"It's a real race this time," Mandella said of the mile, $400,000 event—prior to 2016, the Vanity was run at 1 1/8 miles, and prior to 1987 it was 1 1/4 miles at Hollywood Park. That’s not to say the 6-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes hasn't proven herself to be a top racemare in the country—it's just that she's largely been unchal- lenged.

  • A Blink on Blinkbonny
A Blink on Blinkbonny Liz Curtis Scottish Place-Name Society Blinkbonny is an attractive place-name, found from Northumberland to Orkney. Also spelt Blinkbonnie, Blink Bonny and Blink Bonnie, it raises a number of questions. What does the name mean? Where exactly is it found, when does it date from, and what kind of sites does it refer to? Does the topography confirm that it describes places with fine views, as is generally thought? What new acts of naming have the original Blinkbonnies inspired? First recorded in 1752–55 on Roy’s Military Survey of Scotland: Lowlands, the Blinkbonny name has been discussed by Simon Taylor (2008), John Baldwin and Peter Drummond (2011), and John Garth Wilkinson (forthcoming). All agree that it refers to places with fine views, the equivalent of French Bellevue and Italian Belvedere, but differ on its grammatical structure and precise meaning. The name is also mentioned by Johnston (1940, 21), who notes that Blinkbonny is a common Scots name for ‘a pretty spot’ and cites Belle Vue. Baldwin and Drummond (2011, 30), discussing Blinkbonny in the Pentland Hills, suggest it is ‘probably an inversion of Scots bonnie blink, “a fine outlook or view”’. This type of structure is unusual in Scots because the noun precedes the adjective. Simon Taylor, however, has suggested that it is likely to be a verbal place-name, combining ‘the Scots verb blink “look, take a (quick) look”, with bonny being used adverbially.’1 Discussing Blinkbonny in West Lothian, Wilkinson likewise considers it a verbal place-name, combining blink ‘look fondly’ with bonny ‘pretty’, and meaning ‘gaze with admiration’.2 This type of structure, where the adjective is used as an adverb, is commonplace in Scots.

Lord Nelson Company, St Arnaud SITE NO. & NAME: 68.0 LORD NELSON TAILINGS DUMPS 68.1 LORD NELSON MINE SITE LOCATION: CHRYSOLITE HILL, ST ARNAUD HI NO: 68.0 H7524-0039 68.1 H7524-0040 DIRECTIONS: St. Arnaud, tailings are located on the north side of Millet-Dally Road, and the battery foundations are in Pioneer Park, just north of the new swimming pool MUNICIPALITY: Northern Grampians Shire LAND STATUS: Unreserved Crown Land HISTORY: March 1860 (St Arnaud Division). The leaders on Chrysolite Hill, being worked by Doveton, Munch and Company, 1 are still looking well, and by report will yield over 10 oz per ton, this crushing. November 1860 (St Arnaud Division). At the St Arnaud Gold Mining Company’s lease no great improvement has taken place since my last. They have succeeded in breaking through the western reef about eight feet thick, and are continuing their present level (at 100 feet) to strike the eastern reef. The western reef has but little prospect of gold in it, the shaft, in my opinion, being too far south; the same rule holding good on this and nearly every other reef on St Arnaud and that which I explained in my September report of the Chripolite and Ballaarat Reefs, viz. the dip of gold continuing with the strike of reef. On the northern end of this reef (Sebastopol) I washed from five buckets of debris 2 about 1/1-2 dwt of gold. January 1861 (St Arnaud Division). On the older reefs things are still dull, except at Wilson’s Hill, Chrysolite Hill, and Sebastopol, where either machinery is being erected or preparations made for the erection thereof.

  • Names in Multi-Lingual
Richard Coates, England 209 A Natural History of Proper Naming in the Context of Emerging Mass Production: The Case of British Railway Locomotives before 1846 Richard Coates England Abstract The early history of railway locomotives in Britain is marked by two striking facts. The first is that many were given proper names, even where there was no objective need to distinguish them in such a way. The second is that those names tended strongly to suggest essential attributes of the machines themselves, sometimes real as in the case of Puffing Billy, or metaphorical or mythologized as in the cases of Rocket and Vulcan. However when, before long, locomotives came to be produced to standard types, namegiving remained the norm for at least some types but the names themselves tended to be typed, and naturally in a less constrained way than earlier ones. The later onymic types veered sharply away from being literally or metaphorically descriptive. The sources of these second-order onymic types are of some interest, both culturally and anthropologically, and some types tended to be of very long currency in Britain. This paper explores the early history of namegiving in an underexplored area, and proposes a general model for the evolution of name-bestowal practices. *** In this paper, I offer an analysis of the names given to steam railway locomotives in Britain between the creation of the first such machine in 1803–4 and the year 1846, chosen semi- arbitrarily as the cut-off date because of the introduction in 1845–6 of the innovative engines designed by Thomas Crampton.
