  • Document in Detail: Diocese of Canterbury Medieval Fragments
Issue 10, Summer 2018 Kent Archives is set for a busy summer. In this edition of our newsletter we introduce you to our joint project with Findmypast to digitise our parish register collection. The image in our header is from the first Cranbrook parish composite register [ref. P100/1/A/1], and is just one of the thousands of registers that will be digitised. We are also in the middle of transferring the remaining historic records of the Diocese of Canterbury from Canterbury Cathedral Archives to the Kent History and Library Centre to join its probate records, which have been held by Kent Archives since 1946. At the same time, archive cataloguing of one of Maidstone’s major papermaking collections is nearly complete; further World War I commemorative activities are underway; and work continues on the Catalogue Transfer Project and Manorial Documents Register Project for Kent. Document in Detail: Diocese of Canterbury Medieval Fragments [DCb/PRC/50/5] Mark Ballard, Archive Service Officer Among many other records of great value within the records of Canterbury Diocese are the ‘medieval fragments’ [DCb/PRC/49 and DCb/PRC/50], which in the post-Reformation period came to be used as covers, or ‘end-parchments’, for the probate registers. If we can judge by the dates of the act books and wills and inventories registers they covered, this recycling became a habit during the episcopate of Archbishop Matthew Parker (1559-1575). It is perhaps ironic that at precisely the time that Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, probably both closet Roman Catholics, were still being employed to write motets for the Chapel Royal, such disrespectful treatment was being accorded at Canterbury to their medieval predecessors.

    - 1 - Meeting Minutes of the Canterbury Cemetery Trustees - FINAL April 14, 2021 – Canterbury Center Gazebo Members present: John Goegel Jan Cote, and Sam Papps, Trustees; Kent Ruesswick, Sexton; Art Hudson, Selectman. John Goegel called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. and welcomed Jan Cote to the Board of Trustees. He also thanked Selectman Hudson for joining us. Jan Cote made a motion to elect John Goegel as chairman, seconded by Sam Papps. Unanimously voted in the affirmative. Chairman Goegel then moved to elect Sam Papps as Secretary and Treasurer, seconded by Jan Cote. Unanimously voted in the affirmative. Chairman Goegel also made a statement of thanks to Hugh Fifield for his many years of service as a Cemetery Trustee, and to the Town as the Sexton. Jan Cote moved to accept the minutes as written, seconded by John Goegel. Passed unanimously. The board then moved on to discuss item 3 on the agenda, the Pallet gate. It has been known to the Trustees for at least the past five years that the Pallet Cemetery gate is in the possession of Cynthia Clark, who owns property in the Borough. The gate is currently displayed in her home as an art display. The trustees expressed their desire that the gate should be rehung at the cemetery, in its original intended place, and that we are willing to cover the expense of this undertaking of returning it to its original home. Kent noted that the posts had shifted over time that they no longer reflect their original width, where the gate once hung, and it might take stonewall work and some minor excavation to widen the posts again for the gate, probably by Kevin Fife.

  • Draft Local Plan Proposed Site Allocations - Reasons for Site Selection
Topic Paper: Draft Local Plan Proposed Site Allocations - Reasons for Site Selection Dover District Local Plan Supporting document The Selection of Site Allocations for the Draft Local Plan This paper provides the background to the selection of the proposed housing, gypsy and traveller and employment site allocations for the Draft Local Plan, and sets out the reasoning behind the selection of specific site options within the District’s Regional, District, Rural Service, Local Centres, Villages and Hamlets. Overarching Growth Strategy As part of the preparation of the Local Plan the Council has identified and appraised a range of growth and spatial options through the Sustainability Appraisal (SA) process: • Growth options - range of potential scales of housing and economic growth that could be planned for; • Spatial options - range of potential locational distributions for the growth options. By appraising the reasonable alternative options the SA provides an assessment of how different options perform in environmental, social and economic terms, which helps inform which option should be taken forward. It should be noted, however, that the SA does not decide which spatial strategy should be adopted. Other factors, such as the views of stakeholders and the public, and other evidence base studies, also help to inform the decision. The SA identified and appraised five reasonable spatial options for growth (i.e. the pattern and extent of growth in different locations): • Spatial Option A: Distributing growth to the District’s suitable and potentially suitable housing and employment site options (informed by the HELAA and Economic Land Review). • Spatial Option B: Distributing growth proportionately amongst the District’s existing settlements based on their population.
