Kelly Rowland Being a part of the sensational girl group Destiny’s Child had this star rising to fame in the early 1990s. Kelly Rowland was born in Atlanta, Georgia, but, at the age of eight, she relocated to Houston, Texas, where she was placed in R&B group Destiny’s Child, which ultimately included Beyonce Knowles and Michelle Williams. After hours of practicing in Tina Knowles’s hair salon and their backyards, their hard work paid off when the girls signed a record deal with Columbia Records in 1997. With powerhouse voices and songs like “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name,” it’s no surprise that they became one of the most successful girl groups of all time. In 2005, they officially called it quits, and the girls pursued their solo careers. Rowland’s debut album Simply Deep hit number 12 on the Billboard charts; she released her follow-up albumMs. Kelly in 2007 and embarked on a world tour. In addition to her singing success, the star expanded her talents to acting, appearing on both the small and big screens. She also appeared as a judge on the U.K. televised singing competition, The X Factor. Always having a humble heart, in 2005, Rowland teamed up with Beyonce after Hurricane Katrina to start The Survivor Foundation. Through their efforts, they were able to provide housing for victims and evacuees in Houston. In 2010, she launched another charitable entity, I Heart My Girlfriends, which focuses on a range of issues including self-esteem, date violence protection, abstinence, and community service. Rowland’s celebrity relationships have been kept quiet for the most part. In 2004, she began dating football player Roy Williams, and the duo announced their celebrity engagement that same year. However, two months before the wedding, the famous couple called it quits. In 2011, Rowland was spotted getting close with manager Tim Weatherspoon and fans speculated whether they were an actual celebrity couple. Three years later, the two had their celebrity wedding in Costa Rica with a few famous guests including the Knowles sisters. The newlyweds welcomed their son Titan Jewell in November 2014..

Chapter 12 Deep Learning 12.1 Introduction In his famous book, "The nature of Statistical Learning Theory:" [37], Vladimir Vapnik stated (in 1995) the four historical periods in the area of learning theory as: 1. Constructing first learning machine 2. Constructing fundamentals of the theory 3. Constructing the neural network 4. Constructing alternatives to the neural network The very existence of the fourth period was a failure of neural networks. Vapnik and others came up with various alternatives to neural network that were far more technologically feasible and efficient in solving the problems at hand at the time and neural networks slowly became history. However, with the modern technological advances, neural networks are back and we are in the fifth historical period: “Re- birth of neural network.” With re-birth, the neural networks are also renamed into deep neural networks or simply deep networks. The learning process is called as deep learning. However, deep learning is probably one of the most widely used and misused term. Since inception, there were no sufficient success stories to back up the over-hyped concept of neural networks. As a result they got pushed back in preference to more targeted ML technologies that showed instant success, e.g., evolutionary algorithms, dynamic programming, support vector machines, etc. The concept of neural networks or artificial neural networks (ANNs) was simple: to replicate the processing methodology of human brain which is composed of connected network of neurons. ANN was proposed as a generic solution to any type of learning problem, just like human brain is capable of learning to solve any problem.

AN EXPERIMENT IN THERAPEUTIC PLANNING: Learning with the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw First Nations by AFTAB ERFAN A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (PLANNING) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) September 2013 ©Aftab Erfan, 2013 Abstract Many of the communities in which planners work are characterized by deeply rooted conflict and collective trauma, a legacy of various forms of injustice, including some that have been enabled by the planning profession itself. In this context, can planning play a healing or therapeutic role, without recreating or perpetuating the cycles of oppression? This dissertation reflects on my community-based action research on Tsulquate, a small First Nations reserve on Vancouver Island, where the Gwa’sala and ‘Nakwaxda’xw people have lived since relocation in 1964. Between 2009 and 2012, and particularly over a year of intensive fieldwork, I engaged in this community to assist in the ambitious task of addressing intergenerational trauma, the importance of which was expressed within the Band’s newly created Comprehensive Community Plan. Written as mixed-genre creative analytic process (CAP) ethnography, the dissertation tells the stories of my engagement, and in particular of a series of public, intergenerational workshops I facilitated using a methodology called Deep Democracy. I document evidence of modest but promising patterns of individual and collective ‘healing’ and ‘transformation’ in the course of the workshops, and evaluate the effectiveness of my tools and approaches using first person (reflective), second person (interpersonal), and third person (informant-based) sources of information.
