It was hosted by Michel Sintzoff and Charles Pecheur of the Université catholique de Louvain, and attended by - 1 - 1 Tab13b_TC-2 report.doc 11 members and 12 observers, of which 5 were local observers. There were 22 technical presentations. The informal minutes, including abstracts of most of the talks and links to on-line working documents, are available on web page www.comlab.ox.ac.uk/oucl/work/jeremy.gibbons/wg21/meeting62/minutes.html

3. Next meetings Meeting #63: 10 − 14 September 2007, Kyoto, Japan. 4. Recent events: None 5. Upcoming event: None 6. Status of the group, general points, other activities The possibility of a joint WG2.1/WG2.8/WG2.11 Working Conference on Domain-Specific Languages, to be held in the middle of 2008, is being explored.

WG2.2 Report submitted by Davide Sangiorgi The last meeting of IFIP WG 2.2 took place during the period 11—13 September 2006 in Udine, Italy. It was a special meeting, as it celebrated the 40th Anniversary Meeting of the WG. The meeting was organized by our member Furio Honsell with the help of Marino Miculan, at the University of Udine. Both the organization and the talks were excellent. Furio Honsell, presently rector of the University of Udine, has provided funding for the meeting.

Five invited speakers retraced the development of the ideas at various stages in the history of semantics and implementation or expressed a position on what concepts are central to this field. These talks were given by Hans Langmaack, Gordon Plotkin, Dana Scott, Leslie Lamport, and Manfred Paul.

Three more invited talks were given by members of WG2.2. For the rest, the program comprised 17 presentations by members of the group. These invited talks and ordinary presentations also contributed to a general perspective of the field by surveying wide areas of work or by reporting on works accomplished over long periods.

For some titles and abstracts of presentations, see http://www.cs.unibo.it/~sangio/IFIP/talks_Udine06.html

24 out of 29 members were present at the meeting: Given the exceptional event, in this case participation to the meeting was open. We therefore had a number of external participants (overall about 80 people registered)

The Chairman proposed the nomination of a vice-chairman, as exists in several other working groups, and suggested for this I. Walukiewicz (F). This proposal was approved by the WG, during its administrative sessions.

The WG has been asked by the organizers of the International Conference FSEN'07 (Fundamentals of Software Engineering, April 17-19, 2007) to be held in Teheran, to grant the co-sponsorship of the IFIP WG2.2 to this conference. The WG has accepted; the co-sponsorship has been approved by IFIP TC2. The WG involvement in the conferences concerns PC members, invited speakers, and tutorial sessions.

Planned events and activities: The next meeting of the WG will take place in Nancy, France, in September. The precise dates are still under discussion. It will be organised by our member Stephan Merz.

- 2 - 2 Tab13b_TC-2 report.doc The WG has co-sponsorship for the conference FSEN (Fundamentals of Software Engineering)to be held in Teheran, April 17-19, 2007, as discussed above.

WG2.3 Report submitted by Pamela Zave Meeting #46 took place in Sydney, Australia, 8-12 January 2007. The host was Prof. Annabelle McIver of Macquarie University. Facilities for the meeting were graciously provided by the University of Sydney. There were 18 participants, including 11 members and 7 observers. 5 other members had originally planned to attend, but were forced by circumstances to revise their plans. No observers were eligible for membership at this meeting. Discussion topics and abstracts are available on the Web site: http://research.microsoft.com/~leino/IFIP-WG2.3/

We regret to note the passing of long-time member Douglas Ross.

The International Conference on Tests and Proofs was held in Zurich, Switzerland, 12-14 February 2007. This event was organized by member Bertrand Meyer, endorsed by WG 2.3, and sponsored by IFIP. For further information see: http://tap.ethz.ch/

Meeting #47 will be held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 8-12 October 2007. The host will be Robert Balzer of Teknowledge.

WG2.4 Report submitted by Erhard Ploedereder Since the report to TC2 at its Como meeting, WG 2.4 met in Glasgow (UK) for a week-long meeting (July 16-21). There were 21 attendees, among them 4 members. While a slight improvement over the previous meeting, attendance levels are still not back to our normal number of about 30 participants. Nevertheless discussions of the presentations were lively and focused mostly on language capabilities and their implementation.

Welf Löwe, Vaxjö University, Sweden, was proposed as a new member.

Our next meeting is scheduled at the UCLA conference center at Lake Arrowhead, California, May 6-11, 2007. For the Lake Arrowhead meeting an increased number of invitations were sent out to prospective new members. This time they were personally contacted by members to familiarize them with the group and the meaning of the invitation extended to them. Early registration results indicate that the next meeting will have 30 participants or more.

