  • Genetic and Morpho-Physiological Differentiation in a Limpet Population
Nuñez et al. Helgol Mar Res (2018) 72:16 https://doi.org/10.1186/s10152-018-0519-1 Helgoland Marine Research ORIGINAL ARTICLE Open Access Genetic and morpho‑physiological diferentiation in a limpet population across an intertidal gradient Jesús Darío Nuñez*, Pedro Fernández Iriarte, Emiliano Hernán Ocampo, Enrique Madrid and Maximiliano Cledón Abstract Marine organism adaptive capacity to diferent environmental conditions is a research priority to understand what conditions are important in structuring the spatial distribution of natural populations. In this context, this study evalu- ates whether potential diferences in Siphonaria lessonii morphology (size and shell shape) and physiology (water loss regulation) at diferent shore heights are linked to genetically distinguishable individuals. To achieve this goal, we compared size-frequency distribution, morphometric, and genetic data (ISSR-PCR technique) of S. lessonii from the upper, middle and lower shore. We complemented these feld samplings with laboratory experiments on water loss and mortality. Genetic analysis showed diferent genetic composition for individuals from the upper and lower shore. This pattern was accompanied by morpho-physiological variations: the upper shore had fewer small limpets, lower shell shape dispersion (with a morphotype characterized by a higher shell), and less water loss and mortality related to air exposure than the lower shore. The results reported herein support the idea that the extreme and unpredict- able conditions of the upper shore may impose strong selection pressure on its inhabitants, leading to considerable morpho-physiological diferentiation consistent with diferent genetic composition. This probably plays an important role in structuring the spatial distribution of natural S. lessonii populations with a possible efect on size-structure distribution.

Less studied is whether non-indigenous species, particularly those that are important 29 as facilitators in their native range, have persistent positive effects in their invaded range despite 30 a lack of a shared evolutionary history with the invaded community. Here, we manipulated the 31 density of a habitat-forming facilitator, the high intertidal acorn barnacle Balanus glandula, 32 factorially with herbivore density in its native range (Bluestone Point, British Columbia, Canada) 33 and invaded range (Punta Ameghino, Chubut Province, Argentina) to determine how this 34 facilitator differentially affects associated species at these two locations.

ZooKeys 963: 1–36. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.963.52234 Abstract An increase in richness of benthic marine mollusks towards high latitudes has been described on the Pacific coast of Chile in recent decades. This considerable increase in diversity occurs specifically at the beginning of the Magellanic Biogeographic Province. Within this province lies the Strait of Magellan, considered the most important channel because it connects the South Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. These characteristics make it an interesting area for marine research; thus, the Strait of Magellan has histori- cally been the area with the greatest research effort within the province.

Ángel Gallardo 470, C1405DJR, Buenos Aires, Argentina ABSTRACT: Haplosporidium patagon was found parasitizing Siphonaria lessonii and S. lateralis, 2 siphonariid gastropods co-occurring on the littoral rocky shore at Puerto Deseado, Santa Cruz, Argentina. Gastropods from 2 habitats representing 2 different levels of environmental harshness were studied. In both cases, S. lessonii showed a higher prevalence of infection (3.78%) over the entire 14 mo study period than S. lateralis (0.13%). Very different values of prevalence of infection were observed at the different sampling sites: Site 1, the more restrictive habitat (exposed for long periods to desiccation during low tides, higher ultraviolet exposure, and high ranges of tempera- ture variation) showed a higher prevalence value (5.99%) than Site 2 (1.46%). Statistical differ- ences in prevalence were also found between values corresponding to the austral spring (3.35% at Site 1 and 0.74% at Site 2) and winter (13.79% at Site 1 and 2.13% at Site 2). The presence/ absence of H. patagon did not vary significantly with gastropod shell length. Infection affected the digestive gland, whose normal histology was greatly modified. The hermaphroditic gonads were also affected; the female germinal cells disappeared or only a few primary or previtellogenic oocytes were present, and vitellogenesis was inhibited.

Spawning intensity in the field as well as the gonadic index were calculated monthly. Both female and male gametes were observed simul- taneously within acini of adult individuals and continuously throughout the year. Oogenesis started in the mid-autumn (October), with gonads characterized mainly by proliferation of female cells. After that, oocytes progressively increased in number and vol- ume until summer, when the evacuation stage frequency was the highest.

Spermatogenesis was classified into seven stages of development. B. glabrata histomorphometric parameters as a tool for environmental and public health researches. Abstract: The reproductive system has a fundamental role in population dynamics and several reproduction strategies have been shaped by the environment over time. Many environmental pressures are generated by releasing pollutants, as endocrine disruptors, that can affect the reproductive system of individuals, among them invertebrates. The freshwater snails Biomphalaria spp. are used as biomonitor in several ecotoxicological studies; however, there are few studies about gametogenesis and morphology of reproductive snail cells, which could be used as a new biomarker. In this sense, the current study aims to characterize Biomphalaria glabrata gametogenesis, bringing new histomorphometric parameters for germinative cells. Results showed that the hermaphrodite tissue is formed by several acini with simple pavement epithelium with germinative and somatic cells.

WSN’s roots can be traced back to 1910 when a group of biologists, concerned about the lack of scientific meetings on the west coast, formed the Biological Society of the Pacific (call this our larval phase). The BSP was intended to include “any person interested in scientific work of a research nature.” In 1915, the American Society of Naturalists invited the BSP to join as a Pacific chapter under the ASN banner. Although the BSP voted in favor, the merger was eventually rejected by the ASN Executive Committee, who felt that we might not be sufficiently selective in admitting members. Through this process, the BSP formally metamorphosed into the Western Society of Naturalists in 1916. The first annual meeting of the society that would become WSN featured four scientific presentations and a dinner. Since then, our meetings and our society have grown substantially, but we still proudly welcome everyone who is interested in scientific work of a research nature. This year, we celebrate our 101st meeting. The circumstances are unusual, we are in the midst of a global pandemic, and also in a period of increased commitment to our society’s diversity, equity and inclusion of all naturalists.

Survey of Brown 2915, U9120ACD Puerto Madryn, Chubut, Argentina trematodes in intertidal snails from Patagonia, Argentina: new larval forms and diversity Abstract assessment. Journal of Helminthology 1–10. https://doi.org/10.1017/S0022149X18000329 Larval trematodes are the main parasites of snails, and they play a crucial role because they usually castrate their snail hosts and can thus alter their population and community dynamics. Received: 10 November 2017 This study involved a survey of seven gastropod species (Crepipatella dilatata, Fissurella Accepted: 9 March 2018 radiosa, Nacella magellanica, Pareuthria fuscata, Siphonaria lessonii, S. lateralis and Trophon Author for correspondence: geversianus) parasitized by 12 trematode species (one hemiurid, one gymnophallid, two C. Gilardoni, E-mail: gilardoni@cenpat-conicet. lepocreadiids, two microphallids, one notocotylid, two renicolids, one philophtalmid, one gob.ar schistosomatid and one zoogonid) from southern Patagonia (47°S, 65°W), Argentina. Only F. radiosa was free of parasites. The study included the description of five new larvae, based on morphological and molecular information, and a comparison of the parasite diver- sity with that of a northern locality (42°S, 64°W), characterized by a lower mollusc diversity. Species richness and diversity of parasites were higher in the southern site. This suggests a correlation between the level of parasitism and the diversity of molluscs (first intermediate hosts), which is higher at the high-latitude site and seems to attract shorebirds, which disperse the digenean eggs and facilitate the completion of their life cycles.
