We pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging. MESSAGES Premier of Queensland & Minister Welcome to the 2019 Australian Women in Music Awards. The Queensland Government is proud to support this showcase event for a second year. It is a fabulous way to pay tribute to the many talented women who are creating music or working behind the scenes to support Australia’s Annastacia Palaszczuk MP flourishing music industry. PREMIER OF QUEENSLAND MINISTER FOR TRADE We are delighted the Awards have returned to Queensland, home to some of this country’s finest female musicians. We recognise however, that while they have found success and been embraced by audiences the world over, there are many other gifted women just like them, right across Australia, who are struggling to break through because of gender barriers. Female artists tend to earn less than male performers, receive less airplay on Australian radio and hold little more than one-quarter of senior and strategic roles in key music industry associations. Shining a dedicated spotlight on these issues and recognising the exceptional work of female artists and industry professionals, is a vital step in creating greater visibility and opportunities for all Australian women in music. This is what these Awards are about. We congratulate this year’s winners, cheer on all those who are following MINISTERDi FOR Farmer CHILD SAFETY,MP YOUTH in their rhythmic footsteps, and wish everyone a memorable time AND WOMEN AND MINISTER FOR celebrating outstanding female talent.

Gecko Studio Gallery Newsletter March April 2018 Kerry Spokes Lost in Reverie – Artist Statement 2018 The innocence of a child is the backdrop for Kerry Spokes in an exhibition exploring the modern world of politics, war, gender identity and other complex themes. Using images of children at play or ‘lost in reverie’ Spokes portrays these ideas with an honesty, clarity and innocence not shown by the media, politicians and the grown-up world. Employing printmaking, drawing and watercolour as her medium, the reoccurring images of androgynous children suspended in spontaneous poses and complete immersion of (in?) their imaginary worlds are a staple of Spokes’ creative vision. Alongside sits another body of work of which Spokes is well known for; employing her other creative passion of digital collage. Using apps on her iPad or iPhone, she weaves a story into each piece she creates. • The Second English Folk Revival, C. 1945-1970 Julia Yvonne Mitchell
Subterranean Bourgeois Blues: The Second English Folk Revival, c. 1945-1970 Julia Yvonne Mitchell UCL This thesis is submitted for the degree of PhD. 2 I, Julia Yvonne Mitchell, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This thesis explores the folk revival phenomenon in England, through an original examination of its place in the social and political history of the country after the Second World War. Although its roots stretched back to the early twentieth century, the post- war English folk revival significantly occurred in the context of the nation’s de- industrialisation, and exposed tensions between, on the one hand, a nostalgic lament for a fast-disappearing working class life, and a ‘forward-looking’ socialist vision of working-class culture. The original contribution to knowledge of this project lies in its analytic approach to the English folk revival as an important part of the post-war political culture. It looks at the revival from the outside in, and contextualizes the movement in the social and political story of post-war England, while also placing it within a dynamic transnational framework, a complex cross-Atlantic cultural exchange with its more well-known American contemporary. In so doing, this thesis contributes to the existing historiographies of folk revivalism in England, as well as the social and political historiographical discourses of the postwar period: the continued salience of class in English society; the transformation of the nation’s economic infrastructures; the social and political influence of the Welfare State – the folk revival tapped into all of these overlapping strands, and helped to magnify them.

Maume Dr. Annulla Linders (Reader) ABSTRACT Cultural capital refers to the role certain cultural practices, knowledge, attitudes, and abilities play in the reproduction of social class. This concept has emerged as a powerful framework for the study of inequality and the intersection of structure and agency. Previous research has focused primarily on the effects of cultural capital on the educational outcomes of adolescents, and has paid much less attention to cultural capital’s importance in social contexts involving adults. Further, research in this area has been concerned mainly with the role of social class, while neglecting issues of race and gender. This study uses data gathered from extensive personal interviews and participant observation at Aimco, a multinational corporation headquartered in the Midwest, to examine three main research questions involving cultural capital, race, gender, and class.