We experienced a veritable avalanche of offers to host upcoming meetings. A place in Northern Italy, two locations in Germany, offers from Sweden, Qatar, USA, Canada and South Africa provide a wealth of opportunities to chose from. Following traditions, the next meeting will be either in Europe or some “remote” country.

4th IFIP WG2.4 Summer School, South Africa 26-30 March 2007. Attendance stands at 88, from 9 African countries, the Netherlands and Italy. The School is being run by Judith Bishop through the University of Pretoria under the auspices of WG2.4. IFIP has not provided any funding this time. Scholarships for students and airfares for speakers have been the responsibility of Microsoft Research and local Research organizations. There is no profit sharing with IFIP, but the day fee at 2 euros per day will be paid to IFIP.

Membership

The Working Group currently has 34 full members representing 13 countries. The Working Group has an additional 12 affiliate members. (Affiliates are former WG 2.5 full members who are interested in working group activities, but are unable to regularly attend meetings or commit large amount of time to working group projects. They maintain email contact, and attend Working Group meetings when possible. They are considered members of the Working Group by IFIP.) The newest member of WG 2.5 is Professor Shigeo Kawata Utsunomiya University Japan He was approved by WG 2.5 in July 2006.

Aims and Scope

WG 2.5 recently re-evaluated its statement of aims and scope with an eye to updating its viewpoint in light of current trends in the field. The result of this process was a re-affirmation of the basic aim of the group, i.e., to improve the quality of scientific computation by promoting the development and availability of sound numerical software. However, it was felt that a re-statement and clarification of the objectives that lie within its scope was needed. In July 2006, the group approved a modified scope statement, which is included in Appendix 1 of this report. An important feature of this new statement is an expanded (one-page) rationale for each of the topic areas identified in the scope statement. This rationale is also attached.

Business Meetings

The working group holds yearly meetings. These are typically comprised of a two-day business meeting and an associated two-day workshop. The workshop provides an opportunity for the working group to interact with researchers in the local region on issues of mutual interest. The workshops are usually informal. The Working Group holds Working Conferences in association with some of its meetings. The most recent WG 2.5 meeting was held in conjunction with a Working Conference. The most recent and planned meetings are given in the table below.

1. WG 2.5 Working Conference 9

Working Group 2.5 organized an IFIP Working Conference on Grid-Based Problem Solving Environments: Implications for Development and Deployment of Numerical Software which was held July 17-21, 2006 in Prescott, Arizona, USA. The web site for the conference is http://www.woco9.org/. In this context, the phrase “Grid-Based Problem Solving Environments” is synonymous with “science gateways” or “science portals”, nomenclature introduced recently by the grid community. The conference was designed to bring together members of four communities: o users of both grid-based and traditional problem solving environments; o developers of both grid-based and traditional problem solving environments; o developers of grid infrastructure; and o developers of numerical software. The use of the Internet to bring together providers and users of computational resources has become commonplace. Web-based services such as NetSolve (for linear algebra) and NEOS (for nonlinear and optimization problems) have demonstrated the potential of grid-based problem solving environments from the numerical software perspective. Domain specific PSEs, such as Cactus (developed for numerical relativity) and PYRE (developed for shock physics), have been applied outside their original discipline to generate new PSEs and are being extended to exploit grid technology. Likewise, many tools exist for making a service available. However, there is more to making use of a grid-based service than simply knowing its web address. Does the service work reliably? What are its limitations? Can it be combined with other services? There are also opportunities for improving the ability of applications to use the best numerical software, for example, by simplifying the acquisition and use of high-quality numerical software. The development of numerical software can benefit from the experience of the scientific and engineering communities using and developing new grid-based PSEs, for example, defining interfaces more appropriate for integrating numerical software into grid-oriented applications and exploiting test sets and tools for comparing different methods. Issues considered by this working conference included: o accuracy contracts and software services; o standards for problem specification; o service models for the use of numerical software; o using the grid to link numerical and other services together; o experiences with web-based numerical services; o application-oriented numerical interfaces such as web portals; o software deployment issues including updates and bug fixes; o large data (including data security) and grid-based numerical software; o grid-based services as an alternative to deployment; and o evaluation and comparison of both production and research software. This conference was built upon the experience and insights gained during past working conferences organized by WG2.5, in particular, WoCo4: Problem Solving Environments for Scientific Computing, WoCo6: Programming Environments for High-Level Scientific Problem Solving, and WoCo8: Software Architectures for Scientific Computing Applications. The Working Conference was sponsored IFIP and the Center for Advanced Computing Research at the California Institute of Technology in cooperation with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Additional financial support was obtained from Hewlett-Packard, Intel and NAG. The organizational structure for the working conference was as follows.

