Glaadawards March 16, 2013 New York New York Marriott Marquis
#glaadawards MARCH 16, 2013 NEW YORK NEW YORK MARRIOTT MARQUIS APRIL 20, 2013 LOS AnGELES JW MARRIOTT LOS AnGELES MAY 11, 2013 SAN FRANCISCO HILTON SAN FRANCISCO - UnION SQUARE CONNECT WITH US CORPORATE PARTNERS PRESIDENT’S LETTer NOMINEE SELECTION PROCESS speCIAL HONOrees NOMINees SUPPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Thank you for joining us to celebrate fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in the media. Tonight, as we recognize outstanding achievements and bold visions, we also take pause to remember the impact of our most powerful tool: our voice. The past year in news, entertainment and online media reminds us that our stories are what continue to drive equality forward. When four states brought marriage equality to the election FROM THE PRESIDENT ballot last year, GLAAD stepped forward to help couples across the nation to share messages of love and commitment that lit the way for landmark victories in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington. Now, the U.S. Supreme Court will weigh in on whether same- sex couples should receive the same federal protections as straight married couples, and GLAAD is leading the media narrative and reshaping the way Americans view marriage equality. Because of GLAAD’s work, the Boy Scouts of America is closer than ever before to ending its discriminatory ban on gay scouts and leaders. GLAAD is empowering people like Jennifer Tyrrell – an Ohio mom who was ousted as leader of her son’s Cub Scouts pack – to share their stories with top-tier national news outlets, helping Americans understand the harm this ban inflicts on gay youth and families. -

Megyn Price by Amy Dee Stephens
The Smart, Funny Life of Megyn Price By Amy Dee Stephens On film, Megyn Price plays the smart, funny girl. It comes easily to her, because in real life, she’s smart and funny. This Stanford graduate quit a successful finance career to become a comedy actress; a move that has left her laughing ever since! Currently, Price plays the role of Audrey in the CBS television comedy Rules of Engagement. She describes the working conditions as “an opportunity to act adolescent.” “We’re like a group of teenagers, and it’s really as fun as it looks,” Price said. “It’s supposed to be fun! Look what it is--it’s pretending. That’s my job!” Not only is the on-screen dialogue silly, the cast is notorious for pulling practical jokes on each other—ones that aren’t written into the script. “Once, during shooting, I was supposed to pull a compact from my handbag and powder my nose,” Price said. “Thanks to Patrick Warburton, my little New York City character pulls out a can of Skoal instead. See why it’s pure joy when someone else messes up on the set? It makes me so happy!” Price first broke into television in 1993. Her first audition landed her a role in Quantum Leap. “I’d heard stories about people who’d tried out for four thousand roles before getting cast,” Price said. “So after my reading, I went for a jog. When I got home, I had twenty-five messages on my machine that I’d gotten the job, and I was supposed to go to the wardrobe department at Universal Studios by 5:00 that night and start work tomorrow. -

Running head: GRAPHIC EVANGELISM 1 Graphic Evangelism The Mainstream Graphic Novel for Christian Evangelism Mark Cupp A Senior Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation in the Honors Program Liberty University Spring 2013 GRAPHIC EVANGELISM 2 Acceptance of Senior Honors Thesis This Senior Honors Thesis is accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation from the Honors Program of Liberty University. ______________________________ Edward Edman, MFA Thesis Chair ______________________________ Chris Gaumer, MFA Committee Member ______________________________ Ronald Sumner, MFA Committee Member ______________________________ Brenda Ayres, Ph.D. Honors Director ______________________________ Date GRAPHIC EVANGELISM 3 Abstract This thesis explores the use of mainstream graphic novels as a means of Christian evangelism. Though not exclusively Christian, the graphic novel, The Beast Within, will educate its target audience by using attractive illustrations, relatable issues, and understandable morals in a fictional, biblically inspired story. This thesis will include character designs, artwork, chapter summaries, and a single chapter of a self-written, self- illustrated graphic novel along with a short summary of Christian references and symbols. The novel will follow six half-human, half-animal warriors on their adventure to restore the balance of their world, which has been disrupted by a powerful enemy. GRAPHIC EVANGELISM 4 Graphic Evangelism The Mainstream Graphic Novel for Christian Evangelism Introduction As recorded in Matthew 28:16-20, all Christians are commanded by Christ to spread the Gospel to all corners of the earth. Many believers almost immediately equate evangelism to Sunday morning services, church mission trips, or distribution of witty, ever-popular salvation tracts; however, Jesus utilized other methods to teach His people, such as telling simple stories and using familiar images and illustrations. -

Growing up with Vertigo: British Writers, Dc, and the Maturation of American Comic Books
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by ScholarWorks @ UVM GROWING UP WITH VERTIGO: BRITISH WRITERS, DC, AND THE MATURATION OF AMERICAN COMIC BOOKS A Thesis Presented by Derek A. Salisbury to The Faculty of the Graduate College of The University of Vermont In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Specializing in History May, 2013 Accepted by the Faculty of the Graduate College, The University of Vermont, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts, specializing in History. Thesis Examination Committee: ______________________________________ Advisor Abigail McGowan, Ph.D ______________________________________ Melanie Gustafson, Ph.D ______________________________________ Chairperson Elizabeth Fenton, Ph.D ______________________________________ Dean, Graduate College Domenico Grasso, Ph.D March 22, 2013 Abstract At just under thirty years the serious academic study of American comic books is relatively young. Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC. -
