Hoy deseo dedicar la habitual catequesis del miércoles a la visita pastoral que he realizado del 20 al 22 de mayo a Praga y Olomouc, en la República Checa, y a Skoczów, Bielsko-Biala y Zywiec, en Polonia. Como se ve, me he detenido en Bohemia y Moravia, y la última ciudad que visité desde la que volví a Roma, fue Ostrava, en Moravia. Creo que la importancia de este viaje se comprende a la luz del documento "Tertio millennio adveniente". La Iglesia, mientras se prepara para el jubileo del año 2000, vuelve en cierto sentido a los diferentes caminos por los que Cristo entró en la vida de la gran familia humana, en los diversos continentes y en cada uno de los países. Uno de esos caminos para la Europa central pasa, de modo particular, por la Puerta de Moravia. Allí el cristianismo llegó muy pronto, echando raíces en el siglo noveno entre los eslavos del reino de la gran Moravia. Fue precisamente el príncipe de ese Estado quien invitó a los santos Cirilo y Metodio, que procedían de Bizancio, a evangelizar a su pueblo. Esa evangelización ha producido frutos especialmente en el territorio en que se realizó la visita papal. Centro de la visita que pude llevar a cabo en 1990 después de la caída del régimen comunista, fue la ciudad de Velehrad en Moravia, en el territorio de la actual archidiócesis de Olomouc. Ogunu, OMV1 ABSTRACT Although expressed in different manner, the Consecrated life is often presented, essentially, as a beautiful and precious treasure, a calling and way of life rooted in our baptismal vocation and founded on the Triune God. The desire of those who are called is to follow Jesus Christ more closely by loving and serving God and fellow human persons, according to the spirit and charism of the Founder/Foundress. In order to faithfully achieve this aim, the Institutes of Consecrated life endeavour to form or educate is members. The Church has constantly showed concern and encouraged the formation of consecrated persons. She offers guidelines and directives in response to new questions and emerging difficulties, and changing situations both in the Church and in society. The article presents some orientations of the Church and, then, the challenges that face formation in religious life in an African country (Nigeria) today. Notwithstanding the real challenges, the formation in consecrated life is a call to commitment and witness to Christ in the church and in the world today. The Holy See ADDRESS OF JOHN PAUL II TO THE PLENARY ASSEMBLY OF THE CONGREGATION FOR THE EVANGELIZATION OF PEOPLES Saturday, 24 May 2003 Your Eminences, Venerable Brothers in the Episcopate and in the Priesthood, Dear Brothers and Sisters, 1. I welcome and greet with affection each one of you who are taking part in the Plenary Assembly of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. I greet first of all Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, Prefect of your Congregation; I am grateful to him for the words he has addressed to me on your behalf. With him, I greet the Secretaries, the Undersecretary and the collaborators of the Dicastery; I greet the Cardinals, Bishops, men and women Religious and all who are present. During the work of the Plenary Meeting, you have addressed an important aspect of the Church's mission: "Formation in the mission lands", with reference to the priests, seminarians, Religious, catechists, and lay people involved in pastoral activities. This topic deserves your full attention. 2. The urgent need to train apostles for the new evangelization was reasserted by the Second Vatican Council as well as by the Synods of Bishops held in recent years. The work of the Synodal Assemblies has resulted in important Apostolic Exhortations, of which I will only mention Pastores Dabo Vobis, Vita Consecrata, Catechesi Tradendae and Christifideles Laici. The recently founded Ecclesial Communities are rapidly expanding. Precisely because weaknesses and difficulties in their development process have sometimes been identified, it appears urgently necessary to insist on the formation of well-qualified pastoral workers by means of systematic programmes, adapted to the needs of the present time and attentive to "inculturating" the Gospel in the different settings. -

The Catholic Church in the Czech Republic Dear Readers, The publication on the Ro- man Catholic Church which you are holding in your hands may strike you as history that belongs in a museum. How- ever, if you leaf through it and look around our beauti- ful country, you may discover that it belongs to the present as well. Many changes have taken place. The history of the Church in this country is also the history of this nation. And the history of the nation, of the country’s inhabitants, always has been and still is the history of the Church. The Church’s mission is to serve mankind, and we want to fulfil Jesus’s call: “I did not come to be served but to serve.” The beautiful and unique pastoral constitution of Vatican Coun- cil II, the document “Joy and Hope” begins with the words: “The joys and the hopes, the grief and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the grief and anxieties of the followers of Christ.” This is the task that hundreds of thousands of men and women in this country strive to carry out. According to expert statistical estimates, approximately three million Roman Catholics live in our country along with almost twenty thousand of our Eastern broth- ers and sisters in the Greek Catholic Church, with whom we are in full communion. There are an additional million Christians who belong to a variety of other Churches. Ecumenical cooperation, which was strengthened by decades of persecution and bullying of the Church, is flourishing remarkably in this country. -

ABSTRACT The encyclicals and speeches of Pope John Paul II placed solidarity at the very center of the Catholic social tradition and contemporary Christian ethics. This disserta- tion analyzes the historical development of solidarity in the Church’s encyclical tradition, and then offers an examination and comparison of the unique contributions of John Paul II and the Jesuit theologian Jon Sobrino to contemporary understandings of solidarity. Ultimately, I argue that understanding solidarity as spiritual exercise integrates the wis- dom of John Paul II’s conception of solidarity as the virtue for an interdependent world with Sobrino’s insights on the ethical implications of Christian spirituality, orthopraxis, and a commitment to communal liberation. -

ENCYCLICAL LETTER UT UNUM SINT OF THE SUPREME PONTIFF JOHN PAUL II ON COMMITMENT TO ECUMENISM 25 May 1995 INTRODUCTION 1. Ut unum sint! The call for Christian unity made by the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council with such impassioned commitment is finding an ever greater echo in the hearts of believers, especially as the Year 2000 approaches, a year which Christians will celebrate as a sacred Jubilee, the commemoration of the Incarnation of the Son of God, who became man in order to save humanity. The courageous witness of so many martyrs of our century, including members of Churches and Ecclesial Communities not in full communion with the Catholic Church, gives new vigor to the Council’s call and reminds us of our duty to listen to and put into practice its exhortation. These brothers and sisters of ours, united in the selfless offering of their lives for the Kingdom of God, are the most powerful proof that every factor of division can be transcended and overcome in the total gift of self for the sake of the Gospel. Christ calls all his disciples to unity. My earnest desire is to renew this call today, to propose it once more with determination, repeating what I said at the Roman Coliseum on Good Friday 1994, at the end of the meditation on the Via Crucis prepared by my Venerable Brother Bartholomew, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. There I stated that believers in Christ, united in following in the footsteps of the martyrs, cannot remain divided. If they wish truly and effectively to oppose the world’s tendency to reduce to powerlessness the Mystery of Redemption, they must profess together the same truth about the Cross.1 The Cross! An anti-Christian outlook seeks to minimize the Cross, to empty it of its meaning, and to deny that in it man has the source of his new life. -
