9 THE PANTILES 18TH CENTURY ELEGANCE

“Today, it is still possible to imagine the cream of 18th century London society parading up and down the Pantiles, an area of quaint buildings and shops that has remained largely unaltered.”

10 Photograph is indicative only The Pantiles is quintessentially Royal Tunbridge Wells, and has been the place to see and be seen in since the 18th century.

It is also the location for the famous Chalybeate Spring, discovered in 1606 and the reason why the town first became so popular. The Pantiles is still the epitome of elegant shopping and dining, strolling in the colonnades and enjoying the sunshine. In the summer there’s the additional attraction of live jazz on Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. The Pantiles Food and Drink Festival is another popular event, taking place over a weekend every September. Local Area Guide | Café Culture & Shopping 1 THE PANTILES Café culture

The Pantiles is the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee and a cake in one of the cafés to be found in the historic colonnades. Many set out open air tables when the weather allows. If you want fine tea and coffee to take home, The Daily Grind Coffee & Tea Emporium, is the place to go. When you’re staying for lunch, you can enjoy fresh seafood, oysters and Champagne at Sankey’s Old Fishmarket, in the heart of The Pantiles.

17 ENJOY INSPIRING ARTS & CULTURE

18 Trinity Theatre Royal Tunbridge Wells has been attracting visitors for over 400 years, ever since the chance discovery of the chalybeate spring in 1606. In Georgian times it became a fashionable spa resort, a rival to nearby Brighton.

The lively social scene in Tunbridge Wells was famously presided over by Richard Beau Nash, who made sure that residents and visitors alike adhered to the ‘rules’ of social behaviour. The town was granted its Royal prefix in 1900 by King Edward Vll, reflecting its popularity with several previous monarchs including Queen Anne, and Prince Albert who were some of its distinguished visitors. 1 THE WELLS FREE SCHOOL

Responding to high demand for more primary school places in Royal Tunbridge Wells, the Wells Free School opened in September 2013 with reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes. As the school grows it will provide places for Years 1 to 6.

Local Area Guide | Education Local The Wells Free School is a small school where the maximum class size is 24 and it will never have more than 168 pupils. This enables more pupil engagement and better academic achievement in a nurturing, supportive atmosphere. The school year is arranged as six terms of equal length. Other innovations include an outdoor classroom, and some teaching in groups of children with a mix of ages and abilities. The Wells Free School Parents and Friends Association has already been established and holds regular meetings.

The school is currently in temporary accommodation but will move to its new building in Royal Wells Park in 2016.
