McKay School of Education 5 ABSTRACT A STUDY OF ISLAMIC LEADERSHIP THEORY AND PRACTICE IN K-12 ISLAMIC SCHOOLS IN MICHIGAN Adnan I. Aabed Department of Educational Leadership and Foundations Doctor of Philosophy Effective leadership in Islamic schools involves the incorporation of Islamic principles in the leadership behaviors and practices. With so much literature about the need of Islamic leadership in Islamic institutions in the United States, the problem addressed by the study was whether school principals in Islamic schools exhibited and led these schools according to the principles of Islamic leadership. The study described leadership approaches used by school principals in Islamic schools and how those leadership approaches were influenced by Islamic leadership principles, comparing the Islamic leadership principles derived from the literature with the leadership principles of principals of Islamic schools. A complete population of 12 Islamic school principals in the state of Michigan participated in the study. Data was obtained by individual, face-to-face interviews to get rich descriptive information about their leadership approaches, trait, styles, and principles. 6 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I became aware of the need for this study through my work as a principal in an Islamic school in Gaza Strip in Palestine. My plan was to do the study about the school principals’ leadership approaches and styles in Palestine, but due to the political conflict between the Palestinian and Israeli people, I decided to conduct the study about the Islamic schools in Michigan. I express humble appreciation to Allah (God), the first leader Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and His Companions for their inspiration and blessings that shadowed me and supported me to finish the study. I am grateful to the 12 Islamic school principals in Michigan State who participated in this study. I am also thankful for my committee for their input, and most especially my committee chair, E. Later, in autumn of 1970 the texts of the speeches were edited and prepared for printing. Following the approval of Imām Khomeini, it was printed in Beirut (Lebanon) by Imām Khomeini’s friends, then secretly sent to Iran, while copies of which were simultaneously sent to the revolutionary Muslims in Europe, United States, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. In 1977, before the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the book was published in Iran entitled, A Letter from Imām Mūsāwi Kāshif al-Ghitā and Jihād-i Akbar as its supplement.

    Jung, The writing self InterDisciplines 2 (2010) The writing self Rousseau and the author’s identity Theo Jung Introduction »The History of the world«, the British historian, novelist and literary critic Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) famously wrote in his On heroes, hero- worship and the heroic in history, »is but the Biography of great men« (Carlyle 1840: 34). »They were the leaders of men, these great ones; the model- lers, patterns, and in a wide sense creators, of whatsoever the general mass of men contrived to do or to attain« (3). Naturally, not all agreed with this view. One outspoken contemporary critic of this type of his- toriography as the serial biography of a number of heroes was the phi- losopher and sociologist Herbert Spencer (1820–1903). In the second chapter of his classic The study of sociology he posed the question if there could be such a thing as a social science. At least two groups, he thought, would deny such a possibility. Those who saw the hand of Providence at work with every historical phenomenon were bound to write history as a series of acts of God. As every event was individually produced by a di- vine will which could change at any moment this could not, properly speaking, be an object of science. The second group, »allied« to the first and »equally unprepared to interpret sociological phenomena scientifi- cally«, was made up of those who interpreted the course of civilization as the mere »record of remarkable persons and their doings« (Spencer 1874: 30). Needless to say, what Spencer termed the »great-man-theory« of history was not at all to his taste.

The main contribution of the study is in explaining the role of religion in managing enterprises vis-à-vis the characteristics of an entrepreneur and leader who practices Islam in conducting business. The principles are for leaders and entrepreneurs who are desirous of implementing leadership and entrepreneurship as guided by Islam. Two broad categories are discussed in this article: entrepreneurship and leadership in Islam. Seminal work in this area provides the understanding on the teachings of Islam and its principles for practicing entrepreneurship and leadership. The teachings of Islam have been elucidated from practicing perspectives. This article shows that Islam is a practical religion with entrepreneurship and leadership practice characterized by taqwā (faith), tawakkul (dependence on Allah), efficient and proper use of resources, the use of permissible sources of production and the production of permissible products, sincerity in efforts, trustworthiness in all dealings, concern for societal welfare and the environment, fairness and transparency in all activities, pursuance of knowledge, taking pride in work/ labor, and consultation with stakeholders before decision making. This article suggests that leaders and entrepreneurs who possess the qualities laid down in Islam are expected to combat any managerial challenge and complexity in administering their responsibilities.

Israeli forces continued to use excessive force in the oPt 3 Palestinian civilians, including 2 children, were killed in theWest Bank. 22 Palestinian civilians, including 3 children, were wounded in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Israeli forces continued to open fire at areas along the Gaza Strip borders, but no casualties were reported. Israeli warplanes conducted 2 airstrikes in the central and southern Gaza Strip, but no casualties were reported. Israeli forces conducted 73incursions into Palestinian communities in the West Bank. 47 Palestinian civilians, including 7 children, were arrested. 11 of them, including 4 children, were arrested in occupied Jerusalem. Among the arrested were the PLC member Hatem Qafisha and former Minister Essa al­ Ja’bari. Israeli forces continued to target Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip sea. 4 fishermen, including a child, were arrested and their fishing boat was confiscated. Jewish majority efforts continued in occupied East Jerusalem. A family self­demolished its house in Sour Baher village and more demolition notices were issued against houses in Silwan. The Israeli municipality demolished an underconstruction house in al­Mukaber Mount. A house in Shu’fat village was demolished in favour of establishing Road 21. Settlement activities continued in the West Bank. An agricultural room and a well in Beit Oula village, west of Hebron, were demolished. Allah distinguished her from the male species giving her a separate realm in which she should be dealt with: “And the male is not like the female” (3:36) It is imperative for men to understand this so that they fall into trying to change the woman into something that she is not. Event the Sharee’ah (legislation) of Islam has adjusted some of the religious tenets and obligations to accommodate the feminine nature of the woman such as; One: Placing the financial burden of the family on the shoulders of the man, as Allah says: “The men are the protectors and maintainers of the women because of the strength which Allah has given one of them over the other and because the men spend from their wealth…” (4:34) Two: Alleviating the physical burden of jihad from the women and directing their attention and energy to more important aspects of the religion that are commensurate with her delicate nature.
