Roche, PhD DATE: May 20, 2020 Abstract The purpose of this study is to understand how western-developed leadership theories are translated and practiced in the Modern Arab Middle East (MAME). Over the past century the notion of leadership has progressed through phases of understanding, definition, and practice. This evolution continues today and is no longer contained to the academic and practice-oriented institutions of North America and Europe. Through western-styled educational institutions and professional industries, western-developed leadership theories have stretched around the globe, including the MAME. While this is known, what is much less understood is how these theories are adopted and adapted. This study’s objective is to understand what theories of leadership are taught at Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs in the Modern Arab Middle East and how are they applied in local contexts. The research design was qualitative, interpretivist, and exploratory in nature. Data was collected from the MBA programs, their faculty alumni, and by the observations of the researcher. Publicly available documents were gathered by from online sources and during visits to the programs. Interviewed with respondents were conducted both in-person and through phone and digital conversations. Documents and transcripts were catalogued and thematically analyzed with the resulting themes constituting the findings of the study. The first set of findings centers around the question of how leadership is situated as well as what leadership theories are taught and how. It was found that leadership is professed to be highly valued, is broadly defined, and that is taught through traditional educational methods. The second set of findings pertain to what practitioners do with this education. It was found that leadership was spoken of in nine ways: local, regional, and internationally; a changing environment; entrepreneurship; family business; management preferred over leadership, and professional or personal development. Additionally, respondents reported that they experience the concept of leadership to be enigmatic, for a few, and future oriented. This study is hoped to be one of a series to come that considers how western- leadership theory is used in the MAME with an aim that theory may be useful and congruent within local and regional contexts. Naturally, not all agreed with this view. One outspoken contemporary critic of this type of his- toriography as the serial biography of a number of heroes was the phi- losopher and sociologist Herbert Spencer (1820–1903). In the second chapter of his classic The study of sociology he posed the question if there could be such a thing as a social science. At least two groups, he thought, would deny such a possibility. Those who saw the hand of Providence at work with every historical phenomenon were bound to write history as a series of acts of God. As every event was individually produced by a di- vine will which could change at any moment this could not, properly speaking, be an object of science. The second group, »allied« to the first and »equally unprepared to interpret sociological phenomena scientifi- cally«, was made up of those who interpreted the course of civilization as the mere »record of remarkable persons and their doings« (Spencer 1874: 30). Needless to say, what Spencer termed the »great-man-theory« of history was not at all to his taste.

This is one of the reasons why various theories, concepts and topics of leadership are propounded in literature. The current paper examined the trends of leadership publications, the most common topics of leadership, and whether the research topics have followed a coherent progression. A literature review was conducted in order to understand what has been done until now. Using a bibliometric analysis, the current paper summarized 12,235 publications on leadership from the Web of Science database, spanning the period from 1923 to 2019. The findings obtained indicate growing number of leadership publications and the following research topics: leadership management, leadership performance, leadership model, leaders' behaviors, leaders' personalities and team leadership which are related to each other.

    What Almost Was 63 What Almost Was: The Politics of the Contemporary Alternate History Novel Matthew Schneider-Mayerson Between August of 1995 and July of 1996, Speaker of the House of Rep- resentatives Newt Gingrich published two books. One, To Renew America, a folksy Republican polemic cobbled together from Gingrich’s speeches, served as a sequel to Contract with America, the blueprint of the conservative movement that assumed control of Congress in 1995.1 The other was 1945, coauthored with William R. Forstchen, a novel set in an alternate universe.2 In 1945’s divergent timeline, Germany does not declare war on the United States, the Soviet Union is split into fragments, and the United States and Germany have settled into a cold war. Nazi soldiers parachute into the United States to a capture a nuclear facility in Tennessee, but posses of arms-bearing American veterans successfully defend their country. 1945 was representative of the flourishing genre of alternate history novels in all but two ways: an author’s celebrity and its media exposure. Due to Gingrich’s status as the public leader of the conservative renaissance of the mid-1990s, 1945 was widely reviewed in mainstream publications. Treated as a curiosity and ridiculed for its poor literary quality, very few reviewers noted the libertarian themes in 1945, and even fewer placed it in the context of an inchoate literary genre.3 1995 can be considered the birth year of the alternate history novel as a genre. As a conceptual category, the counterfactual, as historians term their what-if narratives, has been pursued in print since classical Greece, if not earlier.

Substantial effort has gone in to classify and clarify different dimensions of active leadership thus, generating considerable organizational and social research of leadership styles and behaviors. Many researchers and practitioners have developed a consensus that the progression of thinking over the years has developed a belief that leadership is a flexible developmental process, with each new piece of research building on and seldom completely disregarding that which was derived before it. Main theories that emerged during 20th century include: the Great Man theory, Trait theory, Process leadership theory, Style and Behavioral theory, Transformational, Transactional and Laissez Faire leadership theory. 1. INTRODUCTION Leadership literature reveals that theories have been refined and modified with passage of time and none of the theory is completely irrelevant. As mentioned earlier, relevance depends on the context in that it is applied. The type of leadership applied in functions entailing very high degree of precision, confidence level, sensitivity, care and technical expertise may be different than in simple management-oriented portfolios, as one that does not fit all heads (Dess, & Picken, 2000).

Leadership still seems to be a popular theme among various disciplines and researchers as it was in the past. A growing body of research has been produced in the leadership field until now. Although increased studies and publications help to build up the leadership theory, leadership theory has not been integrated yet. The theoretical studies related to a specific field in a specific time seem to be useful in related field's advancement. With this rationale in this study, it is aimed to examine the prominent leadership theories in the literature. It is possible to specify the theories examined in the study as the Great Man Theory, Trait Theory, Behavioural Theory and Contingency Theory. So, firstly leadership theories have been divided into two as universal and contingency, and then, the basic assumptions and criticisms of each theory have been presented. Moreover, the findings of the models and researches that make up the theories have been presented in detail. In particular, comments on the criticisms of the theories have been made and a critical point of view has been tried to be reflected. According to findings, Great Man theory and Trait Theory were found to be clearly distinct theories from each other even they were considered together in most part of literature.
