Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. It is disruptive of routine and can challenge long-held practises. Having been through the procedure and survived, we feel we have a lot of experience to share with other institutions who are considering taking on this challenge. The changes that digitization has made to our institution are positive and the digitization a success, but that is not to say that we would not have done some things differently, were we to repeat the exercise. In 2015 Meise Botanic Garden received a grant from the Flemish Government to upgrade its digitization infrastructure and mass digitize 1.2 million specimens from its African and Belgian Herbaria. The new infrastructure improved our workflow significantly, enabling us to digitize specimens five to ten times faster while also improving their quality. The mass digitization part of the project was split into two parts, imaging and transcription. -

High genetic diversity ensures that species can survive and adapt in the face of geographical and environmental changes. The Tanggula Mountains, located in the central of the QTP, have unique geographical significance. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the Tanggula Mountains as a geographical barrier on plant genetic diversity and structure by using Lancea tibetica. A total of 456 individuals from 31 populations were analyzed using eight pairs of microsatellite makers. The total number of alleles was 55 and the number per locus ranged from 3 to 11 with an average of 6.875. The polymorphism information content (PIC) values ranged from 0.2693 to 0.7761 with an average of 0.4378 indicating that the eight microsatellite makers were efficient for distinguishing genotypes. -

All these data are freely available on our new virtual herbarium www.botani calcollections.be. For this we have to thank a generous grant from the Flemish Government. The site was officially launched on the 23rd March, 2018, at the Fourth Annual Meeting of Plant Ecology and Evolution held at Bouchout Castle in Meise Botanic Garden (https:// sites.google.com/plantentuinmeise.be/ampee4/). Before developing the website we conducted a user requirements analysis (Vissers et al. 2017. These requirements formed the basis for development from initial design to the finished product. Lots of features were incorporated to make the site as user-friendly and usable as possible; persistent URIs, zoomable and downloadable images and access to data. Each specimen can be annotated and is available in a machine readable format. -

U druhů byla naměřena délka a šířka průduchů a z literatury byly získány údaje o počtu chromozomů a ekologii druhů. Velikost genomu se v rámci čeledi liší 63-krát. Nejmenší genom byl naměřen u Aquilegia canadensis (2C = 0,75 pg), největší u Ranunculus lingua (2C = 47,93 pg). Mezi dvěma hlavními podčeleděmi Ranunculoideae a Thalictroideae je ve velikosti genomu markantní rozdíl (2C = 2,48 – 47,94 pg a 0,75 – 4,04 pg). -

Ailanthus by SHIU YING Hu Ailanthus is called tree of heaven by some people. In its homeland, China, it is known as Ch’un Shu, pronounced almost like "train" and "sure" in English. Of all the trees introduced from China into Ameri- can gardens, ailanthus is the most widely naturalized. The speci- mens in the Harvard University Herbaria indicate that the species Ailanthus altissima (Miller) Swingle runs wild from Massachusetts in the East to Oregon in the West, and from Toronto, Canada in North America to Tucuman, Argentina (and Buenos Aires, by refer- ence) in South America. In neglected areas of large cities such as Boston, ailanthus grows as trees close to buildings, as hedges, or as bushy aggregates along railroad tracks, highway embankments, walls at the ends of bridges and overpasses, or in cracks of sidewalks and along boundary fences between properties (Figs. 1-2). Around some dwellings the trees are so close to the windows that they prevent light and sunshine from penetrating the rooms, or they send roots to invade the sewers or damage the foundations. Once ailanthus is established, it becomes very difficult to eradicate, for it can sprout from the stumps and on any portion of a root (Fig. 3, left); moreover, a female tree produces a large amount of winged fruits that spread and germinate in the gardens near, or even far away from, the mother plant. For these reasons, ailan- thus has been maligned as a weedy tree by city dwellers. Lately, however, it has attracted the interest of environmentalists, and many of them have asked me questions about the tree both by telephone and in letters. -
