Politics & Science in Sweden VA Report 2006:5 Facts about the study Politicians can greatly influence the public’s attitude to science. It matters greatly how politicians view knowledge, science and science’s role in society. An active dialogue between politicians and researchers is essential and the success or otherwise of the interaction between the two groups can have a far-reaching impact. For these reasons, the For me, it isn’t a Swedish organisation Vetenskap & Allmänhet (Public and Science) hockey match that we are playing, but music, has carried out a three-part study into the relationship between poli- and that should be ticians and researchers: played together. 2014 Press release 03 June 2014 Prime Minister's Office REMINDER: German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to Harpsund On Monday and Tuesday 9-10 June, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt will host a high-level meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at Harpsund. The European Union needs to improve job creation and growth now that the EU is gradually recovering from the economic crisis. At the same time, the EU is facing institutional changes with a new European Parliament and a new European Commission taking office in the autumn. Sweden, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands are all reform and growth-oriented countries. As far as Sweden is concerned, it will be important to emphasise structural reforms to boost EU competitiveness, strengthen the Single Market, increase trade relations and promote free movement. These issues will be at the centre of the discussions at Harpsund. Germany, the UK and the Netherlands, like Sweden, are on the World Economic Forum's list of the world's ten most competitive countries. It is natural, therefore, for these countries to come together to compare experiences and discuss EU reform. Programme points: Monday 9 June 18.30 Chancellor Merkel, PM Cameron and PM Rutte arrive at Harpsund; outdoor photo opportunity/door step. Tuesday 10 June 10.30 Joint concluding press conference. Possible further photo opportunities will be announced later. Accreditation is required through the MFA International Press Centre. Applications close on 4 June at 18.00.

  • The Precarious Situation for Wolf Conservation Draws Attention to a Broad Issue of Concern and Establishes the Basis for This Br
To: Prime Minister of Norway Jens Stoltenberg Prime Minister of Sweden Fredrik Reinfeldt Prime Minister of Finland Jyrki Katainen Copy: Minister of the Environment Bård Vegar Solhjell, Norway Minister for the Environment Lena Ek, Sweden Minister of the Environment Ville Niinistö, Finland Minister of Agriculture and Food Trygve Slagsvold Vedum, Norway Minister for Rural Affairs Eskil Erlandsson, Sweden Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Jari Koskinen, Finland European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik. Bern Convention Secretariat 20 November 2012 Dear Prime Ministers Jens Stoltenberg, Fredrik Reinfeldt and Jyrki Katainen 25 environmental NGOs in Norway, Sweden and Finland on behalf of 800.000 members are calling for a more ambitious, responsible and long-term management plan for our shared large carnivore populations, to safeguard their existence in the Fennoscandian ecosystems. We encourage the governments of Norway, Sweden and Finland to establish a joint management platform for large carnivores, beginning with the wolf. The Scandinavian wolf population is suffering from isolation, reduced genetic variation and inbreeding. Sweden has approximately 300 wolves, and the wolf is classified as Endangered on the national Red List. Finland’s wolf population has now been reduced to less than 200 individuals, and is classified as Endangered in the Red List. In Norway the wolf population size is down to 25 individuals in total. Wolves in Norway are listed as Critically Endangered in the Red List. The politically defined population target allows only three annual litters, which is the main reason for the current Red List classification. Furthermore, only around one per cent of Norway’s territory is designated for occupation by wolves.

  • Sweden's Follow-Up of the Platform for Action from the UN's Fourth World
U2014/240/JÄM 27 August 2014 Ministry of Education and Research Sweden Sweden Sweden’s follow-up of the Platform for Action from the UN’s Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing (1995) Covering the period between 2009–2014 1 Section One: Overview and analysis of achievements and challenges since 1995 Achievements since 1995 The goals of gender equality policy have been stable over time. Despite intervening general elections and changes of government, the goals adopted by the Riksdag in 1994 remained in force until 2006. In 2006, the Riksdag adopted a new overarching goal for gender equality policy: Women and men are to have the same power to shape society and their own lives (Govt. Bill 2005/06:155). That goal remains to this day. Four sub goals indicate the direction of the Government’s efforts in gender equality policy: Equal distribution of power and influence; Economic gender equality; Equal distribution of unpaid care and household work; An end to men’s violence against women. In some areas, society has made significant strides forward since 1995. In others, the pace of development has been considerably slower, with major challenges still remaining. The following presents some of the major features of developments since the 1990s. Increased representation by women since the 1990s One area that has shown a distinct positive trend since the 1990s is the distribution of power and influence in elected political assemblies. The 1991 general elections saw the first decline in the proportion of women in the Riksdag since 1929 (from 38 per cent to 33 per cent).

  • Keit Pentus-Rosimannus Lena Ek Ville Niinistö Tom Heap
Keit Pentus-Rosimannus Estonian Minister of the Environment No serious state can simply ignore the subject of climate change – its effect on our quality of life and the world's economy is just too overwhelming. To come up with a reasonable climate strategy, we need to take into account, on the one hand, the most up-to-date and precise scientific information and, on the other, economic and social aspects. I'm very glad that we have been able to bring to Tallinn experts who are absolute leaders in their field: with their help, we are going to tackle this complicated issue and direct the climate debate in Estonia in a more meaningful and science-based direction. Lena Ek Swedish Minister for the Environment Sweden currently chairs the Nordic Council of Ministers. As the chair of the Environment sector and as the Swedish Minister for the Environment I want to emphasize the good results of the Nordic cooperation on environment has led to through the years. In some cases our cooperation has been an international game changer, for example in developing air pollution and chemicals legislation. I highly value the work within the Nordic Council of Ministers on climate issues. Working regionally, extending the Nordic cooperation to Estonia and the Baltics is central. Steps need to be taken locally, and with the regional perspective we can work together for both local and global climate action. Ville Niinistö Finnish Minister of the Environment Climate change does not follow national borders. Therefore regional co-operation is vital for bringing about effective mitigation and adaptation measures.