2. WG 2.5 Workshop on Software Issues in Computational Science and Engineering

The next WG 2.5 business meeting will be held at the University of Uppsala, Sweden, on August 13-14, 2007. In association with this meeting, WG 2.5 will co-host a workshop on the topic of Software Issues in Computational Science and Engineering. This is one of a series of informal “local” workshops held in conjunction with the yearly WG 2.5 business meetings. These workshops provide a venue for WG 2.5 members to interact with researchers and practitioners in the local region who are interested in numerical software. The workshop is being organized by WG 2.5 Vice-Chair Michael Thuné (University of Uppsala). The web site for the meeting can be found at http://www.it.uu.se/research/conf/SCSE07.

3. Minisymposium at the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics

WG 2.5 members Ronald Boisvert and Brian Ford have organized a minisymposium for the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) to be held in Zurich, July 16-20, 2007. Entitled “Recent Advances in Software Tools for Scientific Computing,” the minisymposium will feature eight technical talks on subjects of interest to WG 2.5, four of which will be presented by active WG 2.5 members. The event will be dedicated to James C. T. Pool, a long-time member of WG 2.5 who retired from the California Institute of Technology last year.

WG2.6 Report submitted by Tiziana Catarci Changes to Membership and Responsibilities

In the Montpellier meeting (Nov. 3, 2006), Thomas Risse has been approved by the WG 2.6 as new member. Working Group Meetings One meeting was held in Montpellier, France, November 3, 2006, in conjunction with the OTM Federated Event (http://www.cs.rmit.edu.au/fedconf/). The number of participants to the meeting was 19. The meeting discussed future research directions, the organization of the next group event, and possible funding opportunities within EU FP7.

The next meeting is scheduled for February 23, 2007 in Roma, Italy. WG Conference - 7 - 7 Tab13b_TC-2 report.doc Arantza Illaramendi reported on the last conference of the group held in conjuction with EDBT, whose main numbers are: 14 people attended , 8 accepted papers, 24 submissions. Overall the last conference was not satisfactory and also caused some loss covered by EDBT.

There was a skype call with Marc Scholl, EDBT general chair, in order to discuss the best organization for the next conference. Suggestions included to have a workshop instead of a conference and one session for members of the group in addition to open sessions. Then, there was a discussion on the topics of the workshop. There was a bottom-up convergence to a unifying topic, namely data and service integration. The name of the workshop was decided as: SDSI: Semantic Data and Service Integration: theory and applications. It was decided to set up a proposal for a workshop to be held in conjunction with some major database conference, e.g. VLDB. The group will finalize the workshop call during the next meeting in Roma. Publications During the past year, the working group asked Karl Aberer and Philippe Cudre-Mauroux to coordinate a special issue of the Journal on Data Semantics on the theme "Emergent Semantics", which had previously been covered by papers and presentations by the working group. The special issue is now available, JoDS Volume VI, it contains eight peer-reviewed papers (out of 19 original submissions) plus an invited paper “Viewpoints on Emergent Semantics” that summarizes some of the discussions held within the working group.

More information on 2.6 can be found at http://wise.vub.ac.be/ifipwg26.

WG2.8 Report submitted by Simon Peyton-Jones Meetings We have held one meeting since our last report, dated February 2006. This took place in Endicott House, near MIT in Boston, on 16-21 July 2006. The accessible location led to an unusually large number of members attended, 25 in all, together with 11 guests. Our next meeting, scheduled for July 2007, will be in Iceland. Membership We elected no new members at the Endicott House meeting. Officers Simon Peyton Jones remains Chair, with Ralf Hinze as Secretary. Other activities The WG2.8 membership continues to be very active in ACM SIGPLAN (programming languages) with significant participation on the SIGPLAN executive committee, and in the organization of the major conferences (POPL, PLDI, IFCP, OOPLSA). WG2.8 is co-sponsoring a TC2 Working Conference on Domain Specific Languages in mid-2008, organised jointly by WG2.1, WG2.8, and WG2.11. Benjamin Pierce is a member of WG2.8 and well serve as co-chair of the conference.

