Sherman’s army marched through Georgia during the American Civil War, it did not travel alone. As many as 17,000 refugee slaves followed his army to the coast; as many, if not more, fled to the army but decided to stay on their plantations rather than march on. This study seeks to understand Sherman’s march from their point of view. It argues that through their refugee experiences, Georgia’s refugee slaves transformed the march into one for their own freedom and citizenship. Such a transformation would not be easy. Not only did the refugees have to brave the physical challenges of life on the march, they had to also exist within a war waged by white men. -

American Conversation E. L. Doctorow September 25, 2008 Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein welcomed award-winning novelist E. L. Doctorow for an “American Conversation.” Doctorow’s work depicts various eras and personalities in American history and has been published in 30 languages. His novels include The March, City of God, Welcome to Hard Times, The Book of Daniel, Ragtime, Loon Lake, World’s Fair, Billy Bathgate, and The Waterworks. He currently holds the Lewis and Loretta Glucksman Chair of English and American Letters at New York University. The program took place in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building. ALLEN WEINSTEIN: We're very fortunate, very privileged tonight to have as, uh, our guest one of the country's, one of the world's finest novelists, and I think most of you know at least some of E.L. Doctorow's dozen books, dozen novels: "City of God," "Welcome to Hard Times," "Book of Daniel," "Ragtime," "Loon Lake," "Lives of the Poets," "World's Fair," "Billy Bathgate," "The Waterworks," and of course the extraordinary book "The March," which is his most recently published book. We, uh... we're going to let our guest have a few introductory words on some of the issues that I'd think we'd like to talk to him about, but let me to say to begin with that this is a banner day for the American Conversations discussions that we've been having, and I thank you, sir, for joining them. Doctorow implements ideas of intertextuality and metafiction in his 2007 novel, The March, which is most notably apparent through its resemblance to the 1939 film, Gone with the Wind. Using Michel de Certeau’s theory of spatial stories and Linda Hutcheon’s of historiographic metafiction, this thesis discusses the layering of Doctorow’s The March from the film seen in the character of Pearl from the novel and Scarlett from the film and Selznick’s version of the burning of Atlanta and Doctorow’s burning of Columbia. -

Dr. Seyyed Mohammad Marandi University of Tehran, Iran Email: [email protected] Dr. Zohreh Ramin University of Tehran, Iran Email: [email protected] Doi:10.5901/mjss.2012.v3n2.465 Abstract: Edgar Lawrence Doctorow is generally regarded as a postmodern historical novelist who mingles the marvelous with the real. His novels are mainly set in the American past. The novels are greatly indebted to historical events and personages but engagement with documentary history is not Doctorow's prime obsession. Critics are at odds in deciding upon the paradox in Doctorow's novels; whether he is a politically minded novelist or an aesthetically obsessed one. Acknowledging the strong political tendencies in Doctorow's novels, many critics claim his enthusiasm and passion for the act of writing finally outweighs the political inclination of the novels. Identifying Historigraphic metafiction as Doctorow's favorite and repeated technique in virtually all his novels, the present reading wishes to observe the novellas from a contrasting perspective. Key words: historical novel; American past; political; aesthetics; historigraphic metafiction. 1. Introduction Long celebrated for his vivid evocations of nineteenth and twentieth-century American life, Edgar Lawrence Doctorow's fiction spans across his country's history during the twentieth century. Doctorow is widely acclaimed for his talent of evoking the past in a way that makes it at once mysterious and familiar. Although much of his fiction focuses on historical fact, Doctorow has stated his preference to fuse the marvelous with the real. -

Doctorow’s Welcome to Hard Times (1960) “Welcome to Hard Times” (1960), E.L. Doctorow’s first novel, differs from the rest of his oeuvre because it is not set in a metropolitan context like New York. References to historical events that contain an apparent “mixture” of “factual” and fic- tional elements that are typical of Doctorow’s oeuvre are less prominent than in his other fiction, though definitely not absent. An analysis of the pioneer setting, the town Hard Times, reveals that other settings (including metropolitan ones like New York) are not merely representations of specific contexts, but portray- als with allegorical elements. Criticism of Doctorow’s fiction does not sufficiently point out the rationale of Doctorow’s fiction in relation to his first novel: it is not just the basic level that contains the true topicality but also the underlying causal and thematic relationships. This article sets out to explore “Welcome to Hard Times” as a case in point. The objective of this article is therefore also to show that an analysis of this novel provides a valuable basis for understanding the allegorical character of his fiction. Angus Fletcher’s theoretical analysis, “Allegory: the theory of a symbolic mode” (1964), serves as a useful starting point for the analysis of the allegorical value of space and the town Hard Times as a microcosmic or symbolic society, as well as the “daemonic agents” in the town and the role of causality. -
Revising Memory in EL Doctorow's the March
SCOTT HALES Marching Through Memory: Revising Memory in E. L. Doctorow’s The March ear the end of E. L. Doctorow’s The March, General William Tecumseh Sherman watches his army parade through Southern streets in the aftermath of a successful “March to the Sea.” As he watches his Nmen pass beneath him, “somewhat less proud than usual of their shabby grooming and dusty uniforms,” Sherman longs to return to life on the march—“not for [the] blood and death” of the violent campaign, but for its “bestowal of meaning to the very ground trod upon.” For Sherman, the march “made every field and swamp and river and road into something of moral consequence,” giving him and his army a sense of purpose. With the march over and the war all but won, however, Sherman cannot help but feel this sense of purpose slipping. With the onset of peace, he realizes that his lifestyle and life’s work have become fractured and morally unintelligible. What is more, he realizes that the once-morally-laden land has become “blank and also diffuse, and ineffable, a thing once again, and victoriously, without reason, [...] completely insensible and without any purpose of its own.” In a sense, Sherman looks upon the reunification of the nation not with optimism, but with sadness for the end of an ordered, purpose-driven way-of-life. His nostalgia for the march distorts the reality of it; in his longing to recapture a life of moral purpose, Sherman forgets the disorder, lawlessness, and brutality that characterized much of his “March to the Sea.” At the same time, he also speculates that the rest of “this unmeaning inhuman planet” will follow suit, looking to his generation’s “warring imprint” for some redemptive sense of value.
