Serving India’s Rural Supermarket RURAL MARKETS HAVE EMERGED AS AN IMPORTANT GROWTH ENGINE IN INDIA’S CONSUMPTION STORY. Housing some 70% of India’s 1.2 billion population, the hinterland can be best termed as a vast ‘supermarket’ that is ushering in a new impetus into India’s overall economic progress. Thrust on rural development and infrastructure; an increased rural investment scenario; farm-loan waivers and growing disposable income in the pockets of Rural Indians - are all key factors in stimulating overall rural consumption. As demand for everyday products gains momentum in the hinterland, rural consumers are climbing up the value chain, with the result that incremental consumption expenditure in rural India is signifi cantly ahead of urban India. In fact, with an increase in income and awareness levels, consumption in rural India is converging with the larger, more affl uent towns. MOREOVER, RURAL CONSUMERS ARE EXHIBITING AN INCREASED PROPENSITY TO SPEND ON HIGH- QUALITY BRANDED PRODUCTS THAT ARE BACKED BY STRONG VALUES, SIGNALING CONTINUED BUOYANCY IN INDIA’S CONSUMPTION STORY. As a leading FMCG player with a wide portfolio of brands, robust distribution network and deep-rooted understanding of consumer behavior, Dabur India is well-positioned to penetrate the immense rural supermarket. WE ARE TAKING A FRESH LOOK AT OUR RURAL MARKETING STRATEGIES; STRENGTHENING OUR DISTRIBUTION REACH; SHARPENING OUR MARKETING TOOLS; AND CHARTING OUT FRESH COMMUNICATION PLANS. We intend to take continuous proactive measures for optimising our portfolio, products and channels. We aim to synchronise this goal with our broader aim of connecting with the rural masses through affordable price points and relevant product offerings.

The positioning was unclear to the public. So, we decided to embark on a brand recast to identify brands based on their product properties. This essentially means that Dabur is shedding its age-old umbrella brand strategy, where its entire product portfolio was under one roof. - Sunil Duggal, CEO, Dabur India Limited in 20041. • Brand Positioning.Doc.Docx
Brand Positioning Introduction In marketing terms, there is no such thing as a product or service that exists by itself in space, independent of the consumer. For a product to exist, it must find a place in an individual consumer's perception of the world of products around him or her. And this perception is subjective, governed by the individual consumer's values, beliefs, needs, experience and environment. The cognitive map of the individual is not a photographic repre sentation of the physical world...Every perceiver is, as it were, to some degree a non-representational artist, painting a picture of the world that expresses his individual view of reality. This is the core thought behind brand positioning - the idea that each brand (if at all noticed) occupies a particular point or space in the individual consumer's mind, a point that is determined by that consumer's perception of the brand in question and in its relation to other brands. The spatial distance between the points in that consumer's mind reflects the subject's perception of similarity or dissimilarity between products and brands. The everyday phrase, 'poles apart', is a simple example of how consumers position products in their mind; for example, an electric shaver vs. a razor. In the section entitled 'Product and Brand Positioning' in his book, Marketing Management, Prof. Philip Kotler says: ―Once the core product concept is chosen, it defines the character of the product space in which the new product has to be positioned. An instant breakfast drink means that this product will compete against bacon and eggs, breakfast cereals, coffee and pastry, and other break fast alternatives...‖ Assume that the instant breakfast drink concept is selected.
