Year 3 Newsletter Summer term 1, 2019

Dear parents,

Welcome back after the Easter break. Myself, Miss Hardiment and Mrs Lynam all hope you have had some well- earned time off with your children and families, whatever you did or wherever you went over the holidays.

Curriculum overview

Our main topic this half term is the Anglo Saxons. This will feed into many areas of the Y3 curriculum for the next 6 weeks. In English, we will write problem-resolution stories, initially by looking at the legend of Arthur and Excalibur, as part of the Talk for Writing programme. Later in the half term, we will create persuasion texts. In Maths, we will finish off our Length module, before moving on to Fractions and Time. We will also continue to practice our times tables, with a special focus on 3x, 4x, 8x, 50x and 100x.

Science will see us investigate light – looking at the difference between light and dark, how shadows are created and how reflections work. In History, we will look at the Anglo Saxons and the Scots, beginning with their presence in Britain after the fall of the Roman Empire and moving on to their culture, villages, weapons and language. In a joint Art-DT topic, Y3 will research, design and build their own Anglo Saxon shields. In French, we will look at greetings and numbers to 20. This half term, Mrs Baker will be delivering PSHE (Relationships) and RE (Sikhism) on Tuesday afternoons. Forest School for Year 3 will conclude in Summer term 2.

PE this term covers Cricket and will take place outside, where possible, on Wednesday afternoons. Please send your child in each Monday with their full PE kits (including trainers), along with a suitable sweatshirt to be worn outside in case of inclement weather. This also allows children to change into their PE kit in case their school clothes become unwearable due to mud/unforeseen circumstances.

Home learning

New spellings will be set each Monday, and the children will be tested on them the following Monday. Please encourage your child to practise these as often as possible, using the list of activities I issued before Christmas (please let me know if you need another copy). We will be testing the children on their times tables (3x, 4x and 8x) once a week – please practice these with your child as often as you can. You will also find attached to this letter a list of Key Instant Recall Facts for this half term which, to support your child’s learning in mathematics, they should aim to practise and learn on a regular basis. The focus of these facts is telling the time.

Please continue to be involved with your child’s reading as much as possible, by listening to them read and making comments in their record about the quality of their reading / their ability to answer questions about what they have read. Any reading done at the weekend should be written in the ‘Friday’ box. When they bring the book back to school, a member of staff will check and stamp the record to say that your child has been listened to in school, moved up a stage in reading, changed books or simply had their record checked.

Individual projects

Individual projects are a great way for children to demonstrate their understanding of a particular topic in their own way. Some suggestions for individual projects for this half term are as follows:

 Build a model of an Anglo Saxon village;

 Design and build an Anglo Saxon shield;  Create a model/picture that explains how light, shadows or reflections work, labelled with key vocabulary;  Create a factfile about the Seven Kingdoms, or about place name suffixes such as –ham, -stow, -wich, -ford, -mere or –worth and what they mean;  Any other projects which your child may come up with, which fit into our topics (please ask them to consult with me if they are unsure about their idea).

Your child should bring in their completed individual project in the final week of term (beginning 20th May), to be shown, shared and discussed with the rest of the class throughout that week.

‘Anything else?’

Year 3 will be having a ‘You Are Invited’ session on the afternoon of Thursday 23rd May at 2.30pm, where parents can come in to school to share in their child’s work. This will be at the end of our Anglo Saxons topic and will allow the children to showcase their artwork and Design Technology skills. Please look out for your formal invitations which will be sent home in the next few weeks!

Some Y3 children will continue to have weekly swimming sessions at Leisure Centre on Wednesday mornings. These parents will be notified in due course. Please ensure your child comes in each week with their swimming costume, swimming hat and a towel.

Please refer to the Y3 webpage at http://www.oldbuckenham-pri.norfolk.sch.uk/wp/children/tarantula-class for more information. If you have any questions or comments about anything in this letter, please do not hesitate to come and see me either before 8.30am or after school.

Yours sincerely,

Mr C Brown Y3 class teacher April 2019
