The Bathafarn estate passed from the Thelwalls following the marriage of Mary Thelwall with Robert Price, the second son of Roger Price of Rhiwlas, Merioneth. Their heir was Thelwall Price who died without issue in around 1767 and who bequeathed the estate to his cousin Richard Price who assumed the name of Thelwall. Another branch of the Thelwall family acquired the Nantclwyd estate. This estate also passed from the family following the marriage of the heiress, Martha, with Andrew Kenrick of Woore Manor, Shropshire. How, or when, the Crosse family acquired the estates is not revealed in the archive. OSWALD ROAD, OSWESTRY, 1878. PREFACE F all the works which have been written relating to the general or family history O of North Wales, none have been for centuries more esteemed than the History of the Gwydir Family. The Hon. Daines Barrington, in his preface to his first edition of the work, published in 1770, has well said, "The MS. hath, for above.a cent~ry, been so prized in North Wales, that many in those parts have thought it worth while to make fair and complete transcripts of it." Of these transcripts the earliest known to exist is one in the Library at Brogyntyn. It was probably written within 45 years of the death of the author; but besides that, it contains a great number of notes and additions of nearly the same date, which have never yet appeared in print. The History of the Gwydir Family has been thrice published. The first editiun, edited by the Hon. Daines Barrington, issued from the press in 1770. The second was published in Mr.

The Family of William Penn Founder of Pennsylvania Ancestry and Descendants BY HOWARD M. JENKINS AVTBOll OF VOLVMS OHS, 11.DIO&IAL IIISTO&Y OF PBILADELPBIA, rrc., rrc. 1899 PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, U.S. A. THE AUTHOR LONDON, ENGLAND HEADLEY BROTHERS, 14, BISHOPSGATE WITHOUT Copyright, 1899, by HowARD M. J ENXINs. / C • /(',' ,., ''./t! /it/- / ",/// '// ?1. ; I/ 1 /It ,-{~i/,//, ', / / ';////(/(, ·I ; •/./ I / . ,, ,,: ·/ PREFACE. ~HE occasion of this volume is substantially, per '-...J.... haps sufficiently, stated in the opening of the first chapter. To the explanation there given a few particulars may be added. There has always been, the author believes, a strong and very reasonable interest in the personality of William Penn, as the Founder of Penn sylvania, and as a worthy figure in the world's history, and some of this interest attaches to the line of those who have descended from him. The volume here prepared assumes simply to deal with this Family subject. It is not a history nor a biography. In one or two places, perhaps, the record has been permitted an extension which could not be entirely justified by the pian of the work, but excusing this by the special interest of the subject at those points, the author thinks the book has been fairly confined to its original and legitimate plan. Some of the family letters, very possibly, may be re garded as containing details too trivial for printing. The view adopted as to such matters has been that the account is thus made more precise and distinct, and is invested with human interest. Indeed, a book of this character must in part find its justification as being a study, a picture, of social conditions fn the p~rio~ to which it belongs, and such a study or picture is obviously of little value unless it is presented with lines sufficiently distinct, and details sufficiently definite, to make a positive impression on the mind.

Volume formerly belonging to Lord Berwick, at Attingham House, near Shrewsbury, and afterwards in the possession of Sir THOMAS PHILLIPPS, Baronet, AT MIDDLEHILL, WORCESTERSHIRE. JL 222/064 THE MONTGOMERYSHIRE PEDIGREES, THE "VISITATIONS OF WALES", by LEWIS DWNN. The project, commenced in 1884, for printing these pedigrees for the use of the Members of the Powys-land Club is now carried out. The high authority of Lewis Dwnn's Visitations, and the extreme rarity and costliness of the work in which they were first printed by the Welsh Manuscript Society in 1846, rendered it desirable that the Montgomeryshire portion of such Visitations should be placed in the hands of the Members. This has been done, with- out extra cost, as part of the publications of the Club. One hundred extra copies have been printed before the type was distributed, which are intended to be offered to Members of the Club in the first instance. Any not taken by them will be offered for sale to the public. INTRODUCTION. To aid the memory in cherishing and perpetuating the record of what is honourable and of good report in families, has been pro- nounced "the science of fools with long memories." If wisdom were always associated with a short or tarnished one, we might accept such a dictum; but, as this is not so, we may safely refer else- where for a more truthful definition of so well-abused and mis- represented a study as genealogy.

  • Chapter V Educational Provision in Wales Part
CHAPTER V EDUCATIONAL PROVISION IN WALES PART (i) : SCHOOLS In medieval Wales it was the Church which assumed the greatest responsibility for schooling, bardic schools and possibly the households of the Welsh lords being also centres of learning. The English universities, and to a lesser extent, the continental universities and the inns of court, provided further or higher 1 education for the ablest talents of Wales. In England, by the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, lay involvement in educati4n increased, as the needs of the Crown, the aristocracy and the towns expanded, and this was also faintly apparent in as scattered and 2 rural a society as Wales. The revival of classical learning emphasised anew the educational qualities required of administrators and all useful members of the state and which were also to be expected of gentlemen. At a time of social change, in Wales as in England, education became a 3 means of asserting and of reinforcing social distinctions. Neither the schools nor the universities were particularly suited 4 to the task of preparing young gentlemen. The newer grammar schools tried tEadapt, and there were a few signs that the universities and the inns of court, though still largely institutions of professional instruction, made some concessions towards providing a more general and 5 popular education. The essential conservatism of these places meant 6 that they were not in the van of intellectual progress. Rather, they were places for disseminating received and accepted truths intermixed with north European humanism and religious ideology, giving force to 333. 7 the ideal of wise and moral service and leadership.

WALES AND THE WARS OF THE ROSES CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS C. F. CLAY, Manager ILcinfcott: FETTER LANE, E.C. EBmburgfj: 100 PRINCES STREET §& : WALES AND THE WARS OF THE ROSES BY HOWELL T. EVANS, M.A. St John's College, Cambridge Cambridge at the University Press 1915 : £ V*. ©amtrrtrge PRINTED BY JOHN CLAY, M.A. AT THE UNIVERSITY PRESS PREFACE AS its title suggests, the present volume is an attempt to ** examine the struggle between Lancaster and York from the standpoint of Wales and the Marches. Contemporary chroniclers give us vague and fragmentary reports of what happened there, though supplementary sources of informa- tion enable us to piece together a fairly consecutive and intelligible story. From the first battle of St Albans to the accession of Edward IV the centre of gravity of the military situation was in the Marches : Ludlow was the chief seat of the duke of York, and the vast Mortimer estates in mid-Wales his favourite recruiting ground. It was here that he experienced his first serious reverse—at Ludford Bridge; it was here, too, that his son Edward, earl of March, won his way to the throne—at Mortimer's Cross. Further, Henry Tudor landed at Milford Haven, and with a predominantly Welsh army defeated Richard III at Bosworth. For these reasons alone unique interest attaches to Wales and the Marches in this thirty years' war; and it is to be hoped that the investigation will throw some light on much that has hitherto remained obscure. 331684 vi PREFACE I have ventured to use contemporary Welsh poets as authorities ; this has made it necessary to include a chapter on their value as historical evidence.
