Gabrielli All rights reserved 2014 iii ABSTRACT SOLIDARITY MEDIATION IN THE FRENCH STREAM OF MYSTICAL BODY OF CHRIST THEOLOGY Name: Gabrielli, Timothy R. University of Dayton Advisor: William L. Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream. -

Capizzi, Ph.D. Vatican II’s Declaration on Religious Liberty, Dignitatis humanae (DH), poses the problem of development in Catholic moral and social doctrine. This problem is threefold, consisting in properly understanding the meaning of pre-conciliar magisterial teaching on religious liberty, the meaning of DH itself, and the Declaration’s implications for how social doctrine develops. A survey of recent scholarship reveals that scholars attend to the first two elements in contradictory ways, and that their accounts of doctrinal development are vague. The dissertation then proceeds to the threefold problematic. Chapter two outlines the general parameters of doctrinal development. The third chapter gives an interpretation of the pre- conciliar teaching from Pius IX to John XXIII. To better determine the meaning of DH, the fourth chapter examines the Declaration’s drafts and the official explanatory speeches (relationes) contained in Vatican II’s Acta synodalia. The fifth chapter discusses how experience may contribute to doctrinal development and proposes an explanation for how the doctrine on religious liberty changed, drawing upon the work of Jacques Maritain and Basile Valuet. -

TALAR The historiography of Modernism has concentrated on the doctrinal issues raised by partisans of reform and their condemnation, to the relative neglect of social and political aspects. Where such connec- tions have been made the linkage has often been extrinsic: those involved in social and political reform subscribed to theses articu- lated by historical critics and critical philosophers. The connections, however, run deeper, reaching into issues surrounding authority and autonomy, ecclesiastical control of not only Catholic intellectual life but also Catholic political and social activity. This article revisits the Oath against Modernism and brings these connections into sharper resolution. “The atmosphere created by Modernism is far from being completely dissipated.”1 T MAY WELL HAVE BEEN THE CASE, given the defects of human nature Iand the effects of original sin, that ecclesiastics on more than one occa- sion violated the second commandment when they considered the effects of Roman Catholic Modernism. The reference to the motu proprio Sacrorum antistitum in my subtitle, however, indicates that a different kind of swear- ing is of interest here. As its centerpiece, the motu proprio promulgated an Oath against Modernism, prefaced by the republication, textually, of the final, disciplinary section of the antimodernist encyclical, Pascendi dominici gregis. Following the oath was an instruction originally addressed in 1894 to the bishops of Italy and to the superiors of religious congregations C. J. T. The name of the “conservative reform Pope” Pius X (1903-1904)1 has been linked to a ‘modernizing’ increase in efficiency of the Roman Curia and of the entire pastoral organisation of the catholic Church – with a decidedly anti-modern tendency.2 With the goal of a Christian restauration of society (Omnia instaurare in Christo; Eph 1:10), the Pope ‘reformed’ especially the church of Italy by implementing a rigorous visitation.3 Not content with the slow workings of the Roman Congregations of Index and Inquisition, Pius X envisioned new ways of control also for the church around the world in his fight against ‘modernism’.The pope’s Encyclical Pascendi dominici gregis,4 which appeared in September 1907, defined ‘modernism’ as the sum of all heresies, a kind of super-heresy of modernity.5 1 Aubert, “Pius X.”. 2 Cf. LOISY'S THEOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT VALENTINE G. MORAN, S.J. Campion College, Victoria, Australia N DECEMBER 1903 the Congregation of the Holy Office added five I works of Alfred Loisy to its Index of Prohibited Books1 and made their author widely known. Up to this time the Abbé Loisy had written most of his articles and books for seminarians and priests, or for scholars engaged in his own field of biblical studies. He was hardly known to the general public of France; even the Catholic public had only recently begun to hear of him. He wrote about the Scriptures and the questions that critics, particularly in Germany, had been asking for over fifty years about their truth, authorship, and inspiration; and his readiness to accept many of the answers which the critics offered had put him squarely among a small group of Catholic scholars in Europe who wanted to adapt the Church's teaching to the contemporary world, to have the Church absorb, not reject, the results of scientific research that had a bearing on religion and especially on Christianity. Loisy's writing had caused trouble with his superiors before 1903. He had been forced to resign his chair of Scripture at the Institut Catholique of Paris in 1893; in 1900 the Archbishop of Paris forbade the Revue du clergé français2 to publish anything he wrote.3 By that time what had reached the clergy, especially the younger priests, was through them beginning to reach the laity, and the publication by Loisy of several radical articles between 1898 and 1903 caused controversy in the Catholic press. -

The history of the Holy See and of the church should be written with absolute truth on the only just and im perishable principle that the historica veritas ought to be supreme, of which we have a divine example in Holy Writ, where the sins, even of Saints, are as openly recorded as the wickedness of sinners.-Leo. XIII. The Roman Catholic organs have already entirely ceased to occupy themselves with the erstwhile all-en grossing subject of Modernism. A profound silence has succeeded profuse inky and verbal dissertations as to the true significance of the term "Modernism," interpreted by some as a sacrilegious attempt to undermine the divine principles of Christianity, whilst to others on the con trary it synthetised the expurgation of these same prin ciples and gave birth to the hope that the resurrection of the ossified organism of the Roman Catholic church was finally at hand. There are those who declare emphatically that Mod ernism is dead, crushed by the iron hand of Pius X, rep resented on one of the medals struck annually in the Vatican, as the hammer of Modernism. The Church-State(s) Problem: The Holy See in the International Theoretical (or theological) Marketplace.* James G. Cussen Abstract Blink, and one might miss the Holy See on the international plane, although it hides in plain sight. With accredited diplomatic representatives from 180 countries, the Holy See enjoys widespread recognition of its perhaps idiosyncratic sovereignty claims. These claims are the jump-off point for this paper; the tangled legal skein they represent notwithstanding, there is no compelling argument to exclude Holy See from the International System. In parsing the well-rehearsed arguments against Holy See sovereignty (i.e. its capacity to conduct international relations at all) we find that, rather, it is more the case of competing meta-narratives with at least equally questionable sets of assumptions. In the blue corner, the historically contingent reality of the 'Westphalian' secular world order; and in the red corner, the historically subversive Kingdom of God. It is a matter of reclaiming the term 'subversive', of course – it is heavily leaden by the 'is-ought' problem. Students of International Relations [IR] are subjected frequently to an account of the development of International Society which situates the 'secular breakwater' in 1648, at the end of the Thirty Years' War in post-Reformation Germany Religion abided, and did not 'resurge' after September 11th 2001. Religion, in fact, had been, and continued to be instrumentalised by the same state-system that claimed to deprecate religion as inherently destabilising. Colonial contexts were rife with Protestant providentialism married to laissez-faire Capitalism after a Weberian fashion. Catholicism, likewise, was instrumentalised against Communism there and in Europe after 1848.
