The Decemberists's the Tain
November 2, 2015 American Folk Rock Cattle Raid: The Decemberists’s The Tain Kendra Leonard (Humble, TX) The Decemberists’s The Tain is a five-part, 18-minute audiovisual piece in which the music and lyrics obliquely comment on the story, crafted in stop-motion animation using paper silhouettes. In this confluence of music and literature, we hear and see an ancient Irish epic become a twentieth-century folk rock narrative. The combination of roots music with an edge and sly, knowing lyrics—together with the animation—offers an imaginative approach to the legend, the action of which is said to have taken place in the first century CE. The Decemberists’s The Tain. It’s worth the whole 18 minutes, I promise. In the original Irish legend—Táin Bó Cúailnge (pronounced “Tane bo coo-lenje”) or The Cattle Raid of Cooley—Queen Medb of Connacht plots to steal the prize bull of Ulster, the neighboring kingdom. But the bull is protected by the great Irish hero Cúchulainn, who has a number of supernatural friends who mostly help him in his quest to save the bull and, ultimately, Ulster. The battles of the Raid generally involve Cúchulainn (“coo hull-an”) against a single foe, but at times he must take on an entire army by himself, as the other warriors of Ulster are cursed and suffer a debilitating illness. The story of the Raid is one of the oldest in Irish literature and has been translated into English several times. In The Decemberists’s video, the artists include a simplified version of the story using intertitles—a technique from silent film where frames of text help viewers understand the action sequences. -

Decemberists Albums Free Download Torrent the Decemberists Release Music Video on Bittorrent
decemberists albums free download torrent The Decemberists Release Music Video on BitTorrent. The indie rock band “The Decemberists” has more faith in BitTorrent than MTV. The band from Portland, Oregon want their video to be available to a wide public, and BitTorrent is the easiest way to do so. For the most part, MTV and VH1 won’t touch video unless bands have sold a huge number of records, it’s impossible to get rotation.” Publishing a video on BitTorrent, is cheap, easy and efficient. The hardcore fans helped to seed the torrent and within a couple of days the torrent was downloaded more that 2000 times. Slim Moon, founder of Kill Rock Stars, the Decemberists’ record label responds: “No matter where you stand on issues of copyright, a network like BitTorrent is really for exactly this kind of thing When you have content that you want to freely distribute, it seems like … the most logical way to distribute.” The video for “Sixteen Military Wives” was shot for less than $6,000 at a high school in Portland, Oregon, and features members of the band participating in a Model United Nations, a simulation popular in high schools to teach students about problem-solving and international relations. In the video, Decemberists singer Colin Meloy represents the United States and boldly declares war on Luxembourg, a not-so-subtle jab at the Bush administration’s decision to go to war. By the way, their album “Castaways and Cutouts” probably looks familiar to most people in the BitTorrent community. The Decemberists Albums: Ranked from Worst to Best. -

University of Central Florida, 2011 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of English in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Spring Term 2015 ABSTRACT This thesis examines contemporary folk music from no earlier than 2006, specifically music of the bands The Decemberists, Fleet Foxes, and Bon Iver. Providing a close reading of select songs, I prove that modern music is seeing a revival in the Romantic Era and Transcendentalist ideals and philosophy. The works and philosophy of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), William Wordsworth (1770-1850), John Keats (1795-1821), as well as Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), among others and their critics are all considered for points of comparison to the modern lyrics. -
Artist-Provided Bios Festival
ARTIST-PROVIDED BIOS FESTIVAL HEADLINERS: The Motet – Friday Aug. 10 at 8:30 p.m. on Mountain Avenue Stage Music and escapism go hand-in-hand, and a concert or an album can unlock another world, if you let it. The Motet respect and revere this time-honored phenomenon. Fusing fiery funk, simmering soul and improvisational inventiveness, the Denver, CO seven-piece—Lyle Divinsky [vocals], Dave Watts [drums], Joey Porter [keyboards], Garrett Sayers [bass], Ryan Jalbert [guitar], Parris Fleming [trumpet] and Drew Sayers [saxophone]—have continually provided an escape for listeners over the course of seven full-length albums since 1998, including their latest release, “Totem.” That extends to countless sold-out shows and festivals everywhere from Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, and Summer Camp to All Good Music Festival and High Sierra Music Festival as well as 16 consecutive years of themed Halloween concerts. After quietly building a diehard and devoted following, 2016 represented a watershed year for the musicians. They welcomed Lyle and Drew into the fold and released Totem, which drew acclaim from Relix, AXS, 303 Magazine and many others. For the first time, The Motet sold out the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater—the holy grail venue of their hometown—cataloged on “Live at Red Rocks.” Sell-outs followed everywhere from The Fillmore (San Francisco) and Tipitina’s (New Orleans) to Brooklyn Bowl (Brooklyn), Park West (Chicago) and Crystal Ballroom (Portland). The group locked into an unbreakable groove. Following Jam Cruise and a second Red Rocks gig, the band fired up the new single “Supernova.” Strutting between hypnotic horns and swaggering guitars, the track sees The Motet blast off to another galaxy.
