June 2019 Inmate Intake and Release Report 7/1/2019 12:02:02AM Sheriff's Record of Prisoner Intake and Release June 2019 Pursuant to Title §36-22-8 of the Code of Alabama: Sheriff to maintain record book as to prisoners received into county jail; contents thereof. The first words out of his mouth (before hello) was, “when is that damned book coming out?” Yes, it was due out in September… but NO, we’re pushing for mid to end of October. You remember the Ed-i-torial on this last month (if you don’t – go to the LAMP archive and read…. it’s important!!) We covered the various ways artists were used; the initial studio art departments; the ad-agency process for creating posters; design vs. finished posters; studios removing signatures; logo and title art; and comps and unused art. Right after that, I announced that to help show problem areas, we were creating a Title Index!! What a GREAT idea! Well – I compiled and re-sorted the current two thousand nine hundred and forty one titles in the book. And after glancing over it, my first thought was “WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING!!” This has to be the stupidest idea EVER just before going to press! I thought I would find a few duplicates and be able to quickly resolve them. THERE WERE DOZENS AND DOZENS OF THEM!! We now are over 100 artists or their families that we are in direct contact with. So, I started going through them and emailing various artists to figure out whose was whose and sorting out the two thousand four hundred and thirty poster images to go with the titles. Now we’re getting, “oh, yes, I forgot to give you this one,” and every other change you can think of.

Thanks to the impetus that Star Wars gave the film Tindustry in the late-1970s, effects budgets grew and grew, but because CGI was a mere twinkle in John Lasseter’s eye, the creatures and magic we witnessed were often handmade. They looked tactile, and films like The Dark Crystal and Time Bandits felt lived in and quirky, more like real life than a cold computer screen. These were the days before Photoshop too, and the posters that enticed us into the cinemas were largely hand-painted. A whole crop of genius fantasy artists caught our imaginations with pencils, ink and paint, with three-sheet or quad-sized posters going up around town whenever a new fantasy picture was on its way. More than that, our nostalgia is tweaked on a deeper, more psychological level. Fantasy films back then weren’t just a distraction from boredom. Generation Y and hipster haircuts hadn’t been invented. Back then kids were worried. Reaganomics and Thatcherism were ravaging economies. People began to die of AIDS. Famines killed millions in Africa. And the Cold War ThE Direct MethoD like John Alvin, Richard Amsel, Ted promised mutually assured Armageddon.