WG2.9 Report submitted by Bashar Nuseibeh The group continues to meet on an annual basis, in February, for a week long meeting to exchange ideas and present research in progress. In 2006 the group met in Costa Rica (19-24 February 2006) and chose to hold this as a closed meeting with no guests, in order discuss the future governance and plans of the group in a sustained and open discussion throughout the week. This was followed up by a short business meeting later in the year (12th September) in Minneapolis.. The next meeting will be held in Lugano, Switzerland (21-24 February 2007), organsied by Professor Carlo Ghezzi (Milano), and supported by the local university's head of computing, Professor Mehdi Jazayeri. Five guests have been invited as observers and have confirmed their attendance: Professor Manfred Broy (Munich), Dr. Davide Bolchini (Lugano), Dr. Marsha Chechik (Toronto), Dr. Anthony Hall (UK), and Dr.Bjorn Regnell (Sweden).

Some organisational and technical highlights from the previous meetings include:

- A decision and plan to streamline the process of inviting guests and new members. This is now much more explicit and transparent, and the result has been a systematic, documented, and inclusive process of inviting guests, and an open process to consider new members.

- A decision to examine ways of engaging further with the wider RE community. The support of the annual RE conference continues: this year the RE'06 conference selected and presented the Manfred Paul Award for best paper; and IFIP WG2.9 continues to have a visible presence in the conference literature (as a "supporter") of this IEEE sponsored conference. A further form of engagement is the planned organisation of an IFIP WG2.9 summerschool preceding the RE'07 conference in Delhi, India in October 2007. Plans are already underway, with summerschool chairs appointed: - 9 - 9 Tab13b_TC-2 report.doc Professors Dan Berry (Waterloo, Canada) and Bill Robinson (WG2.9 Secretary - Georgia, USA). WG2.9 will of course support the RE'07 conference in India.

- Clear evidence of research benefits to the wider RE community; for example, working with a previous WG2.9 guest (Prof Betty Cheng - Michigan), WG2.9 Vice Chair, Professor Jo Atlee, has produced a "roadmap" of RE which will appear in the ICSE'07 "Future of Software Engineering", and will be presented in Minneapolis, USA, in May 2007. WG2.9 member Professor Axel van Lamsweerde is also in the final stages of writing his book on RE, which is discussed and supported by members of the group. Finally, joint research papers between members of the group and their guests continue to be authored, with topics such as feature-based development, security requirements engineering, automated analysis, adaptive systems development, and composition, all examples of intensive shared interest and activity.

Plans for 2008 activity are still being considered, but Brazil is one serious contender to host the 2008 meeting, and feasibility proposals are being drawn up.

WG2.10 Report submitted by Christine Hofmeister WG 2.10 met in Concord, Massachusetts, USA on October 23-26 2006. Nine members and two guests were present: Neeraj Singhal of Lattix LDM described his company's tool that identifies and categorizes dependencies in source code. John Kemp of Nokia discussed the architectural challenges of developing a web services framework for a mobile environment. Another discussion topic was what future research in software architecture should address, which resulted in several other discussions. One outcome was the plan for a working session on "Software Architecture: The Next Generation". This was then proposed by 2.10 members Jan Bosch, Paul Clements, Rich Hilliard, and Robert Nord to the WICSA 2007 program committee, and the working session was held at WICSA in January 2007 in Mumbai, India.

Also at this meeting the 2.10 members voted to recommend Hans van Vliet and Eoin Woods for membership.

The next 2.10 meeting will tentatively take place near London, although no date has been set yet.

WG2.11 Report submitted by Julia Lawall WG 2.11 met for two days (October 27-28) in Portland, Oregon following the conferences GPCE (Generative Programming and Component Engineering) and OOPSLA (Object-Oriented Programming Systems, Languages, and Applications), both of which are relevant to the working group. Attendance was around 30, with around 20 members and 10 guests. Several of the guests had attended the previous meeting in January as well.

For this meeting, since it was just following several conferences with many talks, we tried for a more discussion oriented format. On the first day there were talks in the morning from the new guests, and then the remainder of the meeting was devoted to discussions in groups. Four discussions topics were planned by the members in advance, and two other topics came up spontaneously in the meeting. The discussion sessions were three hours in length, and included both a variety of short presentations and group discussions, permitting to go into the topics in some depth. Overall, the discussion format was found to be very successful.

The next meeting will be August 20-22 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Guests who participated in the October meeting will be reinvited as well as some new ones. As this meeting is not associated with a conference, we will mainly go back to the format of individual presentations, to allow members to

- 10 - 10 Tab13b_TC-2 report.doc present their current work. Building on the success of the October meeting, however, we will also organize some discussion sessions on the same model.
