PAGE 2 Te Awamutu Courier, Thursday, April 28, 2005 Brian Tamaki blasts ‘devil’s lies’ Charismatic, controversial church leader returns to home town By Grant Johnston Brian Tamaki went back to his roots on Sunday night to share his views on ‘the demonic agenda that wants to put the church out of business’. He spoke to a gathering of 350 packed into soul.purpose.church in Te Awamutu. Pastor Tamaki is soon to be ordained as Bishop by his massive South Auckland based Destiny Church. He was born in Te Awamutu and he and his wife Hannah helped plant Rosetown Community Church when he returned to begin his ministry in the mid-80s (a fore- runner to soul.purpose). He blasted the culture of the ‘silent pul- pit’ which he said was aimed at gagging views on important issues like abortion and prostitution. He said it was one of the ‘devil’s lies’ that the church should stay quiet. Next month an ‘absolute abstinence stand’ will see 1000 youth take vows at South Auckland’s Destiny Church not to have sex before marriage. “It’s about giving people the choice and saying ‘I’ve got something that works’.” Another ‘lie’ was that the church should stay small. “What frightened the politicians (about the Enough is Enough march) was that they saw an army of disciplined people.” Another lie was that the church should not have money and should stay separate from everything else in the world and stay PRAYER FOR : Pastor Brian Tamaki leads a prayer for the leaders of Te Awamutu’s Soul.purpose, New Life and Liberty spiritual. The huge gathering on Sunday night was reminis- cent of the church in its heyday. And joint initiatives with soul.purpose by two other churches will see meetings attracting those sort of numbers on a more regular basis again. SOLD Liberty Fellowship has been sharing facilities with soul.purpose for some time, while New Life Church will be doing the same from the end of next month. Pictured above is the land 118TC032-05 requirement plan for the realignment provided by consultants Opus International Consultants.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE By Steve Searle of Te Awamutu Bible Chapel Young and old gathered in the fi rst light of April 25 to honour the sacrifi ce of previous generations. The Anzac Dawn Parade is now more than a memorial service to those 2,712 soldiers who died while trying to secure a beachhead at Gallipoli 90 years ago, and the fallen in all wars. It’s also become a time to pause and refl ect on where we stand as a nation. The Anzac force was comprised of Pakeha, Maori, Nuiean, Australian and other brothers-in- arms who stood their ground together and for each other. We need to refl ect on that. The soldiers’ stories were of sacrifi ce, duty, mate- ship, integrity, discipline and honour. We shouldn’t forget that either. At home thousands gathered at memorial ceno- taphs “lest we forget”. And above Anzac Cove un- der an Aegean sky, hundreds of mostly young New Zealanders and Australians slept in the open so they could rise to stand in the silence of dawn and to feel the strength and pride in that company. So today, what is my generation’s legacy for those following? What will our children remember us for ? When they stand with their children at their side, some may consider that while we remem- bered on Anzac Day the 18,166 Kiwi soldiers killed during the whole course of World War 1, we had barely blinked at the similar number of abortions sanctioned year after year during our time. They might also remember our muted accept- ance of homosexual marriage (or civil union) and prostitution as lawful practices, and would have learned from us that the broadcast of amoral be- haviour, violent language and violent deeds into their homes was OK when screened after 8.30pm as ‘adult entertainment’. They may refl ect on the moral ground becoming a slippery slope and protests against any individu- al’s deviance being denounced as discriminatory under the United Nations blah-blah. On such matters, how would our Anzac grand- parents see us today? They had saluted a fl ag and stood respectfully for a national anthem that today some criticise as being not good enough for their allegiance. Each generation makes mistakes, for sure, but in our grandparents’ time there were certain life principles, mostly Bible-based, that had seen them through the struggle and heart-break of two world wars and a severe economic depression in between. We need their example, beyond Anzac, where a person’s words and deeds are more carefully meas- ured against the absolute truths found in the Bible – for our children’s sake.
