Q) I like to walk the circle but when I pass the billiards room, the odor is terrible. Is it possible to put plug in fragrance or spray every day? A) We have done so. Additionally, the Senior Center Manager had a conversation with someone who might be able to help.

Q) With the library being located in the sunshine light, it becomes very hot. Is there something to do to lower the temperature in the library? A) Toward the end of June, we replaced most of the controls in the Senior Center and all rooms should be more comfortable and consistent. Let the Front Desk know if this has addressed your concerns.

Q) Toenail trimming, a local pedicurist can have a weekly sign-up sheet for weekly visits; not full blown visits but just quick trimming. A) The Senior Center doesn’t offer any programs that appear to be an endorsement of a professional product or service.

Q) Please print the hours for the reading and the computer room in the newsletter. A) We’ll look into what we can do about that.

Q) I have been coming for quite a while. I am well aware that on most days and on certain hours the radio station, WLS has to be so low so you can’t hear it. Can you please put the volume higher or why even have it on at all? Actually, I am a little surprised the average age would prefer WLS. A) We checked and the radio station is on WLS and has been for quite a while. The radio volume is set to be background music and has one volume for the whole building. We can turn it to “page only” in the individual rooms - meaning we can turn the radio off in individual rooms, but we cannot adjust the volume for any particular area as it’s all one system.

HAVE A SUGGESTION? Write down your question or comment on the form provided at the Suggestion Box in the lobby, near the Main Office front desk. Name and number are optional. All suggestions are reviewed by the Senior Center Manager and Advisory Council President. If your suggestion is an urgent or serious matter that requires immediate attention, please report it to the Main Office instead.

Arlington Heights Senior Citizens Commission

Congratulations, Kathy Kasprowicz, on Receiving the 2018 Ken Hood Award!

On July 31st, what would have been Ken Hood’s 111th birthday, the Village of Arlington Heights Senior Citizens Commission proudly announced Ms. Kathy Kasprowicz (pictured at right) as the 11th recipient of the annual Kenneth Hood Senior Service Award. Ms. Kasprowicz was presented with the Award at the Village Board of Trustees meeting on August 20th.

In 2006, a local service provider released their senior transportation program. Kathy Kasprowicz, having been their staff coordinator, knew the program was too important to senior citizens and had to continue. Ms. Kasprowicz and friend/ mentor Marie Payes explored the possibility of local sponsors, including churches. Unable to find a sponsor after several months, it became obvious that this little transportation program would have to become its own stand-alone 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization. Escorted Transportation Northwest (ETS/NW) became a reality on the Kasprowicz’ kitchen table on September 1, 2006. ETS/NW’s mission is to provide transportation with compassion and companionship. In 2013, she retired as the Executive Director of ETS/NW. She continues her support as a volunteer driver and as a Board of Director and BOD President.

Kathy knits scarves for homeless persons and distributes them at PADS sites; she serves on the Wheeling Township Board for Seniors and Aging; she volunteers with Catholic Charities Northwest Senior Services and founded and remains active with the St. James Elizabeth Ministry that provides support to women with problems in childbearing and along with Carol Anderson, helped start and now she continues to be a driver for the Wheels to Worship program at St. James that helps seniors get to church. Kathy is also in her third year of serving on the St. James Parish Council. She also spends Monday mornings in the St. James School Library. Kathy had the privilege of knowing Ken Hood and working with him on a few projects along the way. Like Ken himself, Kathy Kasprowicz throws herself into her work for seniors with a passion for seniors, a sense of humor and a zest for living.
