RÉSUMÉ Ce mémoire de maîtrise porte sur la problématique que pose la représentation de • l'ISKCON (Société internationale pour la conscience de Krishna) par ses adeptes et exégètes traditionnels d'une part et par les observateurs et chercheurs spécialistes de la question d'autre part. Le discours sur la conscience de Krishna, qui comporte à la fois des aspects religieux et séculiers selon l'entité qui le représente, pourrait très bien se prêter à une analyse comparative. S'agissant des nouveaux mouvements religieux, la tension entre le discours théiste d'un côté et le discours séculier moderne de l'autre est habituellement alimentée par la question du contrôle s'exerçant sur les membres de tels mouvements. On considère très souvent que les disciples des nouvelles pratiques religieuses sont l'objet d'un lavage de cerveau et manipulés pendant leur recrutement à titre de néophytes; le contrôle qu'ils exercent sur leur propre vie ne serait plus crédible. Les adeptes de l'ISKCON affirment le contraire: il n'est véritablement possible de contrôler sa vie personnelle que grâce à la conscience de Krishna, la société laïque moderne en général et la science profane moderne en particulier ne parvenant pas à fournir un but et un sens à l'existence humaine. La méthode d'analyse comparative choisie est fondée sur L'ordre du discours (1971) de Michel Foucault. Dans ce traité, Foucault présente les processus rattachés aux discours religieux, médical, politique et littéraire ainsi qu'au discours profane moderne. Ce penseur français est également connu pour sa métamorphose personnelle, de philosophe militant niant la subjectivité « anthropologique» (Foucault, 1970) en ardent défenseur de cette théorie (Foucault, 1981-1982). Des thèmes foucaldiens comme les relations de pouvoir, le sexe, le contrôle et les techniques de soi traditionnelles peuvent être considérés comme des aspects fondamentaux de la controverse entourant l'ISKCON. Espérons que l'analyse discursive de cette controverse saura contribuer à une meilleure compréhension de l'aspect ethnolinguistique de ce débat et de la nature du besoin qu'a l 'homme de vivre dans une société différente de la société dominante. MOTS-CLÉS: Anthropologie, ethnolinguistique, discours, religieux, séculier, ISKCON, techniques de sOl ABSTRACT The purpose ofthis thesis is to address the problem of the representative of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) both by its traditional followers and interpreters from one si de and scholarly observers and researchers on the other. Krishna Consciousness discourse, which demonstrates both theistic and secular aspects, depending on the representing agency, appears as a potentially good candidate for a comparative analysis. When new religious movements are concerned, the tension between theistic discourse on one si de and the modem secular one on the other is usually fuelled by the issues of control concerning the members of the movements in question. Quite often the followers of the new religious practices are considered as brainwashed and manipulated in the process of being recruited as neophytes by their adoptive institutions; their control over their personallives is no longer credible. The ISKCON's followers though c1aim the opposite: the real control over one's personal life is possible only with Krishna consciousness, because modem secular society in general and modem secular science in particular fail to provide goal and sense of meaning for human existence. The method of comparative analysis will be based on the Foucault's treatise L'ordre du discours (1971). In this work Foucault outlined the procedures relevant to religious, medical, political, literary, and modem secular discourses. The French thinker is also known for his personal metamorphosis from a militant philosopher denying "anthropological" subjectivity (Foucault 1970) into someone fervently defending it later (Foucault 1981-82). Foucaultian topics like power relations, sex, control, and traditional self-techniques can be recognised as salient features of the ISKCON controversy. The discourse analysis of such a controversy will hopefully promote a betler understanding of the ethnolinguistic aspect of the ISKCON's debate and the nature of the human need of living in a society different from the mainstream one.     296 CHAPTER VII EVALUATION AND CONCLUSION It is quite significant to find these two theories viz. Drstisrspvada and Ekajivavada going hand in hand in the works of Prakasananda. Madhusudana too, deals with this topic of one-soul immediately after the topic of Drstisrsp as put-forth by Vyasatirtha also. In a way the theory of drspsrsp is a sound background to the following topic i.e. the ekajlvavada. Naturally, the motive behind a logical presentation of the principles of this theory i.e. drslisrsU, to prove the world beyond doubt to be illusory/ is faithfully justified even by this theory of single-soiil. The exposition of drspsrsp severly necessitates the advocation of Ekajlvavada ; because ; the seer {drasta) whose perception is STSp must be accounted for. Technically it is called Upajivyopajhaka-bhava-sahgati. How has this issue emerged out of your earlier work on the study of early modern India’s religious cultures? Our first South Asian History and Culture volume was really an attempt to explore the interface between social history and the history of religious cultures. This volume moves the focus from broader religious cultures, really to individual intellectuals - to situate their intellectual work within what we know about their lives, their personal, their social, in some cases political circumstances. This of course is what the routine study of the western intellectual canon expects, and there is no reason to assume that scholars and intellectuals in India do not warrant the same level of individual attention. 2. How does the study of early modern South Asia relate to the models of social and intellectual history we have received from the study of early modern Europe? Well of course the dominant model in Europe is still very much the contextualist approach of the Cambridge school and Quentin Skinner. Now it has always been thought that we do not have enough information about Sanskrit intellectuals to make this approach possible. We try to show, in this volume, that we do in many cases have enough information for the kind of contextualisation that the Cambridge school developed so successfully. But there are also important differences from this model. Sanskrit intellectuals were committed to the idea of continuing conversations within stable disciplinary formations of very great longevity. Their objects of study were entire disciplines - the sastras or ‘sciences’ - and these are much broader contexts of intervention than Skinner and his school considered.

He is the last of the great Acharyas of Vedanta, and is also the 22nd commentator on the Brahma-Sûtra of Veda Vyasa. His doctrine asserts that the differences are eternally real, and that hence there is more than one absolute real, and that Hari (Vishnu) is the only entity praised in the Shrutis and their adjuncts. Thus, he always identifies the Brahman of the Upanishads with Vishnu, and forcefully argues against the dichotomy of Shrutis (tattvaavedaka / atattvaavedaka) as claimed by Sri Sankaracharya, saying that such arbitration of apaurusheya scripture is unacceptable both logically and spiritually.

Sri Madhvacarya?), also known as Purna Prajna and Ananda Tirtha, was the chief proponent of Tattvavada "Philosophy of Reality", popularly known as the Dvaita (dualism) school of Hindu philosophy. It is one of the three most influential Vedanta philosophies. Madhvacarya was one of the important philosophers during the Bhakti movement. He was a pioneer in many ways, going against standard conventions and norms. According to tradition, Madhvacarya is believed to be the third incarnation of Vayu (Mukhyapra?a). <b>Birth and Childhood</b> Madhvacarya was born on the auspicious day of Vijaya-dasami (Dussehra) in 1238 CE (AD) at Pajaka, a tiny hamlet near U?upi. <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/narayana-panditacharya/">Naraya?a Pa??itacarya</a> who later wrote Madhvacarya's biography has not recorded his parents' names. Traditionally it is believed that Nadillaya Naraya?a Bha??a as name of the father and Vedavati as Madhvacarya's mother. They named him Vasudeva at birth. Later he became famous by the names Pur?a-prajña, Ananda- tirtha and Madhvacarya. Before the birth of Madhva, when his parents had gone for a purchase in the market, a beggar climbed a dhvaja stambha (flag-post in front of a temple) and announced: "Bhagavan (Lord) Vayu deva is going to take birth for the revival of Vedic dharma in Pajaka k?etra to a couple." The prediction made by the beggar was discussed by the parents of Madhva till they reached home.
