The address for other correspondence is: Professor G N Foster, 3 Eglinton Terrace, Ayr KA7 1JJ, Scotland, UK – [email protected] 1 LATISSIMUS 45 February 2020 TOWARDS A PHOTOGUIDE FOR THE LARGER BRITISH WATER BEETLES Peter Sutton For some time now, I have been working on a sequel to The Larger Water Beetles of the British Isles (Sutton 2008) in a bid to photograph all of the large and spectacular aquatic Coleoptera of Britain. The trials and tribulations of the search for these fascinating insects are described in a recent article in British Wildlife (Sutton 2017). This article also reveals that some of the medium-sized species of interest, such as those of the genus Rhantus have been included, as have species from other groups, including the raft spider, Dolomedes plantarius (Clerck) and a rare wasp, Chalcis sispes (L.), parasitic on soldierflies (Stratiomyidae), which collectively highlight the conservation importance of some of the very special habitats in which they may be found. (6.3-7.9 mm) to the comparatively large Ilybius ater (12.5 -14.5 mm), known by some in Britain as the Mud Dweller. -

When we hear about the establishment of a new national park or nature reserve we conservationists breathe a sigh of relief and assume that the biological and cultural values of another area are now secured. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily true. Protected areas that appear in government statistics and on maps are not always put in place on the ground. Many of those that do exist face a disheartening array of threats, ranging from the immediate impacts of poaching or illegal logging to subtle effects of air pollution or climate change. -

The Strategy acknowledges the role biodiversity plays, not only in many natural processes, but also in the direct and indirect economic, social, aesthetic, cultural and spiritual benefits that we derive from it. The Strategy also acknowledges that pressures brought about by our own actions and by other factors, such as climate change, have resulted in damage to the biodiversity of Wales and calls for a halt to this loss and for the implementation of measures to bring about a recovery. Local Wildlife Sites provide essential support between and around our internationally and nationally designated nature sites and thus aid our efforts to build a more resilient network for nature in Wales. The Wildlife Sites Guidance derives from the shared knowledge and experience of people and organisations throughout Wales and beyond and provides a common point of reference for the most effective selection of Local Wildlife Sites. I am grateful to the Wales Biodiversity Partnership for developing the Wildlife Sites Guidance. The contribution and co-operation of organisations and individuals across Wales are vital to achieving our biodiversity targets. I hope that you will find the Wildlife Sites Guidance a useful tool in the battle against biodiversity loss and that you will ensure that it is used to its full potential in order to derive maximum benefit for the vitally important and valuable nature in Wales. -

(see page 2) 1 LATISSIMUS 40 October 2017 STRANGE PROTOZOA IN WATER BEETLE HAEMOCOELS Robert Angus (c) (a) (b) (d) (e) Figure Parasites in the haemocoel of Hydrobius rottenbergii Gerhardt One of the stranger findings from my second Chinese trip (see “On and Off the Plateau”, Latissimus 29 23 – 28) was an infestation of small ciliated balls in the haemocoel of a Boreonectes emmerichi Falkenström taken is a somewhat muddy pool near Xinduqao in Sichuan. This pool is shown in Fig 4 on p 25 of Latissimus 29. When I removed the abdomen, in colchicine solution in insect saline (for chromosome preparation) what appeared to a mass of tiny bubbles appeared. My first thought was that I had foolishly opened the beetle in alcoholic fixative, but this was disproved when the “bubbles” began swimming around in a manner characteristic of ciliary locomotion. At the time I was not able to do anything with them, but it was something the like of which I had never seen before. Then, as luck would have it, on Tuesday Max Barclay brought back from the Moscow region of Russia a single living male Hydrobius rottenbergii Gerhardt. This time I injected the beetle with colchicine solution and did not open it up (remove the abdomen) till I had transferred it to ½-isotonic potassium chloride. And at this stage again I was confronted with a mass of the same self-propelled “bubbles”. -

Names on subsequent lines in Roman font are synonyms (including names that appear in Druce’s (1897) or Bowen’s (1964) Flora of Berkshire that are different from the name of the same species in Stace). At the right hand side of the first line is a set of symbols showing - status (if non-native) - growth form - flowering time - trend in abundance (if any) The status is one of three categories: if the plant arrived in Britain after the last ice age without the direct help of humans it is defined as a native, and there is no symbol in this position. If the archaeological or documentary evidence indicates that a plant was brought to Berkshire intentionally of unintentionally by people, then that species is an alien. The alien species are in two categories ● neophytes ○ archaeophytes Neophytes are aliens that were introduced by people in recent times (post-1500 by convention) and for which we typically have precise dates for their first British and first Berkshire records. Neophytes may be naturalized (forming self-replacing populations) or casual (relying on repeated introduction). Archaeophytes are naturalized aliens that were carried about by people in pre-historic times, either intentionally for their utility, or unintentionally as contaminants of crop seeds. Archaeophytes were typically classified as natives in older floras. -
