  • Limited Distribution Sampler—Not for Sale
LIMITED DISTRIBUTION SAMPLER—NOT FOR SALE THE OFFICIAL COMPANION BOOK TO THE ® MINISERIES SM A MARCH 2010 NEW AMERICAN LIBRARY CALIBER HARDCOVER Introduction Hundreds of great books have been written about the Pacific War. The majority of these volumes fall into one of three categories: a book about the war in general; a book that illuminates every detail of a single battle or important aspect; or a book by a veteran about his experiences. While all of these have their place in the historiography of such an important event, there is room for one more. The goal of The Pacific is to take the reader through the Pacific War, from first to last, through the eyes of a select few of the men who fought it. In this way, the reader enjoys the immediacy of the individual narrative, but sees the war as a whole. To achieve this goal, the five stories included here were chosen because they are representative of the experience. Between these men, they fought many of the great battles of the Pacific War. The coincidences and relationships that connect the five men allow their experiences to arrive in the context within which they occurred. The historical perspective emerges in a variety of ways. After carefully choosing the right stories, and developing them to their fullest, the author has chosen to provide only a thin skein of omniscience. Given its goal, this work is self-evidently not a definitive history of the entire war or even of the battles that it covers. Attempting to tell the story of individuals is fraught with perils.

  • NLMC National Latino Media Council
NLMC National Latino Media Council National Latino Media Council (NLMC) Annual Television Network Diversity Report: 2013-2014 Season Released September 18, 2014 Pursuant to memoranda of understanding established fifteen years ago between the Multi-Ethnic Media Coalition and ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, the NLMC, the nation’s most influential Latino media coalition, comprised of thirteen of the largest Latino civil rights and advocacy organizations, issues this progress report based on data reported to NLMC by the networks listed above. The report covers Latino inclusion efforts of the four networks in front and back of camera. The memoranda preclude NLMC from disclosing the exact number of Latinos in any given category, however, NLMC may rate the performance of the networks. In past years, NLMC has graded the networks on a typical A-F grade scale in the following categories: scripted actors, unscripted actors, writers and producers, directors, program development, procurement, entertainment executives and commitment to diversity. This year, NLMC has retained the categories but amended the grade scale to a simpler three- point scale. The grading scale is as follows: “Good”: Good results and/or efforts “Mediocre”: Mediocre results and/or efforts “Bad”: Poor results and/or efforts Over the years, the nature of the relationship has changed between NLMC and all of the networks. In the past, NLMC was beating its fists, but today NLMC has developed partnerships with leaders of all of the networks. Network presidents have all espoused a desire to increase Latino inclusion, and are partnering with NLMC to achieve a more multicultural slate both in front and back of camera.

  • HBO Signature Schedules Marathon of BAND of BROTHERS and the PACIFIC to Commemorate the 75Th Anniversary of the End of World War II
HBO Signature schedules marathon of BAND OF BROTHERS and THE PACIFIC to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II Miami, FL., August 27, 2020 – On September 2, 1945, Japan signed their unconditional surrender and ended World War II, one of the biggest horrors experienced by humanity. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of this event that marked the course of history, HBO Signature will broadcast a special marathon of BAND OF BROTHERS and THE PACIFIC, two epic productions with different views on the pain and harshness of the battlefield, which brought together two great talents from the film industry: Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. All episodes of THE PACIFIC and BAND OF BROTHERS will be able for viewing on September 1 and 2, respectively, starting at 12:00 pm, on HBO Signature. BAND OF BROTHERS is based on the bestseller of the same name by Stephen E. Ambrose, and follows the trajectory of the members of the Easy Company, an elite group of American paratroopers who fought in Europe during World War II. The fiction is complemented by moving testimonies from real-life survivors from the battalion, as well as by memories from journalists of the time and by letters from the soldiers. The characters in BAND OF BROTHERS are inspired by these war veterans and by their shocking memories of the war. This blockbuster focuses on the stories of companionship between these brothers while on the battlefield and the bonds they forged during their traumatic experience, as well as on the brutality depicted in the stories about the war and the devastating fear of the young soldiers in the trenches.

  • Playing the Big Easy: a History of New Orleans in Film and Television
PLAYING THE BIG EASY: A HISTORY OF NEW ORLEANS IN FILM AND TELEVISION Robert Gordon Joseph A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Cynthia Baron, Advisor Marlise Lonn Graduate Faculty Representative Clayton Rosati Andrew Schocket © 2018 Robert Joseph All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Cynthia Baron, Advisor Existing cultural studies scholarship on New Orleans explores the city’s exceptional popular identity, often focusing on the origins of that exceptionality in literature and the city’s twentieth century tourism campaigns. This perceived exceptionality, though originating from literary sources, was perpetuated and popularized in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries by film and television representations. As Hollywood’s production standards evolved throughout the twentieth century, New Orleans’ representation evolved with it. In each filmmaking era, representations of New Orleans reflected not only the production realities of that era, but also the political and cultural debates surrounding the city. In the past two decades, as the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the passage of film tax credits by the Louisiana Legislature increased New Orleans’ profile, these debates have been more present and driven by New Orleans’ filmed representations. Using the theoretical framework of Guy Debord’s spectacle and the methodology of New Film History and close “to the background” textual analysis, this study undertakes an historical overview of New Orleans’ representation in film and television. This history starts in the era of Classical Hollywood (1928-1947) and continues through Transitional Hollywood (1948-1966), New Hollywood (1967-1975), and the current Age of the Blockbuster (1975-).
