual assaults, I study two rhetoric texts through a critical rhetoric perspective. My first text consists of meaningful fragments of mediated public address centered on news coverage of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and her proposed legislation to reform military sexual assault: the Military Justice Improvement Act. My second text is a fictional narrative of similar military sexual assault legislation in the Netflix series House of Cards. Through my analysis, I consider my texts using a critique of domination and a critique of freedom to demonstrate how public discourse about sexual assault and its reporting challenges the hegemonic structure. In doing so, I employ an examination of critical rhetoric to expose a text’s possibility for social change. -

Data-Driven Personalisation and the Law – A Primer Collective Interests engaged by Personalisation in Markets, Politics and Law Uta Kohl, James Davey, Jacob Eisler* Southampton Law School Discussion Paper No: 1 (February 2019) Call for Papers / Expressions of Interest We will be holding a workshop on the topic of ‘Data-Driven Personalisation in Markets, Politics and Law' on Friday 28 June 2019 at Southampton Law School. This is an important emerging area of law that goes well beyond data protection law, raising questions for criminal law, consumer protection, competition and IP law, tort law, administrative law, human rights and anti-discrimination law, law and economics as well as legal and constitutional theory. To give the workshop focus and structure, this position paper provides a snap-shot of what we think about the topic or how we would frame it. We would like to hear your thoughts! Should you be interested in disagreeing, elaborating, confirming, contradicting, dismissing or just reflecting on anything in the paper and present those ideas at the workshop, send us an abstract by Friday 5 April 2019 (Ms Clare Brady [email protected]). We aim to publish an edited popular law/social science book with the most compelling contributions after the workshop. 1 Introduction When Netflix released House of Cards as its first original content in 2013, the series was accompanied by ten different cuts of its trailer. Subscribers were sorted depending on their prior viewing habits: did they like films with Kevin Spacey, or films directed by David Fincher or those with women as lead actors? As this technique has evolved, Netflix has attracted controversy for tailoring its advertising based on prior viewing profiles. -

January 18, 2013 By BRIAN STELTER EARLY in the new Netflix series “House of Cards” the narrator and card player Representative Francis Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, looks straight into the camera and tells viewers: “Power is a lot like real estate. It’s all about location, location, location. The closer you are to the source, the higher your property value.” Underwood is speaking at a presidential inauguration, just outside the Capitol in Washington. As viewers observe the swearing-in he asks in a delicious Southern drawl, “Centuries from now, when people watch this footage, who will they see smiling just at the edge of the frame?” Then Underwood comes into frame again. He’s just a few rows away from the president. He gives the camera a casual wave. Underwood, having been spurned in his bid to become secretary of state, is on a quest for power that’s just as suspenseful as anything on television. But his story will unspool not on TV but on Netflix, the streaming video service that is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in original programming. Its plan for showing “House of Cards,” an adaptation of a 1990 BBC mini-series set in Parliament, will itself be a departure from the usual broadcast approach. On Feb. 1 all 13 episodes will be available at once, an acknowledgment that many of its subscribers like to watch shows in marathon sessions. Another 13 episodes are already in production.
